How I Survived 11 Days at WDW with a Disney-Resistant Husband **2/20 THE END **

Hi Trish,
Just read your last full day spent at the Poly! I love your pictures! We are hoping to go back there this October. Sorry your last night was not everything you planned :sad2: and your DH blew off Spectromagic and Wishes. I'm glad you were able to enjoy it with the kids at least. Those breakfast pics from Kona look great too! I love breakfast there. Sorry no one remembered Mother's Day. Maybe the days got away from them being in Disney. I know I wouldn't be too happy about it though. Glad you were able to squeeze in one last swim before checking out of the Poly.

You made me cry again! I just felt the pain you must have felt that day....and then when you said it was Mother's Day I'm pretty sure I went straight to the ugly cry!

:rotfl:

So when are you going in Oct.? I am kind of thinking of a short Oct. trip. I would love to FINALLY see the MNSSHP. We are DVC members but I want to save points. Thankfully we can stay at Shades of Green which is close to Poly. :) Do you have a resort picked out?

October is a wonderful time to be at WDW. I have been in Oct three times now, and looking forward to trip number 4! Our locations are somewhat up in the air, but I hope to have everything straightened out shortly. Trying to coordinate both RCI and DVC trades.

Hi Trish,

I've been AWAL from your TR for a while but I'm back now! Did tons of catching up and my heart is aching for you... I truly believe you need to leave DH at home from now on and just go with your kids (maybe only 1 at a time while they are still young ;)).

Are you and Katie still taking riding lessons during the winter or are you on break till the spring?? Is she cantering yet or still just trotting?

I can't remember exactly when I posted last but we went crazy this year and went to WDW twice... Once at the end of September for MNSSHP and once in mid December for MVMCP! I have to tell you that I had never been there during the holiday season and it was simply breathtaking! Although it was cold, I absolutely loved it.

Also, a bit of good news for me... My mother, who had always been very critical of all our trips to Disney and who loved to remind us how she felt we were just wasting our money going there all the time and that once should be enough.... Finally agreed to take a trip with us and accompanied us in December... Well, she is now completely converted and was talking about "the next time" even before we left!!! She even made us add 2 extra days when we were there because she didn't want to leave. So I am thrilled to announce that there is one less Disney resister in the world!!! Unfortunately, I don't think there is much hope when it comes to your DH though...

Anyway, looking forward to the next update and I have my fingers and toes crossed hoping DH made it up to you big time for forgetting mother's day... :snooty:

Great to hear from you again. And so excited to hear not only about your trip, but your success in converting your mother! Way to go!

Katie and I are still riding every Saturday. It is probably the time I most look forward to all week. I love that we are sharing a passion together each and every week. It is also such a treat that for once instead of driving the kiddos to dance, hockey, swimming, paddling or skating, I am actually participating.:goodvibes

We haven't yet started cantering, but Katie keeps asking. She is anxious to canter and start jumping.:scared1:

I'm looking forward to hearing about your House Of Blues Brunch but I really felt so bad for you about your last morning experience. My heart broke for you that your family forgot it was Mother's Day:sad1: I sure hope Chris makes up for it on your next Disney trip!:thumbsup2

House of Blues was great. I will have the whole update this weekend. The person who thought up that House of Blues Mothers Day brunch idea was so smart!!!:rotfl:

Oh Trish, I was seriously aching for you while reading that update

I'm glad you decided to try and push all that aside and enjoy your last day, hopefully the rest of it was better than it started.

Yes, it was. Afterall, things could only go up from that, right?;)

Well Pooh- forgetting Mother's Day would have put me over the edge!! I just mentally slapped your DH and I am not a violent person!:lmao:

I truly hope your last day turns around. I agree that you should take the kids by yourself or bring another family member- maybe your Mom?

God help me, but I have already invited Chris along for another trip.

Ugh, I can't believe everyone forgot it was Mother's Day. :( At least those pineapple pancakes were there to help ease some of the pain.

A morning at the pool sounds like a lovely way to spend a couple of hours on your last day at Disney. Hope the Gospel brunch was good -- looking forward to reading all about it.

Mmmm....those macadamia nut, pineapple pancakes!!!! Aren't they the best??!!! I can't be upset about anything with those on my plate!;)

So sad that they all forgot Mother's Day:hug: I'm glad you got to eat the Big Kahuna though!

Thanks!

Hello! :) I know I am really late joining in here, but I just found your TR. I am all caught up though! I have really enjoyed reading along and I can sympathize with you to some degree on a lot of things. Although my DH likes Disney much more than yours, he still isn't as nutty over it as I am. Although, after two trips, I think he has become more fond of it than he wants to let on. But if it is any consolation, I think that is pretty normal. I can only think of a few women here on the DIS that have husbands who love Disney as much as they do. I think more than anything, it is probably male ego that keeps them from just whole heartedly getting into the Disney spirit. I mean, it might be the happiest place on earth, but it isn't the most masculine place on earth!:rotfl: But whether he admits it or not, I know that some of the magical moments we have had on our trips really got to my DH and those memories mean a lot to him, so I won't complain too much.

I've really enjoyed all the resort pictures too! Looking forward to the the last details of the trip. Wish I had found you sooner!

Hi Rinky! I actually gave you a special mention in the report quite a ways back for giving me the idea for the stagecoach pendant. :goodvibes Did you catch that?

So glad that you joined me here!:welcome: And I really, really appreciate your comments!

I can just feel the sadness of your morning. You are a better woman than I, there may have been slamming involved during packing had that been my last evening with the added insult of a forgotten mothers day.

My family forgot my birthday once and I have to say, they'll never forget how much that hurt me. I could care less about presents, but I do expect manners, respect and remembrance, and a big "happy birthday" and a hug first thing in the morning. Not in the middle of the day, not at dinner, not when someone else says it and they clue in. Same thing applies to mothers day.

I applaud you for sucking it up, I agree, no sense in letting it get even worse but...do (did) they know how much that all hurt? Honestly, they should. I know my DH and the E's are CLUELESS unless I actually tell them, the non verbal cues are just lost and I know for me, I can't expect change unless I alert them and pretty bluntly. I was pretty harsh with them the year they forgot and well...they certainly haven't forgotten since! :rotfl: But honestly, there is nothing worse than getting up on what should be a special day and everyone just their own world ignoring you.

I get not being as "into" it as we are, absolutely. And no, not everyone can or wants to be the family in the Disney commercial. But there are ways to do that without actually being rude..or selfish...or extra understanding the next morning and offering up some extra needed TLC which you definitely should have gotten.

So, it's a bit late but, :grouphug: seriously I hope Chris bought you a big fat D&B at DTD after brunch for all this. :rotfl:

Thanks Cynthia! I really don't want to make more of it than what it was, but I do admit it hurt. And it was probably worse hot on the heels of the disappointment the night before.:sad1: However, I moved on pretty quickly starting with the great breakfast, followed by some pool time.:goodvibes

Waking up the next morning after having a tough night is hard. You feel sad and gritty. I'm glad you were showered with kisses and hugs after the family was reminded that it was Mother's Day. I'm also glad you decided to make it a good day. :thumbsup2 Some days, I need to make that decision for myself. Can't wait to read more!

Thank you!:)

I'm sorry that your last night was so disappointing. I totally feel for you! Ivelearned to scaled back my plans to keep DH happy on our trips. It's hard when we want something different!

Amanda

OH gosh....that was really heartbreaking to read! I'm so sorry for your sadness and forgetfulness of your family....I'm blaming your husband for that one! Just let him know he really needs to help the kids make it up to you this year!!:thumbsup2

Thank you!

I can't believe your family forgot Mother's Day.
It is so hard when someone doesn't get the Disney magic.
I think it's great that you were able to still maintain a positive attitude.

Thanks!:)

Ugh what an awful way to start your last day at WDW, especially with it being mother's day.

Hopefully you guys had a good time at downtown disney before having to head home:goodvibes

Yes - our brunch at HOB was wonderful! Great way to end the trip!:goodvibes

Just finished reading through your report - you are a wonderful and brave writer! Unfortunately I can relate a little too closely - non-enthusiastic vacationing husband (extends beyond Disney for my dh and I am passionate about travel!), ignoring Mother's Day (his reason ' You're not my mother'), going off and doing his own thing or not participating in what the kids and I are doing etc. I don't blame your kids though for not being on top of it - they are young and probably had their days scrambled while on vacation.

Thanks for posting and Welcome!:welcome:

I am sure the fact that we had been living in hotels for 10 days without much access to computers, calendars, ect explains why mothers' day might have been overlooked by my family. Plus, I really do get paid back throughout the year by these 3 pretty incredible people I am lucky enough to live with.:goodvibes

You're a better mum than me. I would have sat there, stewed :headache: over breakfast and then decided to have an absolute grudge-holding day.....:sad2:

Kudos to you for choosing to turn the other way.

Happy Mother's Day!!

Once again - self interest. Didn't want to spend my last precious hours at WDW stewing or upset. ;)

Plus....despite the greatest of intentions, I dare anyone to leave the House of Blues Gospel Brunch in a bad mood.:goodvibes

OH dear, that was heartbreaking to read! Happy Mother's Day a million times over - I'm sure that was just icing on the cake that no one remembered.

Glad you decided to make it a good day though. :flower3: :flower3:

Sara

Thanks Sara.

Oh no! I'm so sorry that your last day turned out less than magical. And after all your planning too. That must have been hard to move past but I'm so glad you did. Wishes is one of my absolute favorite things at Disney, I love watching and it never gets old. So I can only imagine how frustrating that night was for you, with Chris back in the room and chatty kids on the beach! But I would've done the same thing, taken my purse and headed out to the beach to finish soaking up Disney.:goodvibes I too love the sounds of the MK slowing down, the ferry boat's horns and rush of the monorails.:thumbsup2

Ohana is one of my favorite restaurants! We ate there for dinner twice this past trip, it's delicious!:thumbsup2 I'm so sorry that Declan had an accident while there. Thank goodness it wasn't anything serious with his eye, that would've been awful! I agree that the manager seemed more concerned with his forms and covering his own butt rather than soothing him at all.:headache:

Good for you though that you took Katie and Declan to the MK anyway, despite your resistant husband.:thumbsup2 He doesn't know what he's missing! It's a shame he can't put more effort into something you're obviously so passionate about though. I hope I'm not out of line saying that. But I wouldn't give up hope, he may come around. Is there any one particular thing at Disney that he really enjoys alot? Like a restaurant or ride or something? Or maybe one of those fishing excursions or sea raycer things??

I really, really hope things turn around Trish! Disney is a magical place and there's always hope that it will become that way for Chris!:goodvibes At the very least, you know that your kids love going though and you're creating special memories for them while there.

You are so right...Wishes is fantastic, and hanging out on the beach at the Poly late at night is one of my absolute favourite things to do.

As for Chris...while he likes certain aspects of a WDW vacation, I have pretty much resigned myself to the fact that he will likely never be one of the ones who just "gets it". I have male friends who count down the days until their WDW vacations, and think and dream of Disney to get them through their stressful days at work. That will probably never be Chris.:rotfl:

I can't control whether he "gets it" or not, just like I can't control the fact that I so clearly love it.

Oh man. The rough night continued into the morning. I'm glad you chose to push it all aside and enjoy the last day though--and I have to agree with you, hard to be sad and upset when you have the Big Kahuna in front of you and Kona coffee! :goodvibes I hope the day greatly improves!!

Thank you!

Thanks!:goodvibes

Hi Trish,
Just read your last full day spent at the Poly! I love your pictures! We are hoping to go back there this October. Sorry your last night was not everything you planned :sad2: and your DH blew off Spectromagic and Wishes. I'm glad you were able to enjoy it with the kids at least. Hey Nichole! Great to hear from you again, and thanks for posting! :goodvibes

Do you have any trips on the horizon? I am so looking forward to your next trip report!:)

I'm sorry that your last night was so disappointing. I totally feel for you! Ivelearned to scaled back my plans to keep DH happy on our trips. It's hard when we want something different!

Amanda

Thanks Amanda! Wise words. But scaling back plans is definitely a challenging proposition, isn't it?

I am sorry the next morning was not so good as well. I am impressed at your ability to move on from the painful episodes and enjoy your time. I also appreciate your candor about your experiences.

I sent you a pm about customs:)

God help me, but I have already invited Chris along for another trip.

:lmao:

Well, at least now you will go into the trip with different expectations. You KNOW he's not got to want a lot of park time, ie standing in line and dealing with crowds, so you can plan your trip accordingly :thumbsup2

So glad you got out of your funk and were able to enjoy your last morning. That's tough when you really want someone to enjoy the world and they just don't get it. We took friends like that last May. Don't get me wrong - they had a good time, probably a really good time, but I could tell the magic just wasn't there for them and it made me sad at the end of my trip.

Anxious to hear about the Gospel Brunch.

This is NUTTY! I started following this thread like back in May or June MONTHS before I went to Disney last year. Every year I get back from Disney I kind of lose interest in DISboards until this time of year. That's when I remembered this thread and how I wanted to see how things turned out! And I can't believe I still have to wait! :lmao:

It's such a cliffhanger. All these months and the story still continues. I am anxiously awaiting the conclusion. I hope it's a happier ending than what is expected :confused3

Also, your trip could have been so awesome but not everyone shares the love of Disney like us DISers. I have had to deal with that myself. It's a shame. But I remember you had a second chance at an unexpected Disney trip after this one. Did you go on that yet? How did that go?

Please finish this thread up SOON! We all want to know what happens!

God help me, but I have already invited Chris along for another trip.

:lmao::laughing:Maybe it's time for a mother/daughter/son trip then!:laughing:

We listened to Wishes on our drive home, it was so sad!:sad1: It is fantastic and the Poly beach is incredible.:thumbsup2 I love the tropical feel of it, and of course the Pina Colada in my hand helps with that too!

Sigh, I'm so sorry for you Trish. I remember the trip I wanted to take the very 1st time with my DH and 3 girls...It was 2008 and I kept asking DH when he wanted to go. He wasn't into it at all, not at all. I was so disappointed because I knew we'd have an amazing time and his less than magical attitude really annoyed me! Luckily he's come around but he's still not as excited as I am when we go, for me it is a very different experience. I plan what I think to be some of the most wonderful things to do and he likes them but doesn't love them. I know that's not the same as Chris but I wouldn't mind if DH was a bit more enthusiastic!

I hope your October trip planning is coming along! Please let us know when you start that PTR!:goodvibes I'm trying to convince DH for an Oct. trip myself, I love all the Halloween decorations and the MNSSHP. Wish me luck!:goodvibes

Oy, what a rotten morning!I'm so glad that you managed to pull yourself up out of that...it couldn't've been easy!

I am sorry the next morning was not so good as well. I am impressed at your ability to move on from the painful episodes and enjoy your time. I also appreciate your candor about your experiences.

Thanks Mary! Will PM you!:)

:lmao:

Well, at least now you will go into the trip with different expectations. You KNOW he's not got to want a lot of park time, ie standing in line and dealing with crowds, so you can plan your trip accordingly :thumbsup2

You are right Michelle! I will definitely have more realistic expectations on future trips. And if we don't spend every minute of every day together that is fine too.:)

So glad you got out of your funk and were able to enjoy your last morning. That's tough when you really want someone to enjoy the world and they just don't get it. We took friends like that last May. Anxious to hear about the Gospel Brunch.

It's hard to understand how or why people don't "get" Disney, isn't it? They just don't know what they are missing.:)

Ok...I confess. I have been stringing this out just to annoy you.:rotfl2:

Seriously, I have always thought I had been doing pretty good with updating. I have over 40 entries in my report. With the exception of a couple weeks leading up to Christmas, I have pretty well been updating once or twice a week. That is all I ever expected to be able to do. I can't apologize if others feel my updates aren't frequent enough.:sad2:

As for the cliffhanger, there actually isn't any. By this point, all the beans are spilled. The only thing left to report on is our brunch at HOB, which I already advised was great. Then we go home.

And yes, my October trip was great, but very, very short. The highlights included spending time again with Carrie (lurkyloo) and Patrick, and Christine (2xcited2sleep), seeing Howard Jones (who I LOVE) and dancing at his concert, sitting beside Deb Wills at said concert, meeting Disney archivist Dave Smith and attending his retirement dinner, and spending time poolside at SAB with Christine.:goodvibes

:lmao::laughing:Maybe it's time for a mother/daughter/son trip then!:laughing:

You are right...after our upcoming October trip, there may well be a trip with just me and the kids. ;)

Good luck in trying to organize your October trip. It is such a great time to go. The Halloween decorations are great, and MNSSHP is fantastic. I have already attended 3 times, and can't wait to get back.:goodvibes

Oy, what a rotten morning!I'm so glad that you managed to pull yourself up out of that...it couldn't've been easy!

Actually, it wasn't too hard at all. Sunshine, macadamia nut pancakes, and a volcano pool with a view of the Castle are excellent remedies for any bad mood.;)

My DH is not the Disney lover that I am, but at this point I don't care. He does find a few things that he likes & at least I get to come to Disney now & then. If he doesn't have fun that's entirely his fault & I don't let it bother me.

In spite of the bad things, it sounds like there were many more good things. , especially those two attractive youngsters!:lovestruc

Wow...this just completely sums it up for me as well. That is also exactly where I am at.;)

You are right about that as well!:thumbsup2

Downtown Disney and House of Blues Gospel Brunch

After we checked out of the Polynesian, we got in the car and headed over to Downtown Disney.

While we didn't have much time, we made a quick stop at the Lego store for the kids, ducked our heads into the T-Rex Cafe just to see it (I was impressed), stopped briefly to check out the Irish merchandise at Raglan Road, and then made a beeline for Ridemakerz.

I had promised the kids the whole trip that we would allow them to make remote control cars, and had even printed off $5 off coupons for our purchases before we left home. Unfortunately, we were packed to the gills, and Chris was adament that there was no way that we could bring anything else home with us as we were likely over our weight limits on the luggage and were also already pushing it with our carry-on allocations. Fortunately the kids took it completely in stride and were in full agreement with just going to look and check things out.

(Continued from last post)

Pretty soon it was getting close to our check-in time for the Gospel Brunch, so we headed over there.

IMG_6233.jpg

IMG_6216.jpg

What I hadn't anticipated was the long line that we had to wait in before getting inside. Once again, another line in the hot sun. At least we had some beautiful scenery to look at.

IMG_6234.jpg

While in line we started chatting with a couple different families. Turns out everyone we met that morning was a local. I expect at least for Mother's Day, this is a popular option. Fortunately, the long wait gave me a chance to make a quick call home to my own Mom to wish her a happy mother's day.

This was the last photo I took of the kids standing outside the theatre doors. No photography was allowed inside the venue.

IMG_6235.jpg

When we were planning our trip, I was hoping that Epcot would bring back their popular Mother's Day brunch which had been done for years to really great reviews. In 2007 we missed Mother's Day by one day, and then in 2008 they stopped it. Unfortunately, they have yet to bring back this popular brunch. However, new this year they started a Tables in Wonderland Brunch option for Mother's Day at the Living Seas Salon. I was tempted, but once the prices were released ($95 per person...yes, even for children!:scared1:) it became a complete non-starter.

At that point, I decided to book the Gospel Brunch. I was going to find a way to fit this into the trip regardless, and once the Epcot Mother's Day Brunch was ruled out, this quickly slid into the schedule. I made a couple of great planning choices this trip, and this Brunch was definitely one of them. I was even more happy with my choice after hearing Pete Werner's scathing review of the TIW Epcot Brunch, which included, (quite shockingly given the amount charged for the Brunch), an infomercial for Guerlain perfume. (Incidentially, I subsequently came to have to sit through what was probably a variation of the same infomercial during the D23 Sip N Stroll festivities in October. Once again the logic of including this in a paid hard ticketed event completely escapes me. :confused3 Christine (2xcited2sleep) and I just about split a gut on this one, looking around at what, for the most part, was obviously not Guerlain's target audience!:rotfl:)

Fortunately I had booked our tickets for the Gospel Brunch well in advance and we ended up having probably the 2nd best table in the venue. (You are assigned seats for this performance based on when you purchase your tickets, so fortunately our place at the back of the line to get into the theatre didn't affect our seats).

As soon as we got into the theatre everyone started making a beeline to the various food stations. There was an omlette station, a juice station, and 2 or 3 different food buffets. The food was absolutely outstanding. Worth the cost of admission in and of itself. Completely delicious. And unlimited.

In my haste to get a good spot in the omlette line, I realized that neither of the kids had followed me and Chris was left to tend to them himself. Oops. Somehow he managed to get both kids juice at the juice station, and then make it through one of the buffet lines with both kids, and still ended up beating me back to the table.

We were seated at a large table with 6 other people who were all living in Orlando, but were originally from up north. Some of their relatives were actually performing that day. It was nice chatting with them throughout the meal.

Finally, after everyone was given sufficient time to make a number of trips to the various food stations, the entertainment began. Things started strong with a powerful and moving opening number. Everybody was on their feet dancing and clapping to the beat. It was great fun, and a perfect way to end our trip. We walked out happy and praising the lord.

After leaving Downtown Disney, we headed back to the Polynesian. Chris dropped me and the kids off at the Great Ceremonial House to wait for our Magical Express bus, and then took off to the airport to return our puny mid-size rental car which would not have been able to hold all of our luggage.

As we were waiting outside on a bench for the bus, I took the opportunity to call Disney reservations and book a bounceback offer. I really had no idea at the time if I would use the reservation, but I always like to do this, just in case to preserve the excellent room rate. Disney always lets you switch your dates around later if need be.;)

Finally our bus arrived and we climbed on board for the torturous ride back to the airport. Just as we were getting settled, the sun streaming in from the window happened to catch my watch and started reflecting fast-moving reflected light onto Declan. Of course, Declan had no idea where it was coming from and started yelling "Katie, Katie...Look!" She couldn't figure it out either, and it actually took me a second or two to realize what he was referring to. Then, in that very second, I had the presence of mind to say: "It's Tinkerbell. She is wishing you both a safe trip home". Declan just beamed. As did Katie.

I immediately turned around in my seat and snapped this picture of the two of them:

IMG_6237.jpg

To this day, it is one of my favorites.

The plane ride home was fairly uneventful. Fortunately it was a direct flight, and the kids slept for most of it, so it was an easy ride home. Chris and I were able to kick back and watch movies. (Actually, if truth be told, I usually watch movies for most of our flights anyway. He always seems to end up sitting with the kids as they always want to sit with the pilot.:rolleyes1)

And just like that, our 11 days at Walt Disney World had come to an end.

UP NEXT: Final Thoughts and Plans for the Next Trip

Great DTD pictures and more superb pictures of your kids. They are seriously two of the most photogenic kids I have ever seen and their goodbye smiles are so endearing. (Love that tinkerbell line).

I really think I am going to add the Gospel Brunch to my list of things I really want to do on future visits. Thanks for the endorsement. Its great to know the food is good and since I play church music every week (boring catholic church music - lol) I think I would love it. We recently had a gospel choir at once of our masses and it was fantastic. I loved it. Funny - I noticed people either loved it or they didn't.

That line about you and Christine had me :rotfl2:

Can't wait to hear about your future plans.

I am so sad that your trip report has come to an end as I've enjoyed it immensely!!! Your candid retelling of your story was just so refreshing and your highs and lows every wife and mother could relate to at some point in all of our trips;) You certainly had many experiences between all the resorts and restaurants that you either stayed at or ate at and I enjoyed hearing about every one of them! Thanks so much for taking the time to put them all in writing for us readers:thumbsup2 I hope I'll get the opportunity to read another TR from you on a future trip. :woohoo:
