When did it become a rule to give nearest kid caught foul ball?

Doesn't necessarily mean he can't catch. Most people that go to the games don't take a glove to catch foul balls. Trying to catch a ball coming at you pretty fast, with your bare hands, is not easy. I've seen balls come at people as they were coming down the stairs with food and drinks in their hands. Can't really catch a ball that way now can you. DW got hit with a ball one time. Took a hop off the base and redirected right towards her. She got her arm up in time, but it got sprained in the process. You just never know. And for the record, she didn't get the ball, but I felt she should have.

Right. All those things you said. But the point I was making was: if the kid didn't deserve the ball he didn't catch, then neither does this adult deserve the ball he didn't catch. The same pity the OP shows to the unskilled adult should likewise be shown to the 2 year old who's being 2. If it were me, I'd give the ball to the child and the guy who took it in the face. Not because I have to, or because there's a rule.

I would keep it.

I've been to quite a few ballgames as a kid and NEVER got to catch the ball. Wait your turn, kid.

I don't think the couple looks like they are rubbing it in. She shows it briefly to her husband and the people behind her--it is not like she waved it in front of the kid or anything.

It looks like the parents were trying to calm the kid down and not asking for anything. It also looks very possible that the boy was more scared by the jumping around his dad did trying to catch the ball while holding him than upset by not getting the ball (though either way I do not see why anyone should have to give him the ball).

I think the announcer was a jerk to say that and that the couple who had the ball did nothing wrong.

Watch this video and them give us your thoughts. To me the older couple was rubbing it in. It looks to me that you can see them looking at the little boy as they're taking pictures.

What???? I said I would have shown pity to the guy who took it in the face and would have given the ball to him.

But you just go ahead and give anyone cries what they want.

You take your kid to the store. He sees something he wants. You don't get it for him and he starts crying. I guess those who say the couple should have given the ball to the kid would give the kid a toy?

Sorry kid, them's the breaks.

And no, the woman was NOT "rubbing it in". She showed the ball to the people behind her, then she held up the ball so her companion could take a picture of it. Since the companion was between her and the kid, she HAD to look that direction.

What if the couple with the ball are season ticket holders, attend 15+ games a year for the last 10 years and never got a ball? Would that make them "deserving" enough to keep the ball?

I do not see the camera aimed nearly low enough to photograph the child. Looks to me like they are trying to get a photo of the player who threw the ball :confused3

I also notice the mother of the little boy is sitting back and looking rather unhappy when he gets the ball in the second clip. I couldn't help but wonder if she was a little annoyed that her son was basically just taught that if you cry you get what you want :rolleyes1 :rotfl: I mean she really does not look thrilled at all in that second "kid gets the ball" video.

We don't disagree about the smashed face guy. I re-read my post and it doesn't mischaracterize what you said. I'm just equating the kid and the smashed face guy. I would pity them both. You have a different view. That's fine.

It it were my kid who was crying because he/she didn't catch the ball, I would tell him "Sorry Kid, them's the breaks." But like I said if I saw that little boy crying I would be the sucker that would give it to him.

I think we're all looking at the same videos. People have different interpretations. Even so, I think we all agree that it's important that the child learn not to act like those adults.

I'm stealing someone else comment:
Two emerging ideas from everyone's comments.
1) the kid in the video needs to learn that you can't get everything you want
2) even though its yours, fair and square, it doesnt hurt to be nice to those less fortunate....
two important lessons that, unfortunately, can't be taught simultaneously in this situation.

Again, this my opinion; the woman holding up the ball and posing for a picture is rubbing it in. Can't tell me they didn't know the little boy was crying.

I don;t agree with that. I don't think the two adults did anything wrong.
To me, the worst adult in the scenario is a tie between the dad who comes very near to smashing his kids' head into a seat while trying to get the ball with his kid in his arms and the announcer who was just plain rude.

Most kids would appreciate being able to sit that close to the field.

Yes, really. I don't see her actions as rubbing it in his face. I see a woman happy about catching a ball, and showing it to the other fans, and getting her picture taken. I would bet money that she would have re-acted the exact same way if that little boy was not sitting next to her crying, or sitting next to her at all. Even if she looked at him, I don't see it as done maliciously. He was crying, I would have looked at him to if he wasn't stopping.
