Facebook and Reddit is so full of hatred towards "rich" people. I have read so many posts and seen a handful of memes of people almost celebrating the loss/damage of property. Even Mandy Moore faced backlash for sharing a GoFundMe for her family members.

I don't think people understand that many of the victims are not super wealthy. People absolutely do need help right now.

I wonder if people will be less inclined to donate towards the fire victims due to this strange narrative that the rich should be fending for themselves.

Being mindful of the rules here, my view is that peoples willingness to help and whether or not they will be less inclined to donate towards the fire victims will be shaped by whether or not they like blue or red.

I disagree. Most people don't care who you voted for when a tragedy like this occurs. We are all in this together and I bet they will have a lot of help.

I don't agree with this. It seems certain people, no matter which way they lean, celebrate tragedies when they occur in the lives of the wealthy. When Luigi Mangione murdered the CEO, he was a hero to many on both sides of the aisle.

I agree with this 💯. The media likes to attach politics to disasters, but I don't think that people are going to ask for a voter registration card before donating their time or money.

Post this on the Controversial Topics board. No issue with the rules there.

It depends on what you hear ...in my wife's community there is a train of thought that for sure will not incline folks to help...then on ABC this morning from the horse track a reporter said "folks are coming here without bags to carry the donations ..... home "... that is a red flag ...who is actually driving to racetrack

I don't want this to be political or controversial. It was not even a thought in my mind.

I was just reading about Mandy Moore and reflecting on how other online communities have been somewhat aggressive in their disdain for some of the fire victims.

I was actually more interested in the psychology of it all. Will people be less inclined to donate, host fundraisers, etc. for a perceived wealthy population.

It depends on what your definition of "help with the rebuilding" means. For example, am I willing to donate money to buy construction materials & costs for people to rebuild their homes? No. Am I willing to donate supplies or money to a local charity that is providing relief support to people impacted by the fires? Sure, absolutely.

The angst around celebrities seems to be primarily because they are so heavily focused on news stories, a running tally of whose home was lost, etc. I do understand how that can make people upset, at the end of the day however celebrities are still people and still people who lost things. Truth is however many probably self-insured themselves or had policies through high dollar places like Lloyds of London or Chubb. In most respects they are not the ones who will have lost the most in terms of can they or can they not rebuild. In other cases (and probably a decent amount truly) it may not have been their only residence.

I actually would disagree with the statement "I don't think people understand that many of the victims are not super wealthy." I think actually they do understand that and that's why you're seeing the comments directed towards the wealthy because people would rather the focus be on the less wealthy who have stood to have lost overall and on average more. It doesn't make a loss not a loss however. Personally that's why I've been looking at donation places aimed at a larger group of people who stand to benefit from it.

Media only reports opinions expressed by individuals. But I exclude YouTube "influencers" and podcasters from the label "media". Not sure it really matters. California is run by one party, but statistics show people affiliated with the other party donate far more money to charity. But the reality is, the vast majority of the relief money is coming from the Government, both state and federal..

Speaking as an outsider ie Canadian it probably will have some effect...or at least people will give to organizations they trust.

in part, the media is at fault because they choose to interview celebrities but the area is simply massive and still growing. And in every community, rich or not, there are a lot of regular people ie. cooks and carpenters, cleaners and police officers. even some of the firefighters have lost their homes.

Well, the average home in Los Angeles County sold for $989,000 in November. $662,000 is the average in the county I live in 400 miles away. And it is $205,000 in Toledo, Ohio. So a million dollars in regards to housing in Los Angeles County doesn't go very far. But I have been scolded on these boards when I questioned whether an individual making $150,000 a year was middle class when I consider half that amount to be near the top of middle class bracket. I guess in the case of Los Angeles, $150,000 may not be as rich as i think.

We send sizeable donations 3 times a year to the Red Cross because there will always be Wildfires
Tornadoes and Hurricane devastation. I never ask "exactly who or what state is this going to" nor do
does it matter. Help is Help and I trust they will distribute funds accordingly.

*Also not every home destroyed was beach mansions. City of Altadena homes were destroyed also.*

Oh my goodness. LOL. That is not the issue at all.

I don't "care" about the opinions. But they sure do raise some eyebrows.

If we didn't read or comment on the opinions of others, this board would not exist.
I've seen the exact memes and comments you're talking about on Facebook but like....it's Facebook. Just laugh at the stupidity and move on.
