Is That A Crab Leg In Your Pocket? 10 Days of Dining with Pics!

Sorry to hear about your experience, I have had the same crab cake before and the crab portion was fantastic.

Loving your reviews so far!! Some of my most favorite places are Tangieriene Cafe, staring rolls (for a cupcake), and Columbia Harbour House!!!

So sorry about your crab cake fiasco! The waiter should have known right away that ther was bacon in the appetizer!!

Lovely pictures! We have stayed at Kidani and Jambo house with savannah views. I love it there! Sanaa is also one of our favorites!

Thanks so much for your kind words! The crab cake fiasco is ok, ultimately was my fault and glad I know for next time. AKL is amazing. The pictures totally don't do it justice unless you know just how beautiful it is in person. Glad you enjoyed the pictures!

Sorry for the bacon issue. I am wondering, did you have a reservation? If you include your food preferences on the form next time, the chef will always make sure you don't get anything you won't eat. :) They're good with food allergies too.

This is a good idea...it never occurred to me to list our preferences on our reservations. We did have a reservation, but I just feel like getting specific would create too much trouble when I am typically very responsible about my own choices. In a case like this, though, I would have been happier had I listed the preferences, and I'm sure the CM who was our waiter would have been happier, too. Great idea for the future! :cheer2:

It really was yummy, and the sauce was so good, too. It was sweet and tangy. And those crunchy onion bits-what a good idea! I also like the crab cakes at Captain's Grille. They have a nice portion of crab also (I think a bit more, which is also reflected in the price) but they aren't served with the crispy onions.

I have never had a good experience at the Prime Time. Maybe it is what I order or just bad luck. Sorry you had a bad experience too.

It seems like they are really good at some things, but maybe not so good at others. I'd read some negative reviews about the vegetarian spaghetti and "meatballs," so when they removed that from the menu and created the veggie lasagna, we thought that was a good time to try this place. Maybe the vegetarian meals are a work in progress here.

Sorry you have had bad luck there also. Next time, we'll try to get in to sci-fi. Even though the food isn't the fanciest, the ambience is so awesome! We wanted to go there for lunch the day we ended up at 50's, but they were booked solid.

Sounds like we eat a pretty similar diet.
I don't eat meat/meat products but I do eat fish
When I am eating out I generally always select the vegetarian option, especially in Disney where they seem to use bacon/pancetta in just about every fish dish!
It should't be the case but there are still a lot of servers who seem to be really confused if you ask them if a dish is vegetarian, especially if it's a dessert and you aren't sure if it contains gelatin
Oh and the aprons at B&C would have totally grossed me out

We've noticed you eat a very similar diet, because a long time ago, my DP found your dining reviews and we were so excited to see so many of the choices we'd make! I know it's a safer bet to choose the vegetarian option, but it's hard since there is usually one veg option and at least a couple of seafood choices. In general, I like a lot of variety in my diet, and when I'm on vacation, I almost never want the "healthiest" thing on the menu. Since the one veg option is typically also the healthiest choice, I tend to be drawn to things like fried crab cakes with fried crispy onion strings on top. :guilty: And then the drama of bacon/pancetta in my food ensues...

On another note, they put pork in all the clam chowder in WDW, but in DLR, most of the clam chowder served is without meat. For me, this means that each trip to DLR is that much better, since I love clam chowder!

The aprons were gross, but once inside, the actual CMs waiting on the tables had clean clothes. So it wasn't so bad. :rolleyes1

After we relaxed for a bit at our resort, we showered and got ready for dinner. At this point, we were still tired out from our morning at HS, and we didn't want to deal with the convoluted process of taking the bus system from our resort to MK, and then the monorail to the Polynesian. Instead, we decided to take a cab. We went out front of our resort, and the CMs at bell services called us a taxi.

Our taxi arrived in just a few minutes, and within another few minutes, we arrived at the welcome area of the Poly to hear "Aloha." Our taxi ride cost about $15.00.

A nice CM in the lobby area pointed out this hidden Mickey:

This resort is just so beautifully themed. After we checked in upstairs, we spent a few minutes gazing down at the pond and waterfall and just taking it all in:

We were seated very promptly. To start the meal off, I knew I'd want a yummy drink. Our server suggested the pina colava:

Not a lot of arm twisting required here. :rolleyes1

DP and I split this, since I knew I'd be too full to enjoy dinner if I drank this all by myself. This was good. It's basically a pina colada with raspberry syrup. Like a pina colada but even sweeter and yummier.

The fresh raspberries on top were a nice addition.

After we ordered, we were served this loaf of bread with macadamia nut butter:

This bread is still one of the best things about eating at Kona. It is so warm, soft and delicious, and the butter is heavenly. Both are a little on the sweet side. I swear I could eat this for dessert. It's so good. We basically ate the entire loaf, and then our server asked if we wanted another one! We said no thank you, we couldn't possible eat another (but we probably could have).

For my meal, I chose the scallops:

OMG was this a good choice!

These scallops were so delicious, with a nice light sear to them and properly cooked, not over cooked at all.

I loved the seaweed salad and edamame that were served with this dish. The seaweed had the taste of yummy, lightly-flavored greens, and I was very fond of the soft, tender texture of it. I've had other seaweed in the past and found it to be very tough and chewy. The sauce on this was rich and divine, yet the dish still felt light. DP sampled the accompaniments (she doesn't like scallops though) and said she agreed with me. She found it all quite good. The toasted sesame seeds were such a nice touch; they added a nice crunch and saltiness to my meal. The portion size of this was perfect. It felt pretty light overall, so I could eat most of it and not feel stuffed.

DP ordered the noodles with tofu as her protein:

Again, this was a larger portion than the photo shows.

She loved her meal. She thought the flavors were good, and she enjoyed the tofu. In general, she felt the tofu was a little soft; we both prefer our tofu to be at least pan-fried to add a little texture to it. She ate most of this, though, which is saying a lot, especially since the tofu was so soft. I sampled it also, and the flavors were delicious. It was much more flavorful than what we'd had earlier in the week at Yak and Yeti, and it tasted a lot lighter. It wasn't heavy or oily at all, just full of flavor and yummy veggies.

In spite of the fact that we'd devoured an entire loaf of bread, that huge pina colava drink, and basically all of our entrees, we knew we had to try dessert.

Last year, we'd had the pineapple upside down cake, and it was good. This year, we decided to branch out a bit, and we ordered this:

Their version of crème brulee...yum yum!

I don't really remember what it's called, but there is a layer of chocolate on the bottom of the little crème brulee dish, then the traditional crème brulee on top (with a vanilla flavor) and then a banana which is served brulee style on the side.

We both loved this dish. It was heavenly. The light layer of chocolate in the dish was a nice addition, and the flavors went perfectly with the banana, which had a nice crunchy sugary crust to it. We ate every last bit of this.

When we finished, we took the MK monorail over to MK, and then we walked over to the resort busses. Our bus to BC arrived in just a few minutes, and we were back at BC in no time. It really was very simple.

We walked around the Boardwalk and enjoyed the beautiful Orlando sky and the dusk:

We absolutely loved our meal at Kona and can't wait to return. We enjoyed it so much we tried to return for another meal during this trip, but we simply ran out of time. Kona has been elevated to a must-do for us, with two near perfect experiences both times we have been. :cloud9:

This review has made me add Kona to my next trip! I love all the veggie options and I had no idea they would sub tofu! I also like my tofu seared a little.

Thanks for this awesome review!:thumbsup2

We love Kona! They also offer some veggie versions of sushi rolls, so if you like sushi, that gives you something else as a possibility. We had sushi rolls as an appetizer last year, and we enjoyed it, too. I just don't think they have anything that's bad.

This post made me curious - I know that you and DP eat seafood, but do you happen to know if Kona will make "off the menu" veggie rolls? I notice on the AllEars menu (not sure if this is totally up to date) that the only seafood-free sushi is a cucumber roll. I'd be very intrigued if they have more options than what is listed on that site.

Glad to hear that the veggie noodles got favorable reviews!

I don't know if they make "off menu" veggie rolls, but I knew they had some on the menu. I didn't realize it was only one roll. They make all the sushi as you order it, so I'm guessing they will be willing to modify or create a roll for you, especially if you were willing to wait a little longer. The sushi chef stands right in the dining area (off to the side so you can sit at the bar without being in the restaurant or sit right by him while dining in the restaurant), so I would imagine he can do anything you'd like, with some obvious restrictions on what will hold together or fit in a sushi roll. If you end up trying this, you'll have to let me know how it goes. You could also call the restaurant in advance and ask them.

The next morning, we were up early and planned to head over to Epcot to visit Future World before the crowds.

We stopped for a quick breakfast at Beach Club Marketplace. Last year, we found this place to always be a bit of mad house, and the CMs who worked in the food preparation area were lukewarm at best. This year, there was quite an improvement. The structure of the line and ordering process ran more smoothly, and every CM we encountered was warm and helpful and delivered service with that special Disney magic. pixiedust:

We had been mourning the loss of the croissant breakfast sandwich since we heard it was removed from the menu at the Beach Club. As a result, we were forced to get this:

The new version of their breakfast sandwich

This is made with two types of cheese (I can't tell you which types) and scrambled eggs, and you have your choice of bread or croissant. We chose challah bread, which was basically a hearty, white bread. This is served with a side of cheesy breakfast potatoes. It also normally comes with bacon, but we asked for an extra slice of cheese instead, and the CM obliged.

This sandwich was actually quite good, a lot better than it looks! It was cheesy and warm, and the bread was a good choice. (Ever since we had the dried out croissant breakfast sandwich at the Pacific Wharf Café in DCA, we've been scared to order croissant breakfast sandwiches. :sad2: )
With that extra slice of cheese, I thought it was just delicious! DP liked it, too. We split the sandwich, and it was actually plenty for two people.

I could have used an extra helping of these cheesy good potatoes, though! These are shredded hashbrown potatoes (my favorite kind of breakfast potatoes) with cheesy sauce and cheese, then baked into casserole with corn flakes on top. Yum yum yum! I wanted to eat this again before our trip ended; they were that good. 1/2 portion was just not enough.

Splitting this breakfast was enough to hold us over, and we headed over to Epcot and visited a few attractions, including this one:

A close up of the lovely mural:

This ride is one of our favs! But this day, the function where you can see yourself at the end in your new "world" wasn't working. We spoke to a CM hoping to get some sort of pass to be able to return without having to wait in line so we could ride again and see our future, but the CM we spoke to just said, "Oh that happens sometimes." :confused3

It was a hot day, and after reading about it here on the dis, we decided to make our first visit to the Club Cool for some complimentary refreshments!

My favorite was the Veggie Beta from japan:

I thought this was yummy and refreshing, kind of like Gatorade!

DP's favorite was (we think) the Mexico version of Coke:

We sampled all the flavors, and we ended up getting really really full! We felt so bloated from all that carbonation. I don't really recommend drinking all the flavors at once, maybe best to stretch it out over a couple of visits throughout the day. :guilty:

And we both tried the Beverly, and I don't know what's wrong with us, but we really didn't think it was that bad! :thumbsup2

We had a nice morning in Future World, and we were ready to make our way around to WS to visit some countries and stop off for a little lunch along the way!

Oh wow, your dinner at Kona looks delicious

The scallops look wonderful and hey, no bacon :cool1:

Slightly off topic but I like the color of your nail polish :goodvibes

That's my favorite way to eat scallops! :lmao:

:offtopic:

Totally just kidding. ::yes:: Thank you! I had just changed to this color on this particular day. It was my first time using it...it is a new "vacation" color of mine. It might make a reappearance in our coming California trip. :beach: Seems like a beachy color to me.

We finished up in Future World and headed over to World Showcase, starting to the left with Mexico and making our way around to Norway.

I had been waiting to have this snack since last year when I had it for the first (and second) time.

Milk chocolate covered grapes with caramel drizzle

All I can say is :yay: This is a snack item from Karamel Kuche. Forgive me if I butchered that spelling. Last year I discovered it is basically my favorite snack ever.

This year I totally scored-check out my skewer-FIVE grapes!

Normally it is served with just four grapes. I'm sure it's by weight of the fruit, but literally every skewer I have ever seen only has 4 grapes. Today, they only had dark chocolate in the case, so I asked the CM if they had any milk grapes lying around. She said, "I think we have one left," went into the fridge and came out with this:

Okay I know you've already seen it, but it was so good, that's it again. Count them 1-2-3-4-5! Woohoo! I was so happy. This was as delicious as I'd remembered, and it was icy cold since it came directly from the fridge. It was a perfect snack, and I could still let DP eat one and have 4 for myself! :cheer2:

Unlike me, DP decided to branch out, and she ordered this:

Pineapple with milk chocolate and caramel drizzle

This was good, although a bit of a mess, especially since it was in the 90s by now and we were trying to eat and walk so that we (and our chocolate) did not melt in the sun.

She enjoyed this and said she'd get it again, although she admitted it was a mess. I could have seen that coming. :rolleyes1 Another reason I love the grapes...they are so easy to eat, each grape is the perfect bite size, and just the right ratio of fruit to chocolate.

We made our way around the circle to the America Pavilion where we knew we'd be getting one of these:

The jalapeno cream cheese filled pretzel, minus a bite

DP ripped a piece of this off before I could snap the photo. After all, she'd seen what I did to those grapes, so she was probably worried if she didn't snatch a bite right away, I was just going to scarf this whole thing, too. ;)

After I took my first bite, I realized what this was missing. More cheese! So DP headed back to the line (in the sun, in the heat, I am so lucky, I was thinking, as I "saved" our table in the shade), and pretty soon, our lunch/snack looked like this:

As our friends from the UK say...nom nom nom!

I think it is perfectly acceptable to take an item filled with cheese, coated in cheese...and dip it in cheese!

Ok some will argue this little cup with the orange goo is a sad disgrace to actual cheese, but I don't mind it one bit. I loved this little delicious cup of goo, and after the pretzel was gone, I admit I finished it off with a spoon as we walked back to the International Gateway. :rotfl:

As far as the jalapeno pretzel, we'd loved it last year, and we loved it again this year. It was really yummy, with just a mild taste of jalapeno but really no heat to it. I just don't see how I can ever eat a plain salted pretzel again.

After our snacks, we headed back to our resort to clean up and park hop over to MK to catch the Main Street Electrical Parade.

Coming up, dinner from Columbia Harbour House (take two) and the egg roll stand!

YUM! Everything looks so good! Thanks for making this!

You're welcome! And thanks for reading. I'm glad you're enjoying it. :cool1: I'll be doing another update today, and hopefully can get two done. Got to get this thing moving along!

I want those grapes now! My favorite thing at WDW or DL is a Minnie Mouse caramal and chocolate apple...so caramal, chocolate, fruit HAS to be good.

About the Beverly. I made DH and DS try it when we visited World of Coke, and they were made at me. I didn't try it :rotfl2: DH and I had our genes tested through 23 and me, and supposedly, my genes say that I can't taste bitter (DH can). So maybe you and your DP have that same trait where bitter doesn't bother you as much :confused3

We finished up at Epcot and then made a fairly quick decision to make this our night to see the Main Street Electrical Parade at MK. Normally I'm a super planner, and I have every detail of our trip carefully planned out way in advance. This time, though, the plans and details kept changing, just a little here, and just a little there, so that we almost didn't know which way we were going. Since we'd realized we were running out of opportunities to catch the parade and MK fireworks, we decided to head over and just do it. The only problem was that this resulted in a conundrum I said I'd never face again: being in MK at dinner time without a reservation. :confused3 Last year, this is how we ended up at Pinocchio's restaurant in Fantasyland for perhaps the most disappointing meal of the trip. This year, though, I thought I had a plan to combat this issue: we would get dinner from Tortuga Tavern in Adventureland. I'd smelled it earlier in the week at lunch time, and thought it would be delicious. So we headed over to MK with a plan in our minds about where we could get an exciting and new quick service meal at MK that just might hit the spot.

We took the resort bus over, found the MK to be packed, and managed to snap a quick photo of the beautiful castle:

Even though it was over 2 hours before parade time, people were beginning to sit down already. I parked DP on the curb and told her to "wait there" and I made the trek upstream to the very back of Adventureland where I discovered...Tortuga Tavern was closed! Why does MK do this? I swear, some days they just decide to close counter service restaurants willy nilly. Since DP was back on the curb and I was all the way in the way back of Adventureland with no veggie burrito to be had, I had to make an executive decision for us. In desperation, I stopped off at the egg roll stand and grabbed two of these:

A veggie egg roll from the egg roll cart

Here is another shot:

These egg rolls were good, but both of us agreed they didn't really satisfy us. First off, they'd be a lot better if they were served with a little sweet and sour sauce or duck sauce. Secondly, it just didn't feel like dinner, especially since we'd had a somewhat smaller lunch.

Because we knew we'd both enjoy it and really couldn't think of what else to do, DP headed back off to CHH to grab us something to split for our second dinner.

She came back with this:

Fried shrimp with French fries and coleslaw. This was good (again), although in general I'd say it tastes better when you eat it upstairs at CHH.

To spice things up, she also picked up one of these:

The apple crisp

Even though this dessert doesn't look too appetizing, I'd read time and again on the dis just how much better it tastes than looks. I was really glad to finally get a chance to try it and give my opinion. Unlike the wontons, with this dessert, I totally agree with most other reviewers. This dessert was pretty yummy. It had a nice apple pie filling which was tasty and sweet, and the crust was moist and flaky on top. A scoop of vanilla ice cream would really elevate this dessert.

While our dinners were not too exciting, they were filling and tasty. After our rears went entirely numb, it was finally time to get the show on the road. We enjoyed a little pre-parade entertainment:

You can see we had a marvelous front row seat, and when the Main Street Electrical Parade finally passed, we really felt all the sitting and waiting was worth it.

Coming up next, a snack from Beach Club Marketplace.
