That is an incorrect statement. While there is new speculation that Covid 19 did not originate there, it certainly has not been disproved that other viruses have originated in the wet markets.

I don't think it is an "editorial of wild speculation". Google Wuhan lab safety it is a story that is being carried by many news outlets.

This particular article jumps from reports citing safety issues at the lab from over 2 years ago, to a general saying "probably not but maybe" to speculation from a member of UK council saying "maybe," to referencing foreign affairs specialist's opinion, and ends with yet another general's opinion. Where are the facts? The only fact seems to be that there was a safety concern noted over 2 years ago. Everything else is opinion, and you know what they say about them.

It should not be a surprise to anyone that zoonoses are a top research priority everywhere. Even if they obtained evidence that this virus came from a lab that used poor safety protocols leading to a worker's lab-acquired infection, that also doesn't mean bioweapon or purposeful release for some sort of research competition or whatever "they" are saying now.

I read that these are hard to shut down because there is also a traditional and spiritual element in them. They have been around for thousands of years and the practice of selling and eating exotic animals has traditions that go back forever. Apparently, certain exotic animals are believed to have healing powers for different ailments. Hard to break thousands of years of tradition.

Having large families was also a thousands-year-old tradition in China, but the government managed to stop that. They can stop wet markets if they choose to. The problem is getting them to choose to keep them shut down. It doesn't seem to be a high priority for them.

This is an area where the international community really needs to exert some pressure via sanctions, etc.

I think the Wuhan lab is definitely worth looking into as a source of all this just to ensure procedures are in place to be safer there going forward. Not conspiracy theories etc. It’s only a few miles from the wet market in question and seems like a more probable source since they were researching the Coronavirus virus from bats.

That has NOT been disproven. The earliest DIAGNOSED individual wasn't related directly to the market. But Covid has no symptoms in a large percentage of people. So there is no way of knowing who was the very first person to have it and spread it, who could very well have been asymptomatic (or mildly symptomatic) and not come to the attention of medical professionls.

The markets themselves aren't necessarily the problem. It's what they sell there. The majority of what they sell is not all that different than what we have in the rest of the world - meat from domesticated animals and seafood. But then there are the exotic/wild animals that are pointed to as the most likely source of Covid-19. They're going to need to get serious about that. It may be somewhat of a tradition, but not necessarily one that most people had.

The PRC is somewhat bipolar. When things are going well, they relax and most people don't think the government is going after them for breaking the rules. At least until something bad happens. One example is in building standards. They supposedly have standards, but when a building collapses and it's discovered that a building wasn't build to code, they bring harsh punishment - up to executing people. They're going to be vigilant for the time being, but who knows how long it's going to stay that way.
