Lots of service dogs this trip

Just curious. We are allergic to dogs (and HORRIBLY allergic to cats). When we stay at poly....is there a chance we'll stay in a room that had a pet?

Small chance but yes there is. There is also a chance that people brought dander with them from their home pet on luggage and/or clothing (this bothers me as an allergy sufferer). I would communicate this with the front desk so they can make proper accommodations for your family

No. Pets are not allowed in Disney resorts.

However, service dogs and ponies are permitted. If one stayed in your room before you did, I guess you would have to request a hypoallergenic cleaning. And hope that the pony was housebroken.

Ponies are typically diapered...but still, as much as I love mine I wouldn't let me in my house diapered or not. Lol

Pets expressly may not be allowed in but there are dogs in rooms and they may or may not be service animals due to Disney not adequately questioning guests when they bring animals with them.

Still, I do think the odds are small that you'll get a room that had an animal in it. Even though we have personally seen an increase in animals in the parks over the past couple of years. in 2011 we never saw an animal in the parks. Now, we see them every trip. Lots? No. Some? Yes.

You have a pony? Color me green with envy! I love ponies and was one of those annoying little girls who asked for one every Christmas.

We've been coming to WDW every year for over 10 years and this trip we've seen a lot of service dogs for people who appear to be just fine.

Now, I know there are invisible illnesses but I've seen at least 10 dogs in a week with people in the parks. The only person that could have used a dog was a blind man and even he didn't have one. Just seems like everything else in society lately - overkill.

I used to agree with this, but I don't anymore. My Mom was a brittle diabetic. She looked fine, but would have radical shifts in her blood sugar level and when it went too low, you'd think she was drunk looking at her (slurred speech, etc), but it was a very dangerous situation that happened quickly and without warning. Before she passed away, we were looking into getting a service dog for her -- they can be trained to sense the subtle changes that happen when a persons blood sugar level is dropping, and they can alert the person. Unfortunately, before we got into the process, my Mom passed away, but now that I know that service dogs can be used for this, as well as detecting seizures and other things, I know that there are LOTS of not so obvious reasons taht a service dog can be a real asset to peple.

Sure, there ARE people that abuse them, but the service dog can be a real lifesaver for lots of people. I think letting a few creeps thru the cracks to save a lot of other people is worthwhile.

IMO, if they are going to allow animals for any reason in Guest rooms, they need to set aside a wing or floor or building for them.

Actually Canada has a system where the trainers are certified by the government, and I believe, the dogs are registered through the government. The trainers are listed as being certified by the government, and only dogs trained by those trainers are "service" dogs. Probably wouldn't happen in this country, but there are systems in other countries that could possibly work.
there are owners that have trained their own service dogs. I remember a neighbor when I was growing up who trained his third dog himself cause he couldn't afford a third dog after the first 2 had to be retired. how does Canada handle situations like this. I am just asking cause I am wondering

Perhaps in cases like that, the certified trainers can simply test and then certify those animals for free or a low fee. This might be a solution in both the U.S. (if the rules are ever changed) and Canada.

So it sounds like I can just bring my dogs and tell Disney they are service animals with no proof? I wouldn't do that but it appears there are no requirements?
Can I call my budgie a service pet and bring him to magic kingdom too?

They can not legally do that. People who use service animals must be able to book any room that is open to anyone else with out penalty as by law.

You do understand people lie. You can't force people to prove what service the dog has been trained for so question 1 is yes or now and then question 2 people lie all the time. At least 1 of the fakers I know says the dog smells for paprika because they have a paprika allergy. The person doesn't have that allergy and the dog doesn't smell for it at all just some stupid thing they came up with. No one can force her to prove it so she gets away with it.

No. Service animals can only be dogs or small ponies.
There are cases of pigs and snakes being brought on planes. Will this eventually make it's way to other places too? Will those who want to bring them on planes cry unfair? Why are they not allowed to bring their support animal with them to the theme park but they are allowed on the plane? They are they not equal? I can see it happening if the wrong (or would it be right) person got a burr under their butt. Can you?

I believe I've repeatedly stated in this thread that people lie. I believe I've repeatedly said that I want to improve the requirements above what is done now. And yes, would using the tools in place stop everyone? Of course not. No one said it would. Would it stop some? Yes. Would adding even 1 layer of added level of verification stop some? Yes it would. Not all, of course not. But anything to make it harder. And yeah, it sucks it is harder for the legit folks. Just like it sucks it's harder it is for DAC guests because of that abuse. The abusers always make it harder for the legit folks. And it sucks.
