A Big part of the Big Problem... Staffing

There is a simple solution. Pay people….a …..decent……wage.

Not too many jobs open out there that pay 20-25 an hour or more.
Not every job is supposed to be a living wage. Some jobs are for kids to put gas in their car so they can go on a date. The problem is, we have way to many unskilled or unmotivated adults trying to work jobs intended for teens, and trying to use these jobs to pay a mortgage.

Our country needs to stop sending middle class jobs to Mexico and china, or paying offshore firms to develop our software for 1/3 the cost as on shore.

My husband and I were part of the manufacturing workforce that got displaced in the 90's. Jobs sent to Mexico. We had just gotten married and had a small house with a mortgage. We worked what jobs we could, went back to school. My hubby finished his degree and got a job in IT. He jumped around jobs for a few years gaining experience and knowledge. He has been in his current position for 20 years. Life gives you lemons, you make lemonade! It's not easy, didn't have much for years, but we worked, we lived and we loved life. You can make things happen, but its not overnight! 🙂

Again tho, you are assuming all service industry businesses are corporations who get millions in tax breaks. Many are not. In reality, 73% of the fast food employment is from individual franchises. More than 7 in 10 restaruants are single unit operations and more than 9 in 10 have fewer than 50 employees. Those generally don't get the "millions in tax breaks" you mention. Nor are they making record profits like Amazon and walmart.

This would be true in a pure Socialistic Society. Last I checked that is not the USA. I find it interesting that we do not give the free market it's credit. Disney has a Union and since the union came in the minimum wage has gone from the Minimum wage of $7.75 an hour to currently $15 an hour. If I am not mistaken, the current contract will be up for renewal next year, so negotiations will start this year. Want to bet the minimum is going to increase again?

Take a look around your area, and tell me again how those places can be staffed with just “people looking for money for a date”

Unwillingness to forgo record profits and growth is what drives the prices up, the cost of the labor is only a product of that concept. If Disney were content with say a billion dollar profit they could easily raise wages and have 0 issues with staffing. Let's not lose sight of the real issue.
I know some had issues with how Eisner ran things.... but he built two theme parks a number of new resorts and helped expand both MK and Epcot.

Iger is the one I blame more for the corporate mentality of always needing to increase and maximize profits. How can we make more money... without it costing us anything? Hey let's charge for parking at the resorts... they do that in big cities all the time. Let's build a whole new "land" with a couple of new attraction... we can close a couple of attractions and cut operational cost and then charge extra for the new attractions... YoY.

Chapek has gotten in there and to make it seem like he is doing a good job... he has to cut cost and raise prices so they can show an improvement in profits. And let's face it with TV, Film and now streaming all taking a hit.... Parks and Resorts us the CASH COW he has to milk.

CEO work for investors, not customers...

I have noticed less staffing issues on my last trip at attractions and restaurants... at least what you can see. But still issues getting attractions going in the morning - is that not enough staff for operations? Or not enough staff and spending on maintenance?

The stores don't have a choice on how much those royalties are or if they are going to pay them. They don't get to choose to not pay the royalties and instead give it to employees. They can pay it or not have a franchise anymore. McDonalds Corp tax liability or breaks are not passed down to the franchise owner. The franchise owner might get a small break depending on circumstances, but not enough to make a big difference.

Any job that you do full time should be good enough to support at least a single household. The idea of jobs that don't is nuts. And I think the worker has realized this over lockdown and said to themselves that enough is enough.

Not sure if all jobs should be a living wage. Some are meant to be second jobs and some are for those just starting in their career. Employers are going to pay what the market dictates.

The main problem with raising the minimum wage or mandating a living wage is that there really is no way to manage that without a socialist system. When you force employers to raise wages then the cost of goods automatically go up. Therefore what was a livable wage is no longer going to be livable and it will create an endless cycle.

Ultimately companies are not charities and are there to make a profit. I disagree with Disney's choices as I think long term they are destroying their brand for short term gains but it is what it is.
 
Speaking of disney worker shortage and the earning my ears- they are cycling in a lot of Fall advantage CPs right now (my dd happens to be one). In fact pretty much every Monday they have a new crop of kids coming in. So I wouldn’t read too much into those. There is only so much housing space in Flamingo Crossing though it’s clearly increased with the opening of flamingo crossings West.

While my daughter is there for the DCP, I am looking at the cost of her rent at flamingo and what she’s getting paid and honestly worried if she’s going to be OK. This is a kid who has planned to pack lunches and eat frugally but they’re not bringing home a lot of money. Also they can be charged for overages on things like electricity and the Wi-Fi is not the best meaning she’s using our data cap a lot on her cell phone so we just switched to unlimited at a higher cost.
With the cost of everything going up so high I’m really worried. Clearly other kids are making it work so I’m hoping it’s going to be OK.

A living wage is a complicated thing- depending on where you live and with inflation what sounds like a living wage in one location could be anything but in another.

Your talking about a wage price spiral. But there is a market here too.

The cost of goods don't automatically go up. Customers have to be willing to pay more. If they don't, then margins get squeezed. Now, corporate margins have been going up for decades, so they can deal with some squeezing.

It's hard to teach kids about inflation and spending if this is the first time you're going through it. I was in preschool and kindergarten the last the US experienced inflation like we're seeing today. I recommend watching the All in the Family episodes that covered inflation.

I’m a millennial myself so this is the first big shock inflation I remember vividly. I remember the great recession but this is completely different. We taught her how to budget before she went off but even I’m having a hard time adjusting to rising costs. So we will see how she does.

I'm gen x.

When I finished up university in the 90s, both inflation and rates were much higher. And I didn't have a smart phone. There were far fewer subscription based services, so there are a lot of opportunities to find places to cut today. The market dropping now feels more like the early 2000s than 2008.

We'll all adapt and figure this out. Employees definitely need to get paid more.
