I have sewed several things in the past but have never actually used a pattern...I usually just wing it ...I think I will take both of your advice though and alter an existing pattern...Tahnks Again!

I think if you're used to going patternless anyway- you could easily wing it. The dress itself is pretty basic. No matter where you start, you have to figure out how you want to do the bottom anyway.

As previously mentioned, there are at least three "right ways" to do it too, lol. Have fun!

I plan on using the Simply Sweet dress and top pattern by CarlaC on YCMT.com and just altering it to make it look like the dress from the movie.

Thank you for giving such an in-depth answer! I was too lazy to do that! I love your dress!

I'm hoping Tessa won't be too hot in her dress. For the underskirt I used a really thin cotton for most of it and then attached 3 eyelet ruffles to it at the bottom. But, it still feels pretty heavy.

DD's felt heavy because it was inititally WAY too big when I made it. I trimmed down the bodice but just gathered the skirt more and it ended up very full/heavy!

She made out ok though- that sparkly fabric is actually pretty cool. (And soft on the inside too- that really surprised me.)

Have fun! Can't wait to hear how she makes out with the sisters and Cindy! (and look early for the mice! We never were able to find them!!)

I'm trying to figure out the straps; I've never seen this before. I remember you did something similar on your Pooh top but this looks different. Do you have buttons at the back on the bodice?

OKay, I will tell ya why these look different (And they there is no picture of the back of the outfit! lol) I did not do the buttons yet. Olivia wanted to try it on so I just tied it behind her neck so that she could try it on and, well, She was being cute so i had to take pictures. It is ifnished now but she wants "Something new to try on" so I am working on new stuff! :rotfl2: Little booger wears something once and then never again!

Will be posting more pictures soon of my new dresses I made today! Just gottan finish the bottom ruffle on one of them!

I was at my Hancock's this morning and they had a Singer Ad and they are going to have a particular type of sewing machine for $99 in 2 weeks. I'm wondering if this is a good sewing machine and if I should think about getting one.

Here is what it says about the machine:

Singer Heavy Duty Sew & Serge Sewing Machine (Brand new 2008 models)
These special heavy duty machines have a metal hook (not plastic) and are bulit for years of extended service. Machines are new in factory sealed cartons with 25 yr. limited warranty

It goes on to tell some specifics about the machine:
1. Sophisitcated sewing machine that does buttonholes (any size), invisible blind hems, monograms, ribbing, doubles seams, zippers, sews on buttons, darning, applique, zig zag, basting & quilting.

2. It has a professional serging stitch that allows you to sew the seam and serge the edge of the material in one operations. With the purchase of an optional side cutter, you can trim the excess material as you sew.

3. Designed to sew all fabrics such as denim, canvas, upholstery, nylon, stretch materials, silk, percale, organdy and leather.

Anybody have a machine like this? Or know anything about them?

I have an inexpensive Janome that Hancock's runs on sale around Christmas for about $85.00. I've had it for 3 years and might be in the market for something better.

UPDATE! I just got off the phone with Singer b/c I haven't been able to find out anything about this machine. The lady told me that the machine that would be offered is #1507 and you can see it on their website (www.singerco.com). I have to say that by looking at the website, I am not impressed with the machine. It really doesn't look much better than mine. And, I don't remember the website saying anything about the machine being able to "sew the seam and serge the edge of the material in one operation".

I may just have to go to the store on the day of the sale to check it out.

If anyone still knows anything about it -- please let me know!!

Singer 1507!!!!

Just wanted to add that I have loved everything that has been posted lately!!!!

I am almost finished with a new outfit for Parker and will post pics when I am finished!

I started with a pattern that I thought sort of resembled the top, then winged it with the bottom. I did make 2 of the skirt, one for a lining, so I could add netting to make it stand out. I did get yelled at tho'. I made a shorter dress, so she wouldn't be falling over anything. Like a party dress. And Kirsta wanted to be JUST like Cinderellas, to the floor! So I bought pretty pink sparkly shoes to go with it.

Singer 1507!!!!

I don't know anything about this machine. I grew up sewing on a Singer, and used one for years. Then went to a Janome, very basic, that I really liked. With recommendations from everyone here, I went with a Brother CS6000. I got it from Walmart for about $180 and I LOVE it! I feel like I have come up into the modern world. :rotfl: You could take a look at Walmarts website to see what you think.

Just wanted to drop by and say hello to everyone.... I haven't had a chance to do much sewing lately.....couple weeks ago, I had a gallbladder attack (my second one) and the ultrasound showed a pretty big stone, so I am off to see a surgeon tomorrow afternoon to talk about surgery. Oh what fun! A week after that, I had an allergic reaction to something and broke out in hives from head to toe and up to this day, I still have no idea what cause it! Right now..we are pretty much living in chaos...the kids went upstair into our master bath and left the water running at the sink, and it flooded the whole bathroom, part of the master bedroom and closet, and the water came leaking through downstairs into our laundry room, downstairs bathroom and the garage! Quite a bit of damage was done since I didn't discover the water until at least 1 1/2 hours later! All the rooms are still being dried by these huge industrial dryer/fans right now, and the guy just came and checked and it is still wet. All the flooring had to be completely removed in the master bath, and insulation removed from the walls, and through the ceiling in the garage!

Anyway, I didn't get a chance to go back and catch on some of the older post, but did go back the last few pages. Sorry I didn't quote but I will say that I love all the customs!!!

HeatherSue/TeresaJoy...I can't believe you are leaving soon!! Your kids/nieces are going to get some attention with all those wonderful customs. Can't wait to see more pictures when you get back! We leave in about 43 days!!!

I will post some pictures later of some outfits that I completed before all the chaos began!

Singer 1507!!!!

Not sure why, but your hyperlink didn't work. Let's try it again.

(edited to add: your link probably is fine--I just can't open it--or mine!)

This appears to be a very basic sewing machine. There may be an add-on accessory that will trim and possibly overcast seams, but it won't be a one-step operation. It also has a four-step buttonholer. Many people don't mind them; I'm not a fan! :)

If you're looking for a decent sewing machine and specifically want a Singer, I would go with something like the Model 7468. A bit pricier, but worth it for a machine you can grow with for a few years. The disadvantage to purchasing a sewing machine from HSN or similar discount retailer is that your local shop will charge you for lessons.

If you want true serger functions, you'll need to invest in a serger. Singer (and I think another company) did bring out a dual machine once, but I'm not sure I would like that. Dual features = dual problems. Similar to all-in-one copier-fax-printers. If one feature goes, the entire item goes. *sigh*

I hope everything gets better!!!

I don't think anyone answered me the first time so I am going to ask again....sometimes I feel ignored.:confused3

For those who do the Carla C PP dress... do you use a serger or do you zigzag or do you do something else?
The pattern says to zigzag the ends but it is a pain on my machine.

I zig zag everything. I go through and sew all the seams with a straight stitch than go back after I am finished and zig zag the raw edges at once - saves me from switching the settings on the machine and forgetting about it. (More often than once I have started sewing what I thought was a straight stitch to find out the machine was still on zig zag.)

A BIG THANK YOU to Lori (lori123) for getting me the Little Einsteins fabric. I made 2 halter dresses (one with ties in the back and one with shirring). I CASED the design from this thread. Here is a preview:
Patpatrocketdress007.jpg

Pat Pat is appliquéd on the bodice using Heather's tutorial. I hand embroidered the headlights and the rocket fire power. The pattern was winged but based on CarlaC's strip-work jumper pattern. I winged the back part and this was the first time I shirred. DH looked at the shirring and even said "That looks fancy. I like it."

One dress is for DD Lauren and the other is for her best friend Amanda. Their birthdays are 3 days apart and we are having a joint birthday party for the girls friends. I am pushing for a Little Einsteins theme.
