Bed bugs

I'm going to disney for the first time in September. Has anyone ever had issues with bed bugs? We are staying at pop and I've read online a Lot of stories of people seeing them

Here is the thing. Any hotel can have bed bugs in any room on any given day. A responsible entity like Disney will take care of the problem when they become aware of it. So what any traveler needs to do is be aware when they check into a room and look for any signs of problems before settling in.

Most people that posted either brought them with them or wanted something to complain about.

You do know there are crocodiles in Disney, right? There is something to worry about.

I disagree with this. People complain about bedbugs because they are a nuisance. This doesn't somehow mean they brought them or they are just whiners.

That said, bedbugs can travel into your luggage on the airplane or ME as well as being present in a room you are checking into. You can't avoid them by looking for complaints about a hotel having them. The best advice is to always do a thorough check when first entering your room. Also keep your luggage on a stand, not the bed.

When I look at reviews I focus on how the hotel deals with finding out they have an infestation and Disney's policy regarding bedbugs is quite possibly one of the best in the country. Most hotels and other venues will see them at some point in time, it's how they deal with it that really matters.

If you want to really freak out, bedbugs could even be present in some of the attractions and rides.

I've never experienced bed bugs at Disney. They can pop up anywhere. But from what I have read, when Disney is informed of bed bugs, they take action right away. I've read that once it's be confirmed, they take your belongings & have them cleaned, sometimes giving you a certificate for an outfit per person to wear for the day, move you to another room, & they completely clean & get rid of the bugs from the room. So I wouldn't worry about it. When you get there take the normal steps you would at any hotel. Check all around for signs of bed bugs before unpacking. It'll be fine. Have a magical trip!

I've stayed at Pop several times and have never had an issue. DBF and I are travelers and live in NYC so we always go through our bedbug check list as soon as we walk in the door.

You want to check the seams of the mattress, in the side tables, and then check all the drawers and doors of the cabinets.

Even with a thorough check there is no guarantee your room won't have them.

Also unless you see the bug it is almost impossible to know if the bites you get are bedbug bites. Mosquito bites and bedbug bites look exactly the same except bed bug bites typically have a pattern of 3 in a row. Guess what though, I visited family in Tx and even with a thorough inspect I woke up with the signs of bedbugs. I check everything again and even took further action to protect myself. Well that night we found about 15 Mosquitos in the room I was staying in. Multiple Mosquitos can cause the line of multiple bites and in my case that is exactly what happened

Also as a note most people who get bitten by bed bugs don't even know. You have to have an allergic reaction from the bite for it to itch etc.

Good plan! Thats what I do these days, leave my luggage with my daughter outside the room, and go in to check for bedbugs. Sad that it is so prevalent it seems. They can infest luggage at airports where they are piled up together, and are so easily spread. Before I fly for this trip, Im going to look for plastic ziplock luggage protectors I've been reading about. Haven't seen them yet.

As mentioned, they can be at any rank hotel from 1 star to 5 stars.

I do think Disney deals with them well and quickly. Have a great trip.

The above poster made a great point. Anything can go wrong, wherever you are. But, the customer service at Disney is among the very best. Thats why we keep going back. I would not keep going back to the Parks if the Resorts did not have such great service.

This is so true. I remember hearing of a movie theater in our town having to close for a few days to treat a bed bug problem.

I've seen a few posters on here talk about Disney having the dogs that sniff out bed bugs and constantly walking them through the resort rooms. So they're definitely on top of prevention.

LOL, on a side note...one year we were there when the love bugs were in full swing. My daughter and Mom stayed on the ground level at POP and hubby and I were on the 3rd floor. Well those love bugs loved my Mom and daughter's room....Disney was so quick at "evacuating" those bugs...we ate dinner at the food court and boom they were gone. I love Disney!

Bottom line?? Any hotel or resort is capable of having bedbugs. With so many people traveling around the world now,, and the US not being able to use powerful and effective pesticides, bedbugs are more common than ever before. BUT...the vast majority of people posting on the internet about their resort stays are posting about negative experiences. Very few people come home from wonderful trips and go online and write up reviews. So yes, you are going to see a lot of not so positive reviews.
I have stayed at WDW resorts over 30 times since '99. I have stayed at almost every resort. I have never ever seen a bedbug..or been bitten by one. My dd's camp?? Whole different story. They had bedbug issues two different years.
Now, I have seen alligators!!!! That's something to be concerned about it.

Do you just do a loose one or two, or toss in a box?

You put the dryer sheet in a thin sandwich bag. We put about 2-3 in each suitcase.

We also put all of our clothes in big ziplock bags. In case of rain your clothes won't get soaked.

Disney does a far better job of handling and preventing bed bugs than other hotels you might stay at. But I do understand your concern! Bottom line, travelling anywhere is a cause of concern on the bedbug front.

A previous poster gave tips on how to look for signs of them and I always do that.

I have stayed at Pop and many other Disney resorts and never seen any sign of them.

And yes I have seen alligators, a few snakes, love bugs and Lord knows what else but I keep going back and those critters are still not that common for me to see in my roughly 20 trips to WDW!
