Downtown Disney...DON'T DO IT

We went to Downtown Disney on Saturday night. We have been going to downtown Disney at least one night every trip, every year for the past 30 years.

It was so crowded. It may have been because of the construction and much of Downtown Disney blocked off so less room for the crowds to spread out.

Traffic and parking are already horrible in that area but I have never seen such a CLUSTER____ in my life!!!! First you have the usual traffic problems, and it is made worse by horrible traffic lights(that seemed like they were being controlled by Disney Employees sitting on the corner. We sat at an intersection and without exaggeration, the lights for all four directions were red, and the don't walk sign were lit in all four directions for a good 7-10 minutes!!!! I don't know what this doofus was doing but he built up such a log jam of traffic it was ridiculous. With the lots being taken out for construction they are Parking you across the street over by the old Casting Building. Then you have the option of getting on a bus and sitting there until it fills up and then leaves to only sit in traffic for another half hour until it gets you to the Marketplace or you can bring your best walking shoes and walk the 20-25 minute walk it takes to get to the Marketplace. OH, you can walk 10 minutes to the West side and go in there and then try to walk to the Marketplace through the funnel of plywood walls with people jammed in trying to go every which way. Don't even think of venturing into the lots by the Marketplace that are still "functional". When we were leaving we saw almost every aisle full of cars trying to find their way to a spot or just to get out.

I will not be going anywhere near Downtown Disney until every bit of construction is done over there and I would recommend the same to everybody. A trip over there is usually one of the most enjoyable parts of our trip each year, this time it was a nightmare X 10.

I was just there two weeks ago and had no such issues. Yes, there were some cones in the road and there was a little bit of traffic, but we never had a problem finding parking (two trips), ate lunch with no ADR and no wait and had a great time.

Sorry you had to go through all that.

Yep, I have decided just to skip DTD until they are done. (And folks if you are staying at SSR do some research, there's a back way from Lake Buena Vista, do some research and avoid the traffic nightmare :))

I didn't have any of those issues last week either. The only reason parking is so difficult is because they are building a parking garage there right now and a lot of the lot is blocked off.

We have to go on Friday night for a wedding reception at Fulton's. My dad will be in a scooter. Should we drive or ride the bus from our resort? How long should we allow if we ride the bus? Is there still handicapped parking in the Marketplace Lot? I'm starting to get concerned. We were going to ride the boat from POFQ, but they aren't running Friday evening... :scared1:

This was on a Saturday afternoon 2 weeks ago.

We went there last Wednesday. My family wanted to go, and I almost vetoed, since I was driving and was expecting a mess, with no place to park. But, was pleasantly surprised, we got a spot right up front, near T-Rex, and had a fine time shopping (although my wife spent FAR too long in the Christmas store!)

Went there this morning only to find they opened at 10, not 9 like we thought. Has it always been 10? Could have sworn it was a 9 opening.

We went on Friday afternoon, no problems parking, shopping, or with traffic.

Afternoon is a HUGE difference from nighttime, especially weekends
Yes. Absolutely.

You also went on a holiday weekend, during major construction.

If you didn't know about the construction before you went, or if you forgot it was a holiday weekend and would be more crowded, then I can see how the crowds and traffic would have totally thrown you for a loop.

I was there over the weekend as well, at the movies Sat aft and Splitsville Sat eve. No issues. We parked in the back parking lot (behind Cirque) and walked in. Beautiful evening ... nice walk ... no traffic.

:earsboy:

I've never gone on Saturday night because of the crowds. I don't even do Friday nights anymore.

If you go during another weeknight, it will be less crowded. But also with the construction, you will want to use Disney Transportation of some sort to avoid parking disaster.

It's also nice during the daytime unless there is a big event going on.

Ok, we're not driving so riding the disney buses. Do the buses still stop on each end or not during the construction?

they stopped at the Marketplace and Pleasure Island (which I kept calling Paradise Island) when I was there in September.

And yes, Saturday nights are the WORST nights to visit. We landed on Tuesday night and it was very quiet at DTD compared to our Saturday visit the year before.

We were there last Thursday night & it was horrible! Jam packed & the bus lines to get back to the resorts were backed up. We stayed at Fort Wilderness, but got on the Contemporary bus & rode a boat back to the Fort. Otherwise, we would have been there for hours waiting for our resorts bus.

This is all the fault of Fastpass+. Downtown Disney is mobbed with all those people who couldn't get on Toy Story Mania and Test Track with legacy FP. You see how the evil, evil FP+ has ripple effects that will eventually bring about the downfall of WDW?!

Bahaha!!

OP, I feel your pain...we were there on Sept. 20th, a Friday night, and it was AWFUL. Took about 45 minutes to find a parking spot and the stores were mobbed. It was our last night there and we "had" to finish our shopping, or we would have left long before.
