Wood smoke smell and sinus infection

I'm posting this as a public service announcement, because I've never heard of it before (47 years old) and neither had my husband (51).

Last week, I started realizing that I was smelling wood smoke in my office. I'm allergic to smoke, and it bothered me. The problem was that there was no smoke.

Then I realized that I was smelling it other places. :rolleyes1 I was starting to wonder about my sanity. ;) I told my DH about it, and he said that he'd never heard of anybody doing that before.

I decided to try to google wood smoke smell and allergies/sinus, because I do have that problem. I found that quite a few people have this happen. Apparently, it can be a symptom of a deep seated sinus infection even though there are no other symptoms (odd smells can also be a sign of brain tumors, FYI).

I went to the doctor and found I have fever. I felt dumb for not knowing I had fever, but it's been so hot around here, everybody was hot! :rotfl:

Anyway, if you ever have this happen, see a doctor! :thumbsup2

when i was experiencing frequent sinus infections i would always know my sinuses were infected because i smelled pee everywhere. it due to the constant infected mucus laying low in my bottom sinuses. have had any problems at all since i haf corrective surgery. now the only place i smell pee is in the bathroom

I wish my sinus infections smelled like wood smoke. That would be more pleasant than my reality.

:rotfl2: That's a new one, I didn't come across that particular complaint while I was searching on the internet, but, to be honest, I didn't google that particular phrase! :rotfl:

I'm sorry, I hope you're better soon! :flower3:

I have that sometimes too. But I think I may really BE crazy. For me, it's the smell of cigarette smoke (to which I am allergic as well)...When there are no smokers anywhere in sight. I spent weeks wondering what was going on with me! Everyone thought I was crazy! I asked a doctor, and he suggested that maybe it was a hormonal thing (i.e. at certain times of the month).

So I have this every now and then, and I have never officially been checked for anything. I just came to the conclusion that I really am crazy...LOL

I'll have to check the sinus infection thing. I did have chronic sinus infections when I was younger. I'd hate to think that I've had a sinus infection for the last 6 months and didn't know it, though...:rotfl:

I have had a couple of sinus infections, and one time I didn't realize I had a fever, either.

I never smelled weird things, though.

I did find the cigarette smoke smell talked about on some of the sites that I looked at. I'm like you, I couldn't believe I'd had a sinus infection this long without knowing it. After I read it, I did notice that I had dark smudges under my eyes (one in particular).

Only some of the people who posted about it had doctors who recognized it for what it was (mine did when I went to see her). Some of them sent them for all kinds of tests (MRI, etc.) due to the possibility of a brain tumor.

After getting a shot and being on meds for several days, the smell is pretty much gone (now and then it will come back just a little). Apparently, that really was what it was. Very strange, but I'm glad to know it... :rolleyes1
