When did it become a rule to give nearest kid caught foul ball?

Those are the same videos Thumper man posted that Luvmy3 was responding too (and that I, and others also responded to and still do not see this as the couple catching the ball doing ANY thing wrong).

They video was being shown on the big screen in the stadium, those people knew what happened, saw the little boy crying, and were laughing about it. Although I'm a Yankee fan I usually don't care for Michael Kay but in this instance, he's right on target.

Again, this my opinion; the woman holding up the ball and posing for a picture is rubbing it in. Can't tell me they didn't know the little boy was crying.

Well there you go, that is why there will always be an expected rule that a crying child gets what they want.

Only if the target is 100 feet wide. The two adults did nothing wrong.

Actually I though just smiling and not make a fuss when the mean announcement was made was pretty graceful. I probably would have been so upset that I would have walked out in tears.
As a mother, among other things, I would not have given the ball to the child because I would be very angry if someone gave my child the idea that crying gets your way and I would not want to do that to the parents of the boy.

Again, I would have reacted the same way, why because my face was on the big screen. Maybe some think she should have remained still with a stoic face, or maybe some think she should have held her head in shame?
She caught her ball, she was happy about it, she was laughing and smiling and talking to some of the people around her despite what MK said. Good for her.

I think it's just a baseball and the kid and parents can get over it. I've caught a few foul balls and gotten them from players in my time... Sure it's exciting when it happens...but a few hours later youre over it and it's not a big deal.

I'm nearly 40 and never caught a foul ball....if I end up with one like these people did...I'd keep it too.

There's no rule that says they have to. Obviously, they were allowed to keep the ball. But there is also no rule that says we can't think them a couple of jerks for not doing it and then flaunting it in front of the kid either.

Thank you.

I was watching that game last night, and while I thought they were more than entitled to keep the ball, they were being a couple of twits for not just giving it to the kid.

They did catch it, fair and square. Not disputing that. And it certainly didn't look like the parents were trying to make a fuss over it at all, they were trying to calm him down and tell him the same thing - finders keepers. There was no arguing in the stands or anything, it was Michael Kay making a fuss about it on the air.

But for god's sake...give the kid the ball. I love baseball. I've never caught a foul ball, but I'd love to someday.

But if it's between me and a pre-schooler for a random foul ball, I'm just gonna give it to the pre-schooler.

No, they didn't have to give him the ball. But it would have just been a nice thing to do.

Maybe they have a kid at home or a niece/nephew they want to give it to.

The fans could see the reaction on the big screen, but I doubt they heard what Michael Kay said, since he's the NY Yankee announcer and that game was in Texas.

Oh good. I am glad of that. I thought it was announced in the stands (I have had to watch the videos without sound).

Yes and you don't normally hear commentary at the game. And even if you did, it would hopefully be from the guys doing the radio play by play. Prereq for television commentating is not knowing your butt from your elbow.

They knew exactly what was going on, they were watching it on the stadium big screen.

It was on tv, the YES network.

The parents didn't look angry at all, and they certainly didn't look like they were insisting that the kid should have the ball. They were even laughing at the fuss he was making. Even after he got another ball they looked like they were all getting along fine about the whole thing.

It's just a nice thing to do. They certainly didn't have to, and if they had their reasons for keeping it, that's fine too, the kid will get over it.

I wouldn't have a problem handing a random foul ball over to a crying kid if there was no real reason for me to have it. Again, it just seems like a nice thing to do.

I never said give the kid the ball. Just saying don't rub it in when you know that's the main reason the kid is crying. Me personally, I would've given it to the kid. So we'll just agree to disagree. I'm done here.

Yep, that's where I saw it last night. Honestly, when I first saw them I thought they were all together because no one was fighting with each other over the thing and the parents were chuckling at the kid's hysterics over the ball.

Then it did look like the couple was just ignoring the crying kid, which seemed kinda cold...but the replay showed that they had caught it fair and square, they hadn't stolen it away from the kid or anything.

All I was thinking watching it was that I probably would have taken a quick picture with it and given it to the kid. It's just not that big a deal and it would have made him happy - which would have made me happy too.

By the next inning they had given the kid another ball, so now everyone had a ball and they were all having a laugh over it. It really wasn't that big of a deal.

You do realize what gets broadcast isn't always what's on the stadium screen, right?

And the TV announcers were just that... on the TV. No one in the stands heard a word those commentators said during the game.

You didn't have to. Its pretty clear you don't have a high opinion of what this woman did (and by did, I mean acting happy she caught the ball, in front of a crying child).
