Disney's YACHT & BEACH CLUB RESORTS Information & Questions

Would your mother consider renting a wheelchair or scooter, even for just the days you might need it? The MK day and when you would be going to France? You can rent from Disney, at the parks, I believe or from an offsite company that will deliver to the resorts. Not sure what the costs or terms are, if there are any minimum rental times.

:thumbsup2

Yes, we will have to rent a wheelchair. She wouldnt know how to operate a scooter and would panic if she had to learn. Ive never had to rent a wheelchair, so Ill look into my options! Disboards is so great with info! I know my mother would be too scared to step into the boat. Shed be afraid of losing her balance, and once she gets scared, you cant get her out of a chair for a week. We'll skip France. Maybe Ill look for another resort with a restaurant in the lobby. We'll have a rental car, so we can be dropped off at the door.

If anyone has info on the grip bars in "standard" (any view) rooms, please let me know. Also about the vanities in the accessible rooms. I will change my daughter's reservation if the vanity area is on the outside (if she does need an accessible room) Or, if anyone has a number directly to the resort, please let me know. The CMs on the generic phone arent always familiar with everything at every resort.

There are no published telephone numbers directly to the resorts. They go to an off site call center.
Wheelchair rental info is available on the DisABILITIES forum. It is cheaper to rent from an off site vendor and you would have use of it in & around the resort, which is what you need. You could easily wheel her through the International Gateway entrance to Epcot and experience dinner in France. She might love this adventure.
Good Luck

We checked into the Beach Club around 11:40am. The room was ready a few minutes later. After a search mission to figure out where they put our room, we arrived at our standard view room. I call it the Pirate slide view. We have full balcony and a big, flat roof, but it is a nice location. I think that we would be able to see the Star Wars fireworks from this room, if we were in it to see them. :)

We rode Soarin' for the first time since they updated it, and I loved it. ::yes:: I need to make another fast pass for that ride.

The World Showcase was hot and crowded. We are at Storm along Bay right now. I have finally converted DH into a fan of this pool. :)

We walked past the BC quiet pool and we didn't see any construction. But there is a new sidewalk to that side of the pool.

They still have September activity schedules by the elevators.

Disney released a 20% discount for annual pass holders that included quick service at the Marketplace. I got 20% off my refillable mug. :). We will take advantage of this discount. ::yes::

Thanks for the update on the start of your trip. Have a fantastic time.

PS- If you read this and get a chance- I need a new museum guess for the DC trip report. Everyone got it wrong so I am giving another chance.
You can answer here if you want.

Does anyone know if there are grip bars in the bathroom in the standard (all views) rooms? I cant remember and my mother is seriously thinking of coming too. I booked an accessible room for her just in case, before Mondays promo goes out to the public. I would love to change it if the standard rooms offered the grip bars in the bathroom. She is not in a wheelchair, but does use a walker. She never leaves the room except to go to dinner with the family. She loves YC/BC for their balconies and scenery. She is perfectly happy people watching and reading her books on the balcony all day. Also, are the vanity areas in the accessible rooms inside the toilet / tub area or outside? If they are outside, we might have our daughter (will be 13) stay in the room with her and hubby and I can have our own room for the first time in 26 years!!!! But my daughter is a vanity HOG and I dont want my mothers bathroom held up for hours every morning and night! Last years trip to the Poly was a little challenging!
No, the non-accessible rooms do not have any grab bars.
You may want to read a previous post of mine, recounting a recent visit to the YC, which was booked as a standard room, but given an accessible room. The room only had a roll-in shower, but some accessible rooms have tubs - both have grab bars. The shower actually has a fold-down seat, as well.

I agree with the suggestion to rent from an off-site provider for a wheelchair, if not a scooter. That will enable the chair to be kept at the resort. They will deliver and pick up.

Hoping no one got hurt too bad. A fire truck has been out near the temporary bus stop for over 30 minutes. A thunderstorm has been going on for over two hours. Can't upload pictures as it is too large.

Yikes!

Hope everyone is ok!

I told you my better half is not enthusiastic about dressing up.

I told him I have a simple idea for a costume, which is just t-shirts (OK, I'll admit, that's not entirely true, but most of the costume is just a simple tshirt) and he still is not happy about it.

But No Worries, I don't think he will leave me downhearted.

:hmghost:

Do they sell costumes that look like cups of coffee?

We have gone as bacon and eggs the ladt two years with lots of folks saying how much they love them.

A t-shirt and maybe some ears would work great as a simple costume

There is a big thunderstorm rolling through tonight. We got rained out of the Star Wars fireworks. They stopped the boats and ran buses for the Epcot resorts instead. Now I have to hope it doesn't rain like this for the Halloween party tomorrow.

We were at BC last Oct in a standard room, there were no grab bars in the showers. However we had prepared for this, and I had picked up a grab bar from our local Home Depot that attaches to the wall with suction cups for the shower in my mom's room. I had my husband push and pull on it to make sure it was a strong hold. We also pack a non slip mat to put on the tub floor so she doesn't slip.
When I was planning this trip I found the DisAbilities thread very helpful. I'm sure someone there could answer any questions.
Hope this helps! And have a great trip!

Oh Thank you! This is what I needed to know! I will not book the roll in shower as my mother is not in a wheel chair and can walk around a room. Im sure she will LOVE the 30 second door, allowing her time to get out of the room and not have to hold the door and push the walker. At home she uses a cane, but when we go out, she gets scared she will fall and uses the full walker. Its a balance issue, not a walking problem...other than she is slower than many and tires easier. We will be going in March and she will be 79 then. She wont need the day bed or lounge...it will just be her, and possibly my daughter. Im hope the accessible room with tub is similar, but at this point, knowing there are no grips in the regular rooms, I wont feel as guilty keeping the accessible room I booked for her even though she is not in a wheelchair. She has to have the grips. Thanks again! Youre detailed description helped a lot.

Also, are the vanity areas in the accessible rooms inside the toilet / tub area or outside?

We stayed in a handicap accessible room at the BC and the vanity was inside the room with the toilet and shower.

Wonderful idea about the mat. Not sure she would feel secure with the suction grips. She used them at her house for about a year and they kept popping off. We would go to her house weekly to reattach. Luckily she lives fairly close! After the 30th time or so, we re-did her bath with the real bars and a swing door on the tub. She is falling more and more often lately. At least once a month. She has yet to break a hip, but Im afraid that will be next and we definitely dont want it happening in Florida. I will get a mat for sure! Thank you so much!

There was a pocket door, which closed off the vanity, toilet, and shower from the rest of the room, unlike standard rooms, which have a door between the vanity area and toilet/tub.
I assume that the accessible rooms are all located near the main elevators.

Thanks! You are all super helpful! Im leaning towards having my daughter stay with her regardless and she can just come to our room to get ready in the morning, for dinner etc.. Ah to be a teen again. Hair has to be perfect for those selfies!!!

Our handicap room had a connecting door. Maybe you can ask for your rooms to have one. :)
