When a Foodie and a Picky Eater invade Disney World A 9/5-9/10 Updated 9/29

Our second day had us awaken pretty early to get down to the Wilderness Lodge docks to head to Fort Wilderness Campground to take in a place that I never been to in all my visits down to the "World" that being Trail's End Restaurant.

As you can see it was an absolutely jaw dropping beautiful day out. I find there's nothing more relaxing at Disney than to hop on one of the boats around Bay Lake, and just let the wind go through your hair as you take in the sights. I don't know why, but I find it very calming.

I first heard about Trail's End from Josh of EasyWDW who dubbed it one of the best unknown lesser traveled spots in Disney to get a tasty meal at very affordable Disney prices. He wasn't kidding the breakfast buffet was only 18$ per person. It may not be the mammoth buffet the size of Boma, but what Trail's End has it does very very well. It has all the buffet classics, with a few comfort food twists on the menu as well.

One thing I really enjoyed on the buffet was that the sausages weren't those tiny skinny ones, but actually fully plump ones. I guess let's get the things that were kind of lackluster out of the way. The shredded hashbrowns were really bland compared to the other potato dish (More on that in a bit). Also the sausage gravy wasn't very peppery. I like to have that kick of pepper inside my sausage gravy, I guess Disney just plays itself and doesn't over-season their dishes to reach more people.

The really good? The pecan praline sauce they have on the buffet. It was meant to be used on their French toast bread pudding, but I decided to put it on top of the world famous Mickey waffle instead. They also had pulled pork Eggs Benedict. I remember having something similar to it a few years ago at The Whispering Canyon Cafe, and this was just as good. I did though go back at one time just to get some of the pulled pork since it was that good.

The showstopper? The Smoked Beef Brisket Potato Hash. Josh on EasyWDW said this was the best thing on the entire buffet lineup, and I have to agree. Those cubes of beefy smoky goodness were amazing. The potatoes were perfectly seasoned cooked with onions and peppers as well. I could have filled up nearly an entire plate with this stuff. Plus I get extra beef brisket since my GF isn't fond of red meat so she kept sliding those delicious brisket cubes onto my plate.

Would we be back? Absolutely, and we ended up here again on our departure day for a little twist on what we experienced today. If you don't mind a buffet that doesn't have characters, and is a little bit out of the way, but not really, Trail's End is a place that you really should stop in and give a shot.

I love your photos! That food looks amazing. This place may not be a "hidden" gem, but it was kind of hidden to me! I had no idea it was that cheap. I am going to have to check that out! Thank you for sharing!

Loving your views! The WL is definitely my favorite resort at Disney, too. So beautiful. I'm dying to try Trails End, too. I love your photos; can't wait for more!!

We also visited Trails End for the first time on our last trip for dinner...equally wonderful meal!

Great reviews and your pictures are absolutely gorgeous!!

Thanks, photography is a hobby of mine, and I love when I get to go somewhere as photogenic as Disney.

The food was amazing! Trail's End I believe is the cheapest buffet on Disney for breakfast next to the one they have at the Wave.

Even with all the construction going on, I still think the Lodge is my favorite resort.

Great review! And your view!!! So perfect...

Talk about hitting the jackpot with room views. We watched Wishes from there a few times during the trip.

We also visited Trails End for the first time on our last trip for dinner...equally wonderful meal!

We were thinking about trying out the dinner buffet there, but my GF isn't that big of an eater so the Dinner price of most buffets would be a waste on her.

So, we took the boat from Fort Wilderness back to the Magic Kingdom for some more exploring and what not.

The one thing that I really enjoyed with this trip was the minuscule crowds. Seriously with proper planning, and FP+ usage we were getting up to our 8th/9th/10th FP+ usage in a single day. Outside of the 7DMT and FEA you could pretty much find whatever ride you wanted when you wanted.

Back to the food...While we were full from the massive feast at Trail's End, we both were in the need of something refreshing and perhaps slightly sweet.

Now prior to this my GF believed she might have a pineapple allergy, so she didn't want to risk a breakout getting a Dole Whip, so I suggested it's relative, the Citrus Swirl. What was amazing, I don't know if it was Pixie Dust, or they seriously had an issue with the registers, but when we got to the counter the cast member said their Magic Band system was down, and gave us two free Citrus Swirls! Maybe it was the Happy Anniversary pins we had, and my the 1st visit pin my GF had on, but who knows. It was a nice surprise nonetheless.

What I love about this, is that it's not sickly sweet. You have the sweetness from the vanilla, but the citrus part of the swirl has that perfect tart, acidic, orange flavor. Very similar to the Aranciata San Pellegrino Italian soda. The two work perfectly hand in hand. It's like a slightly more refined and adult dreamsicle.

We made our way out for some late afternooon relaxation back at the Wilderness Lodge, not before I took quite a few pictures;

Later in the night we'll be having dinner at the California Grill.

Great photos and review of the food. We are locals and are always looking for new dining options at Disney so appreciate all the details.

Score! Nothing wrong with free Citrus Swirls. Despite the overwhelming support for the Dole Whip on these boards (and I have indulged a couple times myself), I prefer the Citrus Swirl.

By the way, Trails End looks great. I have not been since it has always seemed a bit out of the way to me, but all the reviews I have seen are glowing, so maybe I should try it sometime.

Your pictures and commentary are wonderful!! The WLV is.our DVC home.Love it there. Trails Ends dinner buffet has been our favorite go to out of the way place.Even our ds 16 year old actually smiles when we go. Looking forward to more. Thanks so much

Trails End is one of our favorites for just these reasons. It's wonderful to stay at WL and take the boat over in the morning.

So, when it comes to my favorite restaurant on Disney property it tends to take me to the Contemporary and the California Grill. I know a lot of people preferred it before the current refurb, and that the view is much better than any of the food offerings, but I'm still a fan. I think in all my times I've been at the California Grill I never had a bad meal foodwise, and maybe just once had rotten service.

However, I do agree that it's disappointing how they laid out the restaurant putting 4 top tables in the prime viewing area, and forcing parties of 2 to sit awkwardly in a line across the middle of the restaurant. I really loathe those tables as they are literally on top of each other, and you have to squeeze in between tables to get in and out as others dined around you.

Though I will say we ended up with an okay view I suppose. We were the second table from the door to the western side observation desk. This is where I suppose people just worry about themselves and not the other guests in attendance. In front of the door was a pretty large sign that said the deck was closed because of the summer heat, and they don't people near the door to get blasted by the heat when the door would open and close. In the course of our dinner at least I'd say 13-15 people went on the deck, one person actually tripped over the sign coming back in.

Well, let's move on from the people watching and get to the main attraction the food.

I was very upset to see that my favorite Pork Belly Nigri was no longer on the menu, apparently it was taken off the week prior. We went in with the idea of splitting an appetizer, getting our own salads, and desserts, skipping an entree since my GF is kind of a picky eater and nothing really stood out to her.

We decided to share the Rotisserie Chicken Flatbread with Tomato and Corn Salsa, Pepperjack Cheese, Queso Fresco, and Spicy Crema.

This was simply phenomenal. It hit on all levels, all the ingredients worked in harmony. My GF found the spicy crema just a bit too spicy, to me it reminded me of a spicy version of Big Mac sauce from McDonalds.

My GF picked the Artisan Romaine Salad, with Roasted Garlic Dressing, Boquerones (Omitted), Roasted Tomatoes, Foccacia Croutons, and Parmiggiano-Reggiano. She really liked this salad, but stated it's a bit well plain. The flavors worked well, but it wasn't a life changing experience.

29527999061_5dec0ee22a_k.jpg

I decided upon The Crispy Rock Shrimp Salad with Spicy Greens, Subarashii Pears, Soy Reduction, and Wasabi Cream. I've had this before and it sure doesn't disappoint. It's kind of misleading, but there is close to nearly a dozen fried rock shrimps through out this dish.

The dessert menu;

My GF picked the Warm Homemade Fritters, Apple Stuffed, and Cinnamon Dusted with a Trio of Dipping Sauces. I'm convinced that this was her favorite dish of the entire trip. She loved all the sauces, especially the cream one and the fruit jam. We couldn't figure out if it was raspberries or cherry but it was delicious.

I also ended up loving my decision;

The S'Mores Creme Brulee, Marshmallow Custard, Milk Chocolate Ganache, and Caramelized Turbinando Sugar. The toasted jumbo sized marshmallows were amazing, but the show stopper was the graham cracker cookie bar thing.

Look at the goodness that is the inside of this thing. That's not where the treats ended though.

We were gifted this for our Anniversary;

It may look like a simple cupcake, but it was actually filled like a Boston Creme pie. Also the chocolate ganache on this cupcake was immense.

I can't say enough good things about the California Grill. Our server Ron was amazing. He made us feel like family, didn't rush us through the service. We took our time and had a nice leisurely romantic dinner. I cannot wait to go back, and we'll be back in November, only this time to try their new Sunday Brunch.

One last final shot over MK horizon.
