WWYD? Injured while at Disney?

In the Op's defense. I do not think she is trying to blame disney. She is a little concerned over the lack of CM response.

I think somehow the CM's are "Trained" to not repsond as it may suggest fault and Disney could be sued. I'm sure they get sued all the time so they need to "CYA" so to speak

CM's not trained in providing medical assistance did not provide medical assistance. I'm not sure I would have expected them to. The most you should expect from a CM is for them to point you toward the first aid section of the gift shop or to offer to call an ambulance if you want one.

DH felt very ill after riding Priveival Whirl, Dinosaur and Expedition Everest twice in a row. I guess he can't handle a lot of motion in a short span of time.
After we exited EE, he got very pale and said he did not feel well. He proceeded to throw up in the bushes (there was nowhere else to go). I was very worried about him however, because he is in his forties and it was very hot out that day. I got him a spot in the shade to sit down and ran to get a CM. She came over and I asked if they could get him some water. I didn't not want him to get dehydrated from the heat and the vomitting. She came back about 5 minutes later saying they are not allowed to give him water because he was vommiting and he might choke on it.
I said yes, but he could also become dehydrated from the vomitting or have heat stroke. I asked her to please sit with him(she even seemed reluctant to so that)and I literally ran to the nearest water station and bought a $4.00 bottle of water and didn't wait for my change. After sitting in the shade and drinking the water DH was better. The CM said the only thing she could do was get him an ambulance if he wanted one. I really thought this was not handled well. He just needed shade and water and the fact that they would not even provide him a free cup of water while I sat with him really disappointed me.

It pretty must ruined our day. We spent the rest of the afternoon in our room in the air conditioning. DH insisted he was okay but I was freaked out by the whole incident. I didn't go back to the parks that day because I really felt vulernable.

Again, you're surprised that a CM with no medical training did not give medical assistance? I'm not. There is no way that someone with absolutely zero medical training can ascertain whether or not someone exhibiting the symptoms your DH was can be given water or not. If they had gotten the water for you to give to your DH and it ended up being a BAD thing to do, guess who would have lost their job and guess who would have gotten sued.

So you were there when my son fell into the WL fountain? What a bizarre small world we live in.

No, we did not request "medical help". That was not our intention, and if it had been, the complete lack of response to our request for a towel would probably have discouraged it anyway. The desk CMs refused to look up at meet my husband's eyes and just shook their heads No.

We weren't angry, blaming, causing a scene, etc . But the very pointed responsed (or lack thereof) by ALL the CMs present was shocking. I mean, a toddler falls down on his head into a fountain where there is running water, rocks (although they are fake and the water was not a real hot spring) and is laying facedown without moving until his mother jumps down into there also and no one even looks our way? :confused3
Seems cold and callous then....still seems cold and callous now after 11 years.

If you needed emergency assistance, all you had to do was ask the CMs to call for an ambulance. There is really nothing else they can do in this situation. Giving any assistance (even a towel) could be interpreted as medical assistance. What if the towel was not clean and applied to the wound and caused an infection - LAWSUIT! Or at least they have to assume it could lead to one.

I am sending best wishes for fast healing.

I am recovering from an achilles tendon injury - take a long-long time.

Add my name to the "go to the doctor" list...that is what is most important.

For anyone hurt at a Disney Resort....my advice is to head up to Guest Services. In August of 2004 - while vacationing at the Grand Cali with a friend of mine, I finally realized I was horribly sick (pancreatitus - 2 weeks in the hospital!!).

At 3 am when I decided the pain outweighed my horrible health insurance, we headed to the lobby for help. They were WONDERFUL. They offered to find an on-call physician at 3 am, drive us to Celebration Health, arrange for my parmacy to be delivered, and left a wheelchair in our room in case I needed it. My friend had a car so he was the duty driver and off we went for the bad news.

They called the room more than once to check to see if we needed anything.

It was a terribly frightening time for me - but staff were all very helpful.

My advice for anyone who is injured at a Disney Resort.....go right up to guest services....they will make sure you are taken care of.

I'm so glad to hear how well you were treated. This is exactly what I would imagine those wonderful CMs doing. This thread is making me super-sad, though. :sad1:

OP, you should write to Disney and get this off your chest. I would seriously have a bad taste in my mouth if I was treated this way, and you deserve someone to hear you out about it. CMs are usually so great when things go wrong, and at a time like yours is when you really NEED that smiling, helpful face. Not this...:rolleyes1 I'm sure Disney does train their CMs not to put themselves into a liability situation, but obviously some of them need a "refresher course" on the difference between assuming responsibility for an accident and just showing some common courtesy and compassion!!! It may do no good to let them know, but you'll probably feel better. Oh, and get to a doc about your foot.

You do see that Mouseaholic did not receive medical care from CMs. The CMs facilitated the medical care. They called for a physician. They made arrangements with the pharmacy. They left a wheelchair for them to use if they wanted. None of this is actual medical care. This is more like operating like a broker for medical care.

OMG Im so sorry to hear what happend. That totally sucks. Especially the CMs they are supposed to have everything in hand right then and there (espcially the med supplies). At least the couple who saw you fall helped you out. That was so nice of them. Well I hope you get better. xoxoxox

It takes longer for a sprain to heal than a break. Go to the doctor and find out what's wrong with it. It's not Disney's fault you tripped on the sidewalk. And as for the rudeness of the CM's, they are just people like you and me and aren't always in an upbeat happy mood.

The CMs weren't rude. They were only doing the only thing they could do in this litigious society we live in.

OP... just to give you my experience with ankle/foot injuries...

I fell last summer, very badly spraining BOTH ankles (one had previously been broken in my teens). The ER missed a small fracture, and 4 weeks later I was at the Sports Medicine doc getting new Xrays that revealed it. At that point, there was nothing to do but physical therapy, continued ice therapy and common sense.

What I have learned... the ankles on most of us are poor, weak things. We injure them all the time, and they'll hurt a day or two and we never think of it, until we twist it heartily, and the pain doesn't go away. You can certainly see a doctor - you'll need to see an orthropod or sports specialist, since they handle joint function... your regular doctor really can't help, even if you could get in. The benefit of getting a small amount of physical therapy is it will teach you what you need to do to restrengthen the joint, and get to a less painful place.

I only went to PT for about 4 weeks, and then did things on my own, based on what I'd learned. It's been just over a YEAR, and I STILL have pain (not to scare you, because my sprains were very severe), and I still do my own PT, sometimes ice and I am super careful about my footwear. I ONLY wear shoes that sit securely on my feet, and aren't sloppy at all and are quite flat.

It's the funniest little things like that that can take an amazingly long time to heal and to feel like they used to - but you CAN get there.

OH - I also got myself a trigger wheel.... I had knots upon knots upon knots in my feet and ankles, and the trigger wheel was a great way to work them all out.

Good luck!! I certainly hope you feel better!! Protect those ankles!!!

Everyone here is advocating on going to your dr and I agree. As for the CMs ignoring you and looking away you can write or call Disney. I do not know what they have been trained to do or not to do in those situations. When we were on our trip last week while exiting DHS a woman tripped (she was wearing Crocs) and landed partially on her stomach, hands, and the side of her face. She lay there crying. She did have family there with her trying to help. A CM by the exit just stood doing nothing but watching.

i feel your pain. i sprained my ankle 7 years ago. dr. said i should have broken it, it was that bad. i didn't break it and there's no fractures or anything. but still to this day, it hurts. i did physical therapy and it was better for awhile. then the pain came back.

come to find out i had nerve damage. a $600 test to tell me this. all from that sprain.

you definitely need to go to the dr. have x-rays, mri's and whatever else you can get. i'm on neurotin now for the constant annoying pain that the stupid sprain.

oh, for heaven sakes!! They do not have to have medical training to give someone an ice pack or a cold cloth to clean themselves up after a fall and access the damage. Getting off their duff (or moving their feet) to get something for the injured person is not accepting blame for the accident; it is simply getting something a guest asked for.

Besides if there is not one person in all of the Poly trained in first aid; Disney is seriously setting themselves up for a major lawsuit (and I know that Disney is much, much smarter than that). I can assure you that there is someone there trained and either of those CM's should have gone and gotten the person. Is there not some kids clubs at the poly and maybe some kids activities led by CM's? I would bet my bottom dollar that the CM's in the kid's clubs are trained in first aid and could be asked to assist a guest.

Trained in it, probably, allowed to use that knowledge in anything less than a life threatening situation, probably not. I am a preschool teacher(11 years now), I have taken first aid and CPR classes every year, but, if one of my kiddos scrapes their knee, I am only allowed to rinse it with water and apply a band aide, no soap, no antibacterial ointment, no first aide cream. In a true emergency the rules are different, but for minor scrapes and bruises this is all that is allowed(and my guess is that that is more than would be allowed if it was an adult), I would imagine the rules for Disney staff are similar.
