Welcome aboard @darrenf67

Thanks so much for the compliment about the writing and photos. I'm really glad you are enjoying it.

I bet you are getting excited for your trip which isn't far now. We were actually in WDW on Halloween night 2013. It is an amazing experience. If you have a look in my signature below you will see my trip report from there and I have a lot of posts, photos and video from Halloween if you are interested. Or here is the link for it.

http://www.disboards.com/threads/my-very-belated-trip-report-la-uso-ioa-wdw.3344673/

Halloween starts on page 2 I think.

We have just booked another trip for next USA summer at this stage it doesn't contain any Disney elements but that may change! Feel free to ask any other questions you might like and I hope you enjoy the rest of the report.

New Years Eve - Day

The next day we had planned to keep it a bit low key as it was New Years Eve, so we were planning to have an easy day before we had to our Time Square venue for out NYE event. I’ll talk more about that later.

For the day we made our way back to Central Park as we wanted to walk around it a bit more. It was pretty hard to fathom how big the park was and there were so many people around walking, riding bikes just enjoying the open space. With lots of the tree bare of their leaves, it was a quite different view of vegetation and trees than we are used to in the warmer Brisbane climate.

Walking along the sidewalk to the park, there were live Christmas trees that had been thrown out for recycling/Certainly something we had never seen before.

A little bit of backstory on the image: I was blackmailing Mum and Dad to go to the Central Park Zoo by saying that the horse drawn carriages were right near it and they were actually near there. We were looking for the carriages and I said they're right near the zoo, even though there was one closer!! lol! We ended up going to the zoo the next day!

Hey again
All caught up - what a great trip so far. We did a Fantasy cruise in 2013 and that was one of the best weeks I've had on vacation - I have been looking at another for Christmas next year actually. Your photos have inspired me to make it happen now haha!
Washington is an amazing place make sure you get back there - the Lincoln memorial is my favourite.
New York is an awesome, vibrant city - I am heading back there in November - it has an energy I love.
What a great idea with the celebrant - if you don't mind me asking - what kind of cost was involved for that?
NYE in NYC - can't wait to see what happens next!!

Oh lffamDSon, I'm looking forward to hearing about your experience at Central Park Zoo because I'm considering about whether to include that on our itinerary :)

NYE Event

After deciding where we were going to be for Christmas, then naturally the next question was where for NYE. NYC seemed to be a major bucket item that we could tick off. We researched many different options for NYE. We quickly ruled out standing out in Times Square along with 1 million other people in the cold for 8 hours plus. We looked at some river cruises, but read some hit and miss reviews. We then thought being somewhere inside, seated warm but being able to go outside near midnight would be the best option for us. Then we had to consider did we want to be somewhere which had a view of the “Ball Drop”. While we thought that may be nice, it wasn’t an essential part, we really just wanted to be near and among the festivities.

We looked reviews and I email a number of places. Bubba Gumps, Rosie O’Gradys and some others. Bubba Gumps was only for guest 21+ so that ruled them out. Rosie O’Gradys, when we got the email had already sold out of private tables and you could only book communal tables. The one we ended up choosing was the Brooklyn Diner. This was a good for acouple of reasons. Now the prices for NYE are astronomical. Bubba Gumps from memory was around $700 per head. This did include 5 courses and a premium bar. We are not massive drinkers so an open bar wasn’t really a draw card for us. Also the price at every place was the same for Adults and kids. Brooklyn Diner included some drinks but not an open bar so the cost was less. It was $350 per head. While this sounds a lot, trust me there was not much, that got half decent reviews, much less than this. If you are going to do a NYE even in Time square, then expect to pay for it, that is my word of warning.

Arranging to buy tickets for the event was really easy. We had registered with a number of venues. When it was time we got emails. When we had decided on Brooklyn Diner, we communicated with the Manager of the Diner via email. We had to send copies of a credit card form and copies of our credit card and then we got confirmation. Nothing was charged on to our credit card until the night and we even had up until 26 December to cancel with no cost. About a month out we got an email saying that tickets were being prepared we could pick them up from the venue from the 29th December. We went to the venue the day before and got our tickets and we met Rich the manager who also gave us our “pass” to let us through the police blockages into the Time Square district, which is shut down in the afternoon.

The event started at 8pm. We left the hotel around 7pm and got a taxi to outside the blocked out area and then made our way towards the checkpoint. This was not an easy task for us. We went the way were directed and got turned back. We had to double all the way back to basically where we started and come back another way. We eventually got to a security checkpoint where the police used metal detectors on everyone and were not letting any backpacks or larger bags through. I had our camera bag so I wasn’t sure if we were going to get through. It took a while for us to get to the front but when we did we got scanned and he checked the camera bag and let us through no problem. The police presence was out of this world, something I’ve never seen. We were actually glad to see so much security, made us feel much safer.

One we were through the security check point we walked up to the next cross street. Here we showed the police officers our tickets and our pass and he said we couldn’t get through here, we had to go back to anther street and then around a different way. He then called over another officer, who I think was his superior. We explained where we were going showed him our pass, told them we were from Australia and we didn’t know the area. Not sure if he felt sorry for us or just wanted to get rid of us, but he moved a barricade and let us through with the other officer and the officer to walk us up to the next block show the next officer there the passes and tell them to escort you through to 43rd. The younger officer complied and we were walking up with him. When we got to the next checkpoint, the younger officer said I’ll just take you all the way through, so he escorted us right the way to 43rd and 6th which was where we had to go.

I must say getting us to the security checkpoint was pretty stressful. There was a time where we thought maybe we wouldn’t be able to get through. We did have Rich, the Diner managers, mobile number and he had said for us to call if we had any issues. We were almost about to, but thankfully we go our self through with some luck & goodwill from the NYPD! As we approached the final access point, there were these men in front of us who had “Access All Areas” passes they showed them to the Police and the police told them they were fake and they couldn’t go past. We stepped back a little as it looked like it may get a little out of hand when they started to argue. When it was clear the police we not backing down, the gentlemen simmered down and turned around and left. We showed our tickets and pass and he said you can’t get through here, and we just felt deflated. He called out to his college saying, “where do the go through for the Brooklyn Diner” and the other officer said something like, “here, it’s right behind us”, and then he let us through. So close the and hour and half later, we were there. We walked about 75 metres after the final access point and were soon inside with the festivities and enjoying some appetisers and drinks and reviling in a NYC NYE!

Brooklyn Diner Time Square - New Years Eve

We were not short of food or drinks the whole night. The atmosphere was really great. The staff were all great. We were able to go outside of the restaurant which had a reserved area in front of it for its guests and then we could retreat back into the warmth for some more food & drinks. It was a great set up which suited us well.

At about 11:40 we made our way outside into the cold but cordoned off area in front of the restaurant to watch the festivities. We got talking to a few a people around all saying similar things about the night how enjoyable it had been and how convenient it was to be warm, fed and then have access to this area at the prime time.

@darrenf67 The cruise was a great experience for us, our first and likely not our last. We were spoiled with the upgrade which really added icing, cherries and lots of sprinkles on top !! I was really surprise how "not crowded" it seemed. Castaway Cay was crowded as you can probably tell from the pictures, but other than that onboard we were pleasantly surprised.

I am really looking forward to go back to Washington and see all the things I didn't see the first time and the Lincoln Memorial is definitely on that list. @Aussie Wendy also highlighted another I want to go to at that the National Archives. DW want to go to Arlington Cemetery also which I think will be quite moving.

NYC we really just scratched the surface, hence why we want to go back so soon DW was a big fan of it also. While I know DS will be interested in a ll we do we are trying to find some more teen oriented experiences also to help feed his travel desires also. The celebrant was $350. This included many email back and forward with ideas and refinements and he prepared everything we didn't have to do anything. other than tell him about ourselves, what we liked, what we wanted out of the ceremony. He was great. He also helped with some NYC touring/sight seeing tips so it was money well spent in our books.

Wow, your updates are fantastic! NYC looks amazing but I would have been super stressed negotiating those check points that's for sure! We are getting married (for the first time, not renewal!) in Vegas in December - with Elvis too! :-) Can't wait!

Wow what a drama you had to get into the Diner. I'd have found that quite traumatic! But it looks like it was worth it and was a really fun place to be for New Years Eve in NYC. Plus it will be an experience you will never forget :)

Our original rough plan has us in NYC over New Years but then I saw how the hotel rates spike so much and also I realised that a) if we were there on NYE, there was no way I'd be waiting out in the cold for 8 hours and b) although it is for a lot of other people, being in NYC for New Years has never actually been on my bucket list. So I re-jigged our itinerary and we will be in Washington DC. We'll arrive into NYC on 01 January presumably when they are cleaning up all the mess from the night before!

Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed the updates!

Trust me I was getting stressed! When we got to the security checkpoint and they were turning away small backpacks I really thought we would not be allowed through, but thankfully that was not the case.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! With ours the chapel live streamed it so family and friends back home could watch also . It was a great experience, I think I said earlier I wasn't entirely convinced with it before hand but am so glad we did it.

Ok here is my summation on NYE in NYC. We’ve done it now, we likely won’t ever want to do it again. While I have said it was a bucket list item, it really only became one when we started thinking about it going to NYC and then the through of being there for NYE. With hindsight I would say personally, it was an experience I enjoyed but could have easily passed it over for something else. I would never have had that view if I hadn’t actually done it so it’s a bit paradoxical I know. The effort to get to the venue was extremely stressful, something I am happy to live without especially on holidays. While it all turned out well for us and it’s an experience for us to look back on and adds to our family journey and share with others, I wouldn’t be rushing to do it again. The count down and ball drop was, well to be honest most Australian NYE that I’ve seen have been better. Time Square electronic billboards became a Commercial New Year’s Eve advertising. Which really isn’t anything different to time square on a regular day. The fireworks were nowhere near as spectacular as Sydney or even Brisbane. If we did happen to be in NYC and NYE I would go to a more local restaurant and maybe down to Central Park. Add to all that, the one single night cost a fortune!!

Central Park Zoo

We all slept in the next day and had lunch locally close to the hotel. After lunch we decided to go to eh Central Park Zoo. We bought our tickets online and we had to print them using the computer and printer in the lobby of the hotel. We caught a taxi to the Zoo. We were on our way when I realised I hadn’t printed the tickets, so we had to go back. Taxi driver wasn’t to happy, don’t know why he was going to get more money from us. We arrived back at the hotel and I asked him to wait while I ran inside and printed off the tickets, which took only a few minutes and then we were on our way. We had caught a few cabs so far, always paid with card, never had a problem and the drivers had been perfectly fine. When I went to pay with card he asked if I have any cash and I told him I wanted to pay by card. He questioned me saying you don’t have any cash to pay? I just said no and he wasn’t impressed again. I paid with my card we got out and he took off cursing me. I will say that was the exception not the norm from our experience.

We made it to the zoo, it was really cold. It was -1C but the “feels like” was -10C we were really feeling it. It isn’t a huge zoo by any stretch, we went around to all the animals in probably less than an hour. Here are some of the photos.

The penguins exhibit at Melbourne Aquarium is far better in my view.
