"I Heard They Shaved A Gorilla" - Reviews & Pix - COMPLETED Post # 155

Brenda,
I loved the Log commercials on Ren & Stimpy!! I once knew the words to the whole song, cause it got stuck in my head. I quite enjoyed R&S as well, til they ran out of new material....

I knew I liked you for a reason!!! Somehow I just had a feeling that you might be a Ren & Stimpy fan ... :rotfl2: I agree totally that they ran out of material fast, but those first two seasons were awesome. Their version of Robin Hood still makes me laugh when I think about it ... "Thou has be-squirted me!" :lmao:

My television tastes, and recollections of shows, have been questioned over the years, but I guess I like what I like.
I still enjoy the occassional rerun of Manimal, but have not been able to find playing anywhere the reruns of The Master (starring Lee Van Cleef and co-starring Salami from the White Shadow).
Great stuff!!

Jay and I love cartoons ... especially the ones that work on two levels; I think that's why we like SpongeBob so much. Sometimes I think we watch more cartoon TV than people who have kids! :lmao:

I'm not sure about Manimal ... it sounds familiar but I don't remember it.

Yikes! Sound like you were at CP with some serious ogres!:scared1:
We really enjoyed our dinner there last year, but I totally agree with you about the super confusing check in progress.:confused3 Our food was great, our server sweet and the characters were great. I hope we get humans instead of wild animals for our return in August. Jeesh! Just because the character are from the hundred acre wood, doesn't mean the people are supposed to act like wild animals!

The first season of R&S were ground breaking. Second one was okay, but sliding downward. Of course, they weren't old school. The classic, yet underappreciated, Tennessee Tuxedo, or maybe even Super Chicken, now those were cartoons.

Manimal was a short lived television series (7 episodes maybe), where the star could become any animal he wanted. (Think of it as Auqaman meets the Wonder Twins). If the guy needed to swim somwhere, he could become a dolphin. Needed to scare someone or knock something down, he could become a bear. Needed to sneak past an open doorway in the bad guys factory, the scene would be the star walking down the hall, then an animal transformation sequence, then you'd see a black panther creeping past the doorway, then cut away again, and the guy was walking down the hall some more. Terrible stuff. So bad, it was hysterical. The television badness equivalent to the movie "The People Under The Stairs".:lmao: :rotfl2:

The Master - starring Lee Van Cleef and Salami, had Lee fighting or sneaking around in ninja outfits, and Salami as his apprentice of sorts. Hilarity ensued, which was not good for an action/drama series. A real downer in the early 1980's, from the guy who was terrific opposite Clint Eastwood in more than one western of fame.:worship:

The Atlanta Depot scene reminder was great, but upon recollection, Crystal Palace seemed to me more resembling of the food poisoning scene at Martin Prince's birthday party. Kids strown about the place, many moaning over something or another, no relief to be found.. .. (which of course was a reference to the Atlanta Depot scene in GWTW).

Any word on when the reverse vampires, in conjunction with The Rand Corporation, will be needing the movie rights to my Epcot Beverage Adventures? I'm down to one more dining review, Raglan Road (with pictures people, with pictures), so my next projects are starting to queu. Aside from pickling some tomatoes for Mr. Disney, my slate is pretty clean so far for the Summer. (You can PM me about the Rand Corp., if you want).

:charac2: We can't even get wine here on Sundays!!! We lived in NC for a long time and I got used to it being in the grocery store. Not so here! Just know it could be worse.

Great review, though! We had an Asian dipping sauce that sounded like yours at Narcoossee's with fried oysters. It was out of this world.

You can't buy any kind of alcohol on Sundays in GA either (except what you order in restaurants). They considered changing the law where you could have at least bought beer and wine in grocery stores on sunday (like you can here the rest of the week) but it didn't pass. The legislature did compromise...you can "re-cork" what you order at restaurants and bring it home with you. So much better, haha. :rotfl2: Oh well.

Yes indeed. Harrah's Cherokee Casino. No booze, no cards (that means no poker, if you read between the lines). Video everything, including video blackjack. Maybe that's why I have to go to Foxwoods every time I am anywhere near Conn.....

The NC Cherokee casino stinks!

I know the place! I've lost money there! :rotfl:

Anyway, thanks for the great reviews! :thumbsup2 I love CP for breakfast, but it is quite the zoo. And I'm still drooling over that cheese plate from FF...although of course I've never met a cheese I didn't like...:rotfl:

Can't wait for more!

Your RANT perfectly described why DH, DD, and I don't eat at buffets anymore... at all.

Most people don't have the same.... ahem... standards ...as we do as it pertains to handwashing and cleanliness. :lmao: What is OK in your kitchen at home isn't necessarily ok in a public place or when handling utensils that other people are going to use... :crazy2:

sigh...

Makes you want to reach for the handiwipes, doesn't it... :rotfl2:

Anyway, great job reviewing CP... If I didn't have such an aversion to Buffets, I think I might eat there... I love Eeyore. Another one I want to try... but... ewwww... is Boma... It always looks good.

We're both the same way about buffets.......however I agree BOMA may be worth it.;)

Great job Rob.....can't wait for Raglan Road!!!!!:cool1:

Ogres, possibly. Trolls, definitely.

The food was quite good for a buffet, and the characters and server were great. We'll probably be back, but I don't know how soon.

Loved your 100 Acre Wood comment. I think what separates humans from wild animals is common sense, that and the ability to use cutlery.:rotfl2:
(And if anyone can tell me what movie the cutlery comment is from, I will buy you a Coke or Diet Coke of your choice, next time we are at WDW at the same time of year, and you are thirsty, and we can find a place to meet, etc......)

So, so true. :) That Dessert Guy, thank goodness, I ran into him late in the meal, or I may have lost my appetite for the day, if he had been the first person I saw near the buffet.

Still, at least he was tall enough not to be at 'sneeze or cough level' with the food. Some of the 'unattended children' were almost crawling onto the buffet, reaching for the platters holding the food. A typical buffet layout just isn't designed for small children to help themselves.

The legislature did compromise...you can "re-cork" what you order at restaurants and bring it home with you. So much better, haha. :rotfl2: Oh well. !

Yeah, that really helps doesn't it? Makes you wonder about the open container laws, though.

Robert, great review! Being a huge GWTW fan, I was cracking up at the reference. Our plans for CP are teetering on the edge and we may actually bow out and just find Piglet at Animal Kingdom. (Thank you, Disney, for raising those prices of MVMCP. The restructuring of the budget may have me eating frozen bananas all week.) The finger-licking-guy made me wish that buffets had out big tubs of Clorox wipes like Kroger's does, for wiping down the buggies.

Ah, dry Cherokee. We had training there once, pre-casino days, and had to drive to Bryson City, or somewhere for some refreshments. (In the state vehicle, no less. :thumbsup2 )

Ah yes, the wipes. :) We have those here at Harris Teeter, and the grocery cart gets a good wipe-down (especially the handle part) before we start shopping.

Once I finally got to experience Vegas, back in 2001, I haven't returned to Cherokee. No booze, no cards, chain smokers everywhere except the tiny tiny non-smoking gaming area (with limited games), and some of the worst payout percentages anywhere. No competition anywhere close by, so they try to fleece you (on the slots) as quickly as possible.

first i wanted to say I have been reading and have really enjoyed you posts.

I totally agree with you about the CP buffet. Our experience was much the same. Great buffet, character interaction, some of the people not so much.

When we were almost done with our meal a lady came in with her family and within about five min a character was over after the standard hugs and pictures the character left and went to another table. After the character had gotten about two to three tables over the mom realizes they forgot to get an autograph and tells the child to "walk over to the other table and get one". :scared1: I thought this was very rude. The child didn't even notice until the mom brought it up. totally unfair to the other table. We had great people around us who reminded their kids it was others turn and theirs would come up. * did you hear the bump when I stepped down off soapbox ?

We saw almost the same scenario when we were there. And we, too, had reminded our kids that the characters would eventually make their way around the room, and we would get to meet all of them, when it was our turn.

The funny thing is, in your example, that lady would have likely flipped out if another child had come to their table, interupted their character time, and tried to get an autograph. But since it was all about her vacation, and nobody else mattered, she dispatched her child to intrude on others. Sad.:sad2:

I didn't hear the bump from any stepping down off the soapbox, I heard the sound of common sense. Feel free to chime in anytime. ;)

As an aside did you ever happen to watch Ren & Stimpy in the good old early days of its production? They had a "toy" that they ran commericals for called Log and one of the accessory kits it came with was "Civil War Log" and it was wrapped in old bandages, came with rusty surgeon's tools, and screamed hideously. It was very funny ... in a sick and twisted sort of way. Seemed like the sort of thing you might get a chuckle out of. ;)

Because I think it's so dumb it's funny I'd like to share the Log song with you.

Ahem ...

Log rolls down stairs
alone or in pairs
rolls into the neighbors' dog
it's good for a snack
and fits on your back
it's Log, Log, Log!

It's Log .. it's Log...
it's big, it's heavy, it's wood!
it's Log... it's Log...
it's better than bad, it's good!

Everyone wants a Log!!

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

OK ... I'm leaving now. ;)
OMG! Thank you for that, I love the log song :rotfl2: OK back on topic.

These reviews were great. For someone who never gets to eat more then character meals and CS's it was a nice view of how the otherside lives it up in the World. Now I really can't wait to try Flying Fish someday.

UPDATE:
Please forgive the lateness of my reply.

I've got one review left to do, Raglan Road (with pictures). If all goes well, it should be posted by the end of the day Tuesday.

I haven't forgotten about it. Been very busy.

REVIEW: Raglan Road

SUMMARY: Its quiet…..too quiet…..

This was a new adventure for us at Raglan Road, a midweek (Friday) walk-up lunch (no ADR, and a lunch, who are these people??). We completed our early morning touring plan at the Animal Kingdom, and were leaving for the Florida coast that afternoon. After some discussion, dining at the RFC in AK was scrapped in favor of a visit to DTD and Raglan Road. We had earlier this week made an attempt to move our ADR’s around, to be able to have dinner at Raglan Road, but nothing would fit our schedule. Still, our party desired to eat there, so off we went.

We arrived at the DTD Pleasure Island parking lot, i.e. ‘Construction Land’, and made our way around the barricades and barrels and cones (Oh my), to the RR doorway. If not for the two tables seated on the patio to the left of the entrance, I would have thought the place was closed. :confused3 Ghost town, crickets chirping in the distance, you get the idea. After checking with the hostess, we stood and waited, while she went and found us a table. Apparently, the delay was in pushing the table for 2 and the table for 4 together, because we walked through an eerily quiet restaurant, with maybe 20 people dining at the time. If you’ve ever been to RR for dinner, picture the exact opposite. Dead quiet, like something out of Hitchcock’s movie The Birds. No hustle, no bustle, just quiet.

Our server, whose name escapes me, was quite polite and efficient. Our service this meal was above average for WDW, and even for RR. I am embarrassed that I don’t recall her name, especially when I hadn’t been drinking with my meal, but these things happen. She knew the menu, knew the product, and was very attentive. After ordering drinks, we placed an order for two appetizers.

Appetizers: (the white cone wrapper reminds me of the little dog on the RCA logo)

RRcalamari.jpg

Calamari City - Salt 'n' Pepper calamari and mixed tempura vegetables served with a spicy remoulade sauce. This continued our calamari motif for the trip. We got the sauce on the side, because you never know if you’ll like it or not. The lightly breaded tempura style calamari contrasted with the heavier breaded ones we tried this trip (Il Mulino and Flying Fish), but it was quite good. The vegetables were a nice touch, and there were green beans, asparagus, and zukes. This calamari did have rings and tentacles, for those readers fearing the ‘squigglies’.

RRribs.jpg

Heaven on Earth - baby back ribs in a Guinness and honey glaze. Excellent item, but I wish they had a little more meat on the bone. The flavor can’t be beat, but the order doesn’t go far. I mean there is more meat on most frog legs I have ever tried (long ago, end of that story). Maybe the most flavorful item on the appetizer menu, but not the best value. No real complaints though, since we knew what we were ordering.

And side by side, just for comparison.

RRcalamariandribs.jpg

After the appetizers arrived, we ordered the lunch items. One child ordered the Crispy Shrimp, with the fries. A good item, and a fairly well sized portion. Our youngest ate all of hers, after declaring the heavy breading ‘yucky’, and peeling off the excess from all of the shrimp. I tried a piece, thought the breading was indeed heavy, but nothing too bad. But hey, I wasn’t the one eating it, nor having to do the peeling.

Our other daughter got the Gold’n Chicken, described as two deep fried chicken goujons. Not sure what a goujon is, not sure I want to find out, but it wasn’t a McNugget, and she finished most of the chicken. Instead of fries, she got the garden veggies with this order, and they were a nice change of pace.

The adults ordered a total of 3 different items:

RRfishandchipsunwrap.jpg

Fish & Chips – a good portion of fish, lightly breaded. The fries with it are huge, and reminded me more of steak fries. They never seem to crisp up like the traditional fries we are used to. This portion was smaller than I remember from dinner, and seemed similar in size to an order from the Cooke’s of Dublin counter service next door. I won’t say it was disappointing, as the flavor was fine, but I expected the plate to look ‘fuller’.

RRsheppie.jpg

Keen Eye for the Shepard’s Pie – in Raglan Road style, its a different presentation. Finely minced meat, well flavored, with a large serving of mashed potatos. Excellent, as always, but stand apart from the more traditional Shepard’s Pie. This lunch serving seemed smaller than previous dinner portions, but so was the price. The only complaint was that it needed more gravy/juice. That was quickly rectified by our server.

RRfadaburger.jpg

Fada Burger – a char grilled beef sirloin burger with bacon, tomato chutney, and Wexford cheddar cheese, and it is served with fries. This was the second best burger of the trip, and the third best I have had while at WDW, ever. :thumbsup2 Cooked perfectly as ordered (medium well), the tomato chutney (which sounds scary) was much better than a fresh tomato slice. A slab of a burger, cooked right, with great tasting bread. How can you go wrong? Well, maybe with those fries. The fries were the same as the other dishes, so refer to the above fries comments. The plate also had a little salad garnish thing on it, that served no real purpose for me, but I was a sport and tried one bite, and it was okay, as a pile of lettuce goes.
(Please take note of the US beer bottle in the picture. It wasn’t mine, because I was driving and wasn’t in the mood for a single beer with lunch this day. A member of our party got that, despite being in an Irish pub, surrounded by lots of great beers, especially Smithwicks. :scared1:
I was so embarrassed……. Sigh.)

I don’t have the total for the bill, the receipt has vanished since it didn’t get packed away with my usual WDW notes.

Summary: The meal was fine. The shepard’s pie and fada burger were excellent, as were both appetizers. The fish (and chips) could have been bigger (and the chips smaller), but the kids meals were better than average. During the day, the restauarant is well lit, and we noticed more of the décor than we typically do at nighttime. It was strange eating at Raglan Road and being able to have a conversation with those around you. The usual loud noises were nowhere to be found, as we are used to so much activity during the dinner service. Still, the a/c was cold, the food was hot, the service was pretty darned good, and we enjoyed our meal. I wouldn’t hesitate to dine here again for lunch, just to be a little different.

NEXT UP: Recap

What--no bread pudding? RR is on my list for Dec. and I actually was thinking lunch b/c the burger sounded so good. Now I know it looks so good, too. The presentation of that fish leaves a lot to be desired...(I guess it would be tacky to eat fish n chips at Cooke's and then have an ADR just for dessert at RR, wouldn't it?:rotfl: Or maybe not...)

I've really enjoyed your reviews again this time!
