Maybe they can try cutting back the hours more and more, and charging more and more to visit the park, until it's open for just 3 hours per year and the only guest is Middle Eastern prince who paid $500 million.

That is the logical conclusion to saying "we are moving toward selling high priced luxuries to an exclusive clientele".

Same way the Russians sell space flights.

So if "check in" was 7...$149/5 hours is $30 per hour

9 to 9 is $135/12 hours $11.25 an hour.

Two things:
1. You'll have to explain the appeal...I still don't see it not as a ripoff
2. I had Chicago math...so I'm not too good with numbers.

There is no legitimate defense for this. There are "defenses"...but I can hear the same ones as always rattling around in my head and they aren't legitimate...

Ps...I actually thought you could get in at 4...and it still is egregious if it were That.

Allow me to ramble rant stream of thought. I want to see quality go up as prices go up. So for each price increase:
  • The line waits should be less.
  • The parks should get cleaner and cleaner.
  • The cast members get more hours and pay increases.
  • There should be shorter lines to get food and more seating.
  • There should be short waits and few stops for Magical Express as the resort rates increase.
  • There should be a bundle rate at a discount that includes all of the add-ons(extra magic, party at night, party over here ,party over there) so that the vacation can feel more all-inclusive.
  • Fast Pass needs to take less thought. Like how Universal does it.

Be careful, you don't want to be too logical. What are you trying to do make Iger look stupid?

My point is they are selling "after hours magic"...which is a sales pitch for AFTER HOURS.

Even though you can get in at 4...that isn't what they are selling and the majority of consumers will never know...

And why? Because they can't. Because people may make the LOGICAL choice and not pay for the day ticket and just go in at 4...which is bad for Joe rohde, the management In Bristol, Ct, the owner of Bob Igers tanning parlor, and the Chinese central bank.
The hard ticket people know they can get in early. The same way that party guests know they get in before the "party" Disney doesn't hide that.

I don't understand why it would be "bad" for the list that you gave.

When has Disney not charged more for high prices luxuries? There are a million extra charge options available to people.. Fireworks cruises..dessert parties..pirate cruise.. Etc etc etc

I have never once in my life stayed at a Disney park for 12 hours straight.

Because that list - along with phoney credit in Brazil and more bubble economics in the US...is quite frankly causing a lot of theses excessive pricing issues and changing the place forever...not in a good way.

The biggest friend to Disney diehards right now? Honestly? The board of directors at Comcast.

That's not true. A large part of the Park revenue comes from ancillary sales from people who are in the park as opposed to just ticket sales. Staying open longer does result in more revenue.

How well that trades against the additional costs we can't say.

And management can't figure that out?

And management can't figure that out?

Nope...they have ruined the potential product sales due to over saturation and streamlining and also shot themselves in the foot with dining.

I'm sure somebody who's been fired thought all of that "made sense" at one point.

I genuinely can see the appeal of an "empty" park. I hate people, I'd pay extra to avoid people.

But, I have two major problems with what Disney are doing here. One with what they've already done and the other with what they will inevitably do:

  1. They created the crowding problem by letting more and more people into the parks without increasing the number of attractions to compensate, now they're saying "hey that problem you have? For an extra 30% we'll fix it for you!"
  2. Their track record is clear on this. If they can sell this for $149, they'll increase the number of tickets until it ends up being just as crowded as everything else. It's what they do.
So far, from reports it sounds like it may not have sold nearly enough mind you.

I think it's more crowd control while gaining revenue oriented. But that's just my thought. I don't go to WDW in the summer bc of crowd levels. I would consider it when we are already going to FL anyway and had this option in place of a 2nd full MK day.

Trust me, I've been ranting for 2 days now about DCL's obscene price increase. I've been waiting months for pricing to come out for the Nowegian Fjord/Iceland 11 night cruise..and have been conversing daily with my TA. Pricing came out- $13k in a standard balcony room for me and a 6 year old. INSANE. I won't pay it so I'm going with a different cruise line for similar itinerary. IF DCL offers a discounted price later on then maybe I'll switch back to them.

So I am definitely blind to "all things Disney" and think everything they do is wonderful.

But in the case of the $149- it's purely optional. Do it or Not. It won't effect your vacation either way.

That s/b hear hear. Had that pointed out to me by a Brit when I made the same mistake.

We do but don't speak the same language. We say ' I hear you'.

Took me awhile, at first I couldn't figure out why anyone would walk around with a torch (flashlight) in their pocket.

Neither have eye...but EVERY single time I have purchase a ticket I was priced on the full day "potential" Value of the ticket.

Well you know me and never doing 12 hours with the lemming pounders, rarely 4 hours but that is because of FP+.

However I have yet to own a ticket with a "potential value" of 4 times on BTMRR without getting off (app 15 minutes of time), then Space Mountain by myself, then 7DMT as a walk on as many times as I want and on and on.

I really have no horse in this race, but usually when I see something new like this, I like to consider.

1. Who is benefiting from this change? (the answer is usually "rich people", lol)
2. Is that person me?
3. Can I change my vacation plans so I can benefit from this change?

I can say without a doubt this particular change does not benefit me. Lugging a 4 y/o and 2 y/o around MK at 1 AM is not my cup of tea.

That being said, there are always "defenses" as you say, as you can always find someone who would find value in something like this. Whether they are legitimate and ethical, or whether enough people will find value, I leave that for others to decide.

Assumptions:
1. 1 day MK regular ticket = $110, After Hours Party ticket = $149, 1 day Epcot ticket = $102, 2 day (non-park hopper) pass = $202
2. hotel room $200 per night
3. 2 adults in my party
4. I want to see both MK and Epcot
5. I have the energy to roll through the parks for 17 hours straight

Option 1
- Buy Epcot Ticket, go during the day = $102 x 2 = $204
- buy After Hours Party ticket, leave Epcot at 6 PM and get to MK at 7 PM = $149 x 2 = $298
- hotel room x 1 night = $200
Total = $702

Option 2
- Buy 2 day non-park hopper pass = $202 x 2 = $404
- go to Epcot on day 1 then MK day 2
- hotel room x 2 nights = $400
Total = $800

In this particular case, there is a potential for someone to benefit, depending on your travel habits. This doesn't take into account other non-financial factors of course, but I think would be some positives and negatives on both sides.

. You could do that quite frequently ...until about 5 years ago.

But for those level of crowds...they had attractions to support it.

Now they do not with the same lineup.

It buzzed the tower again, didn't it?

That's corrected and duly noted ;)
