The New Caribbean Beach FAQ Part VII

Just got back from a great week at CBR! We checked in on a Sunday, and I sent a room request the Tuesday before via fax. We had 4 standard rooms booked (13 of us) and requested Jamaica 45 and 2 rooms with Murphy beds. The only request we didn't receive was one of the Murphy bed rooms was assigned to the wrong party. Just wanted to let everyone know the faxed request seemed to be received and considered.

The only concern we had at CBR was it seemed there were people smoking in non-designated areas quite frequently - at the quiet pool, on the bridges, at the bottom of the building steps, etc. We didn't complain about it but I was wondering if this is just a CBR issue, or is Disney being more lax in general on smoking rules than they have been in previous years?

Thanks for the review! Glad that you had a great time.

I've been reading a lot of complaints about people smoking in non-designated areas at the resorts (the most recent that I read were at Pop, AoA and CSR). I think that people just don't give a care whether or not they are supposed to smoke in the designated areas only.

I am gonna jump in on behalf of smokers. I am not a smoker but my husband is and I, therefore, have experienced WDW from the perspective of my smoker.

Even my smoker is annoyed by those who do not adhere to the designated areas rules. While the non-smoking rooms and designated areas do make his vacation experience less convenient than it used to be, he understands perfectly that it is Disney's property and they are certainly within their rights to make any rules they want and he makes every effort to adhere to those rules as they apply to smokers.

We have probably all witnessed SOME folks smoking outside of their designated areas but, it's only a few.

Some people (smokers or not) blatantly don't care about any rules. Most all of us are annoyed by those people no matter which rule they're breaking. Like the ones who sit on the queue rail within inches of the sign that says "do not sit on rail". You know the type. There's little to be done about people like that. Anywhere.

Some of those you see smoking outside the areas saw someone else smoking there and assumed it was a designated area without checking closely enough.

Some may have misunderstood a CMs directions to the nearest smoking area.

Some may have gotten frustrated after asking several CMs where the nearest smoking area is and hearing "I'm not sure" for the umpteenth time. (It happens and it is NOT fun when you're with your cranky smoker.)

Some are after their first smoke after checking into a resort that is new to them and after some effort just looked for the least populated spot they could find because they really don't want to bother anyone but just plain didn't have their bearings well enough to find anything yet. On our last trip, we were at POR (Alligator Bayou area) for the first time and that first evening was a doozy - it was getting dark, all the buildings looked alike and there's so much foliage (which is, of course, absolutely beautiful) that you can't really see where the paths go... we did find the smoking area after a while but, boy, that was NOT a fun hike if you know what I mean. Ever since WDW resorts went non-smoking, we have made room requests to be situated as near a smoking area as possible with varying results. For our upcoming stay at CBR, we will again be making that request because, a smoker typically needs that first fix of the day before his eyes are fully open and certainly before he gets himself ready for the day. (Even more so than us coffee-addicts.)

And, Disney seems to be trying harder and harder to hide the smokers from non-smoking guests to the point that the areas are becoming fewer and are more and more hidden. But once they are found, they are typically busy places and well-used by many.

Anyway, my point is, smokers aren't trying to ruin anyone's vacation. They are only trying to enjoy theirs without going into withdrawal. Some people are jerks (smokers or not) and will always behave as though the rules do not apply to them. But, I promise you, MOST of your Disney-loving smokers are following the rules at least as well as anyone else.

(Aside: Lisa, I did NOT read any overt or implied negative connotation toward smokers in your comment. I only used your post as a jumping off point to let folks know that it's only SOME smokers - typically uniformed, misinformed or the occasional outright jerk - that are smoking out of the areas and everyone else is doing the absolute best they can to follow the rules.)

Thanks for posting your thoughts. I didn't take offense to it at all. I really should go back and edit my post to say "some smokers". I should also post that a whole lotta folks out there don't adhere to any rules thinking that they spent so-and-so amount of money on a vacation and, by golly, they are going to do what they want to do. We experienced a lot of that this past trip. As a matter of fact, I just wrote about once two such incidents during just a day at Hollywood Studios. Our world is becoming such an "entitled" world with no thought whatsoever to others.

Yep. I'll always be a rule follower and I'll always be greatly annoyed by those who think they are "above the law". But, really, what do you do? You just keep following the rules and assume that karma will bite them in the butt someday. ;)

And I heard Karma's bite is one heckofa bite. ::yes:: The only time I was a rule breaker was when I took an iron on a cruise ship and didn't know that I couldn't. Oh and on our last trip when I tried my best to get past security to take pictures of the new CBR rooms. Other than that, I'm a stickler for rules.

Yep. I read that cruise report of yours. I've never cruised before so I certainly wouldn't have imagined such a rule about irons. But, that's okay because, as a rule, I don't iron.

I'm also keeping up with your current TR. (Hello. My name is Connie and I'm a lurker. :headache:) And rules or not, spying on behalf of your fellow DISers is the exception and generally encouraged. :rolleyes1 (Of course, "knowing" you from your TRs, I doubt you would have actually *broken* the rules. Maybe just *bent* them a bit. We don't want to waste our vacations sitting in Disney jail now do we?) :rotfl:

In some of the smokers defense many years ago I lit up in a park and a cast member came up to me and informed me that I couldn't smoke there, I needed to go to a smoking section. Then and only then did I realize they even had designated smoking areas.

I may have missed posts about this. Right now our plan is to use the Magical Express to the resort and then whatever means of transportation we can find while there! (ha!)

Would it be better to rent a car? We are not opposed to renting a vehicle at the airport but we are meeting up with my in-laws at the resort and they seem to think it's too much of a hassle. My FIL has a bad back and I am thinking he may not realize how much walking might be involved at the resort alone.:yay:

28 days to go!

I've had a very nerve racking week. So glad I have a Disney trip in my future to look forward to. Just a few more weeks!!!!!!:yay:

Just got back from another wonderful day... We hit EPCOT, MK, had fried chicken on the beach at Fort Wilderness, took the ferry to the Contemporary and rode the escalators up and down for a few minutes, hopped on the monorail to the MK where we took a few sneaky pictures of the Halloween party and rode a bendy-bus back with 4 other peeps.

We're having a blast and are so happy that we chose the CBR, thanks again gang!!!

We are currently at CBR on our 7th out of 9 days. This is our first stay at CBR, and I LOVE the rooms. We are in Jamaica Building 45 and couldn't be happier with our room location. It is just across from the bridge to Centertown, just down from the beach and pool, and very close to parking. We drove, so that is a plus. The room renovations are wonderful. We have stayed at POR several times in AB, and these rooms seem larger. There is a murphy bed in one of our two connecting rooms. I love that I got every request I made. I faxed, phoned, and selected preferences through online check-in within the 7 days before we left.

The rooms have queen beds, lots of dark wood and bamboo touches, and I especially love the sliding doors to the bathroom area. What a great touch. There are 3 chests in the room: one holds the fridge, one has two deep drawers, and one is the nightstand. All three of these are fitted with two standard plugs plus two USB plugs, with a total of 6 USB plugs and 6 easily accessible regular plugs (not to mention the ones on the wall and in the bathroom). This is a huge plus, with all the cameras, smartphones, tablets, computers, etc. that need char need charging at night.

We love everything about the resort except Centertown... it just looks worn and dated to us... but that is totally a personal preference thing. It isn't a huge issue, as we're only there long enough to fill our mugs. Other than that it is REALLY a beautiful resort, and the location is GREAT. Thanks so much for this thread and others where I learned so much about all the great things CBR has to offer!!

MAJOR pixiedust: to all contributors!

:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I was hoping someone would let me know how long it would take to get to each park from CBR. We are rope drop people and want to a lot of time to get there at rope drop. Thanks!

We also check in on the 14th. I requested Aruba or Jamaica. Do we know if any of those building have the refurbished rooms? Maybe I should change my request?

Yes, both Aruba and Jamaica are completely refurbished! Have a great trip!

15 minutes maximum on bus (Hollywood studios and Epcot less than this). I would plan an extra 30 minutes to be on the safe side though. My experience of waiting times at CBR was very good. Have a great time :)

I am so jealous of all of you in Disney right now. I am still 86 days away. Hope your vacations are all magical. pixiedust:

Just a note that depending which building you are at, some of the early buses are really crowded if you are on the last half of the pick ups.

Was there last week in the pirate rooms (blanking on the building name) and once my mom (stiff knee) had to stand with no one willing to give up a seat.
