Rogue One catch all thread

Though I'm tempering my expectation...because I saw rave reviews last year bout this time and they were fluffing some pillows...

The parts above are exactly...if true...the reasons this might be a real Star Wars movie that adds to the lore.

George lucas has run around for years saying "they're basically kids movies"

...BULL...that's what a guy that made bad commercialism prequels says to save face.

Star Wars sticks with you as a kid through adulthood...gen xers (now old)...appreciate mark hamill more now than ever.

I think a better quote of what Star Wars was and should be is this:

"Star Wars is a different kind of fairy tale for a generation growing up WITHOUT heroes...in a bigger, more complicated world"

I liked that guys take...
...it was george lucas, around 1990 when had decided that he would never be willing to pay to make more due to lack of technology.

He musta ran outta money or something afterwards...

Back in 77 most Star Wars critics labeled it as a kids fantasy and even more put it on par with Western version of Wizard of Oz which to me means its a kids movie that the family can enjoy.

"The excitement of those who call it the film of the year goes way past nostalgia to the feeling that now is the time to return to childhood.”

"It’s aimed at kids — the kid in everybody.”

"Star Wars will do very nicely for those lucky enough to be children or unlucky enough never to have grown up."

Uh-oh. I did not realize that this was going to be a "gritty" kind of movie, and we have tickets for opening night. My boys are fairly sheltered from blood and gore and cruel violence. Mostly I hope it doesn't have cruel violence (torture). I can hardly stand to watch it myself.

You can probably still refund them. I'd read the total reviews (coming out sometime later today) and decide...

I can't see it being that bad (any worse really than the rest of the Star Wars movies) but that's just me. You can read reviews of course but that might spoil the movie.

Rteetz, you have seen Band of Brothers, right? When EW puff pieces refer to the movie as Band of Brothers in Star Wars form, they don't mean this is gonna look like GI Joe cartoon violence on screen...

To be on the safe side we're going to cancel tix for younger two and me until DH has seen it. Still going to take DS13 - he wanted to see it for his birthday with two of his friends, and he'll be fine. A little sad I won't be going, but it's not like I won't EVER get to see it...

MommaBerd,
I didn't want to read entire reviews due to possible spoilers, but the reviewer taglines used on the main page state that the third act is heavily action-oriented. This may be where there would be cause for concern, but without knowing specific details I couldn't tell you how graphic or intense that part of the film might be.
It is Star Wars and rated PG-13, so I wouldn't think it's Saving Private Ryan intense.

Still, you probably are doing the smart thing and waiting for the older child and DH to fill you in on the details.

Other than Garth, who made the latest Godzilla, its made by people who worked on Saving Private Ryan, Blackhawk Down and Zero Dark 30.

The hope of Star Wars hard core fans is that Vader had an absolute hardcore Sith scene in this movie, as its played out in a recent book Battlefront.

And I think I read a tweet where he does:

@breznican: Last thought (for now): Vader gets a moment of pure horror. Maybe more than one, arguably. #RogueOne

I have not seen that movie. I am still not sold on the violence part but I'll let you know after I get out Thursday night for sure.

I get all that...I've been reading this for decades...

And while of course the kids are gonna love it...it has always reasonated more as I got older and watched them again...maybe it's just me...

And I'm a cynic and incredibly brutal of a critic.

My point being that lucas made bad crap and twisted for now 10 years on why he "meant to do it"

Not buying that.

The non-spoiler reviews are out....

Some (the New York media)...absolutely hated it...

Others (mainstream and genre reporters) absolutely loved it.

What I find interesting is that nearly all reporters loved TFA...and are now saying that this one lacks the "deep character development" of last year..

I'm beginning to think that this is Hollywood politics at work...what the hell did Abrams do that I'm missing?

Very interested for Thursday now...

See, that "I loved TFA and this is worse" is a huge red flag for how good this really isn't...no one wants to cross the mouse, since the mouse is where all the movie money has been the last few years, so you still give it a thumb's up in the most non-committal way...

I mean, Wash Post even says it (while giving it a thumb's up)
"Rogue One" represents an unobjectionable exercise in franchise extension. It's fine. It'll do. For now."

I find it interesting that there's a lot of skiddish on this...do you think disney really allowed saving private ryan to be filmed?

I'm genuinely curious on people's opinions.

I think people are hesitant because this isn't part of the trilogy, it is its own film in itself. It has new and standalone characters. There is some familiarity but its different. I am excited for Thursday.
