Anyone concerned about the Coronavirus in WDW ?

I plan to visit my parents when my kids are on spring break and go to Disney all by myself (my first solo trip woohoo! 🥳). They live in Hillsborough County, where there is now a confirmed case. They are not worried about catching it. They are more worried about the fear and panic that is sure to show up there today and in the coming weeks. 🙄 As of right now the risk of getting the virus is very low, as is the chance of dying from it. Think about it, there are a billion people in China. A BILLION. So yes it is very sad and unsettling that tens of thousands caught the virus and nearly 3,000 there died from it, but we are talking about a very small portion of their population. If you are elderly or immune compromised, make decisions based on your own personal circumstance. Everyone else should wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and try to stay home if you’re sick. Get updates from the CDC website, not the media who loves to blow everything out of proportion because that’s what makes them money! Just live your life and don’t buy into the panic until there is really something to panic about. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think you are correct. They are reporting that the second person is from the center, the first however, was not. I think it’s wide spread now honestly. Like someone above said, now that they are testing more we are going to see it show up everywhere.

Thanks for correcting me.

That doesn't surprise me at all. We had a rash of viral illness here that was NOT the flu (high fever, cough, no other symptoms) as soon as school resumed in January. Our district has many families who traveled to China over the break. Lots of students and teachers were hit. No one was talking about this virus then, but it makes me wonder now. My son was hit pretty hard.
Same here. Both my kids had something end of January...10 days after we traveled internationally. Not to China, but to London. But still. Loads of connections at Heathrow airport. Anyway- wasn’t the flu. Wasn’t strep. Looked at the case study of patient zero- exact same symptoms. Down to the day (my daughter developed mild pneumonia but quickly recovered). Pediatrician told me when I went, and I quote: “I have been doing this for 20 years. I have never seen anything like this before”. He then went on to tell me that he had treated at least 15 kids that day with the same symptoms. All tested negative for flu and strep. So maybe there is another nasty “para-influenza” strain (as he called it) going around. But I do wonder....

LLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced late Sunday that two people had become the first in his state to test “presumptively positive” for the coronavirus and ordered his top health officer to declare a statewide public health emergency.

DeSantis said in a statement that the cases arose in the counties of Manatee and Hillsborough. His announcement did not identify the individuals, specifics of their medical conditions or any routes of possible exposure. COVID-19 is caused by a member of the coronavirus family.

But the state Health Department said the Hillsborough patient had a history of travel to Italy, which has been among the countries hardest hit by the spread of the coronavirus outside Asia.

Authorities said the Manatee patient had not been in any of the countries currently identified for restricted travel by federal authorities.

State officials said both people sought health care and would be under isolation until cleared by public health officials. Both were identified as adults, though their ages weren’t released. Officials also tweeted that they are monitoring others who have been in contact with the two patients.

The governor’s announcement said he was issuing an executive order effective immediately directing the state health officer and surgeon general, Dr. Scott Rivkees, to declare a public health emergency in Florida. He authorized Rivkees to take “any action necessary to protect the public health.”

Rivkees subsequently said his department was moving ahead with those plans while “working directly with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention” at the federal level and with local medical providers.

Rivkee’s own statement said the immediate steps were being taken “to ensure these individuals receive the proper treatment and that anyone who has come into contact with them is following the necessary protocols, limiting or stopping any further spread.”

The governor designated the Florida Department of Health as the lead state agency to coordinate emergency responses and to actively monitor all those with apparent or suspected infections for a period of at least 14 days — or until tests turn up negative.

The governor was expected to hold news conferences on Monday both in Tampa and Miami, said his spokeswoman, Helen Ferre. You can watch his remarks in Tampa live at 10:30 a.m. both on Channel 4 and News4Jax.com.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio issued a statement after the first cases were found in the state:

"The health and safety of every Floridian, especially the elderly and those with compromised immune systems, remain my highest priority. I will continue to work with the Trump Administration and Governor DeSantis to ensure our state has the resources and information it needs. I am working with my colleagues in Congress on a funding package to ensure Florida has every available federal resource to respond to the coronavirus, and I look forward to its swift passage in the coming weeks.”
The Florida developments came on a day when health officials in Washington state confirmed a second person there had died from the new strain of coronavirus — a man in his 70s from a nursing facility near Seattle where dozens of people were sick and had been tested for the virus.

It also came as state and local authorities around the country stepped up testing for the illness as the number of new cases grew nationwide, with new infections announced in Washington state, as well as California, Illinois, Rhode Island and New York.

Three Florida Department of Health labs are now able to test for the new coronavirus, cutting wait times significantly for results, state officials had announced Saturday.

The Florida health officials said in an email that labs in Tampa, Jacksonville and Miami can conduct the tests, which previously had to be sent to federal labs. They said that would mean results should be available 24 to 48 hours afterward — instead of within days.

“The most important thing is it will bring down the average testing time,” said Deputy Health Secretary Shamarial Roberson in a telephone interview. “It helps address this in a more efficient time.”

Florida officials had been awaiting approval for one component of the test from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Roberson said. That approval came Friday.

Sunday’s announcement comes a day after health officials and DeSantis said no cases of the virus had been reported in Florida, but four people who may have been exposed in China and exhibited possible symptoms were awaiting test results. Another 15 similar people tested negative.

In addition, more than 150 Floridians who have returned from China but have not shown symptoms are being monitored until the two-week incubation period passes and asked not to have contact with others, the officials said.

For weeks, Florida health officials had declined to release information about possible infections, citing privacy concerns, but reversed themselves Friday amid mounting questions and political pressure to be more forthcoming to head off any public panic.

The development on the state lab testing was first reported by the Miami Herald. Florida had been waiting for federal officials to allow them to do their own lab testing.

In my opinion the media is blowing this all out of proportion.

Around 3,000 people have died worldwide. More than 90% of those were in China.
I wouldn't worry about your trip to WDW. As others have stated above, just take the same measures as you would to prevent against catching the cold while at WDW.

I can't speak for anyone else here, but my concern is more about being stuck somewhere. I'm not worried about getting it, but if I travel and I can't get back to my home because of some issue that happens with airlines or airports while I am away it is a very big problem.

I don't think the media is blowing it out of proportion - they are just discussing it. It is people's reactions that are blowing it out of proportion. Edit to add: The FL gov is declaring a state of emergency - so if people are going to blame the media they may want to blame the goverment too.

I'm not worried about getting it, although I'm a cranky person when I'm sick. I am concerned about the elderly and how this will affect my husband's job since he has constant contact with the elderly and people who are already sick to begin with.

Governments are declaring a state of emergency, flights are being canceled, cities are quarantining, schools closing, public events canceled, three Disney parks closed and it’s all the media blowing it out of proportion. Whatever. I suppose you think everyone involved in those other decisions is blowing it out of proportion too?

Just FYI, the governor declared a public health emergency, not a state of emergency.

Lol. This morning on CNBC two Dr's. Have a different opinion. One suggested that they wonder about the March Madness tournament. Dow futures on Mr. Toads wild ride. Since last night another 1000 point swing.

That's the first thing that came to my mind also, we are going to the DW in one week, we are flying , so I booked us a minivan to drive back home just in case we have to.

I’m glad it’s funny to someone. :confused3
I couldn’t care less about March Madness or the stock market. I care about getting stuck in another state while I have 3 cats at home waiting for my return.

Just booked Universal Orlando for October and Walt Disney World for December. No worries.... but I also bought cancellation insurance for $ 44 , which I always do, just in case. I’ll book my flights in the next few months.

My DD’s college Spring Break starts in 5 days. She and 40 of her friends are going to Daytona Beach for the week. I am hoping that the spread is still in an early enough stage that they will be ok. They aren’t going to be around the general public exactly, but they will be around tons of other college students.

It’s only a matter of time until it hits the college campuses themselves, especially with students traveling far and wide for Spring Breaks. Some will invariably bring the virus back to their campuses if it is not already there.

This is what worries me. We're about to see mass migrations of college and school age kids and families as spring breaks crank up. And Easter travel. And March Madness, which will see fans and teams bouncing coast to coast in crowded arenas. There's a reason China suspended travel around Chinese New Year, and I think we're heading into the same sort of mass travel time. I don't know that it's necessary to stop all of this, but I'm not sure such mass gatherings and travel are wise, either.

It's all related. Travel outside this country is something to be concerned about . If your in this country you'll be fine.

2 people in our construction trailer just returned from Thailand over the weekend. I have some documents I need signed by 1 of them. I am sooooo dragging my feet going to talk to him. I just don’t even want to be in the same room.

We are booked to go to WDW mid-May. Hubby is questioning flying (suggested cancelling flights & driving) and has asked me what our cancellation policies for room are. I say there’s still a lot of time and we should just chill, see how things play out. Soon the temps will rise significantly both in Florida and where we live (same climate, really). I want to see what happens when flu season subsides.

Odds are a large amount of people will get this and most of them will recover.
We don't have all the answers yet - but that seems to be the case based on what we know today.

My primary concern is being stuck in Florida for two weeks in quarantine. If I am in some sort of quarantine where will that be?
Been looking forward to this spring break vacation with my son for almost a year now, but I think we will have to cancel it.

Considering this thing has been in China for a year ... which means it had already traveled outside of China a long time ago .... they very well could have had it. China kept it under wraps a long time, refused outside research or medical professionals to identify it. When you have something that there can be asymptomatic carriers, there will be plenty of spread long before it is identified. Then, boom, it seems to explode as the virus reaches those that would be most impacted by it, that would be high risk for serious health impact or death.
