So John Hopkins Newsletter presented data saying that the deaths of Covid were not as excessive as we are being led to believe.

They then retracted the article, because people were using the data inaccurately.

But they have now put the data back up in a PDF.

And then go on to say this doctor isn't a medical doctor.

Why publish it in the first place?

I imagine until any study is peer reviewed and the results independently duplicated there is a risk it is inaccurate.

They probably normally publish almost anything submitted.

But in this case they got yelled at by one side so they retracted it, then got yelled at by the other side so they put it back.

Also scientific journals are for profit businesses.

Anyone can pay an average of $3500 to be published. No one really cares if what is published is accurate, only that the check clears.

1. John's Hopkins Newsletter is a student publication not a university publication. I believe that answers the question of why publish it in the first place. Because student publications will publish anything. But when a student publication pulls something because it's suspect now THAT is news.

2. The person that wrote it is an economist with no expertise related to infectious diseases and really no expertise in anything related.

3. She and Dr. Okun from Independence day.

The inaccurate article was published in a student newspaper at Johns Hopkins University. It was an opinion piece, not a scientific study, and had nothing to do with Johns Hopkins Medical school.

In this case, the opinion was deemed to be farfetched and the article retracted.

While maybe not the most accurate article there is still the solid point the media is not discussing is that we really haven't had excess deaths in comparison to other years. Each year for the last 7-8 years at least there has been a small increase in overall deaths from the previous year and this year is the same small increase nothing crazy over the top more. So while maybe some more deaths are being tied to covid it is expected that x amount of people will die over the year, the cause is what fluctuates more from year to year.

Not to be flippant, but what is the argument here? That we should just let people die horrific deaths from a disease because some number of people were going to die anyway?
It's like a global warming argument. The earth's temperature is going to increase anyway, so who cares if we trash it?

More so pointing out that back in april/may the news was all about how we were going to have all these excess deaths and that hasn't proven true. And really most deaths aren't pleasant but its a fact of life. And really there are far worst ways to die, there are many that suffer from diseases for months/ years with unrelenting pain.

Have you ever had a paper published in one?
I have not paid the required fee to publish anything or most importantly worked in an industry that requires I publish for my career to progress. However, I have spent the night at a Holiday Inn.

There have been many scandals related to publish or perish in academia. The need to publish huge numbers of papers results in a huge number of nearly worthless papers published. Many people have been caught reviewing and citing their own papers under secondary, tertiary, quaternary, and more accounts.

As a result of entrepreneurs and publish or perish there have been thousands of predatory journals that have sprung into existence with much lower fees and similar sounding names to well established journals that are happy to publish anything and help get it cited in other papers.

China has even taken the stance to downgrade the importance of the science citation index taking the first step to hopefully fixing the pitfalls of a well intentioned policy that rewards based on the number of papers published.

What? No. That's not true. Peer-reviewed journals are just that - peer reviewed. Your article is sent to the other experts in your field to be checked for accuracy, and for most peer-reviewed publications the majority of papers are rejected. There's no large fee, although you do pay a small page charge and can pay for re-prints if you want.

You are talking about predatory journals. Are you a scientist?? If so, you should not publish in predatory journals - they don't add to the body of knowledge of your discipline and they don't really count for your CV or for tenure or promotion, if you're in academia. Nobody takes them seriously.

Point one and point two of their comment was fine, but it's like it couldn't be helped adding what they think is a great quip. I've seen it a lot in their comments sometimes it's fine other times definitely not. It just reminds me of that friend or relative we probably all have. Still if wit is to be treated like an artform then you've got to know when to not do it...
