Why didn't you all tell me the Wonder is the best ship in the fleet?

We sailed the Magic out of Puerto Rico a couple of weeks back, came home for a week, then sailed the Wonder out of San Diego. I had previously thought the Magic was the best ship, but it fell a little short on being maintained to Disney standards on the most recent trip. The Wonder was such a pleasant surprise though, as it had all of the benefits of the Magic, but nearly everything was just a little better, in my opinion.

Sailing the two ships only a week a part, made it really easy to compare. Immediately upon entering the ship, the public spaces seemed noticeably nicer and in better condition. I liked the public spaces more where they varied too, such as the New Orleans themed bar. On the very first day at Cabanas, both my wife and I noticed the food was noticeably better. Generally, the MDR food was about the same and consistent between the two ships.

The production of Frozen (which I am not even a huge fan of generally) was hands down better than any performance we have seen on the ships. It didn't help that the sound system in the Magic is broken and made everyone sound like they had a lisp, but the talent in the Frozen show was top notch and we all enjoyed it from start to finish.

The only exception I can think of is it is missing the Aquadunk or a similar experience. I also think the overall theming of the Tangled restaurant is better than Tianna's, but Tiana's wins for the menu and entertainment, which is mostly enjoyable background music instead of singers who sound like they are yelling half of the time, making it impossible to communicate during dinner.

The staff was exceptional too, really bending over backwards to assist my daughter who had her leg amputated but doesn't have her prosthesis yet. They made sure she had a good place to sit, escorted her into the front row for the show, and otherwise made sure things were easier for her.

While we didn't have an ADA room on the Magic to compare it too, I will note that the ADA room was exceptional on the Wonder, making the cruise much more enjoyable for my daughter. Disney went above and beyond with the automatic doors, a closet that has a lowering bar, roll in shower, space to move around in a wheelchair, etc.

The adult districts were very similar between the ships, but I thought the Wonder was slightly nicer, like most of the ship.

A couple of non-Wonder-specific observations:

Our stateroom host was amazing and we formed a genuine friendship with him. He asked for a photo with the family on the last day and asked for us to reach out if we visit India. He was such a hard worker, said how much he appreciated us being there since he loved working for Disney and the life it provided his family back home, and never once mentioned the survey. It was a genuine treat to see him every day and have conversations with him to learn about his family and home.

Unfortunately, our dining server could not let the survey go. There wasn't a single dinner that he didn't bring it up. In the past, all it took was me mentioning how I know how important it is and that anything short of excellent is the same as giving a bad review, and they let it go. But not him. The sad part is that he was a great server otherwise, so he wasn't doing himself any favors. He would have received an excellent without the speech, but it really put a damper on the experience. I blame Disney for creating the stupid system. The head server was great too - not too overbearing like some (including one who gave me an odd speech about him being Christian on the last cruise), but friendly and there if we needed something. I would have mentioned the survey talk being a problem to the head server, but it was only a four night cruise and each time I assumed we were past that it popped up again, so by the time I realized it was an issue the cruise was over. It was also awkward because they were so friendly and helpful with getting my daughter situated, bringing her a special cake, and even a gift, that I didn't want to make a big deal out of it. I have heard others complain about the speech in the past and wondered what the big deal was, but now I get it. It was like being cornered by a used car salesman at the end of every dinner.

I was also pleasantly surprised to learn that a 4-night cruise still feels pretty long. I will continue to favor 7 days+, but it worked well for a quick get-a-way and was better than expected.

The ship had a higher number for first timers sailing, so it was fun to see their excitement too. And can I just say, there is something about people who sail Disney and their acceptance of people who are different. Generally when my daughter is out an about in public, she gets a lot of stares and whispers, but on the ship, people just treated her like everyone else, but offered to help with elevators and the like. She even had a five year old hold an elevator door for her. It was nice for her to be in such a pleasant environment. You all are doing something right.

All in all, I just really liked the Wonder and think its the best ship we have sailed to date (Fantasy many times, Magic twice, Wonder once). It seems like a ship that doesn't get a lot of talk, likely due to off-beat and shorter itineraries.

Well, she is a year younger than Magic, who has been a workhorse over the years.

Seriously, happy to hear it was Wonderful. Not just the ship, but the total package.

I wonder (that was not intentional) if part of the wear and tear on Magic is related to itineraries. She continues to do a lot of warm weather, beach vacations. Or the type people who work and travel to places like Alaska, Hawaii, or Australia are gentler to her.

Again, yeah.

I agree that the Magic and the Wonder are the best, but I had the opposite impression about overall maintenance, that the Magic was just a tiny bit more spruced up. Part of that might have been that I was on the Wonder in Alaska, and everything is just a bit less shiny when it's gray and raining the whole time.

Just another observation - the ADA room on the Wonder was far superior to the ADA room at the Grand Californian (which was too small for wheelchair purposes, did not have automatic doors, and had zero counter space since they used it to make the bathroom ADA legal. I'm not exaggerating when I say we couldn't even put a hair brush down anywhere. There was also no hooks on the walls to hang clothes or anything, making it really difficult to use the bathroom to get ready for the day. I never thought a cruise ship would have a much better room than a "luxury" hotel. But kudos to the ship designers!

Also - I would not recommend the Wyndham if sailing out of San Diego. Maybe my standards are too high, but it was really gross. There were black stains on the sheets in both beds, hair on the bathroom floors, a giant cockroach, and it was just old and smelly overall. The ADA room did not meet current standards either, as there was a lip on the "roll in shower" and it was so dirty and gross that nobody used that shower. I get that people like to walk across the street in the morning, but it wasn't worth it to me. I would instead stay somewhere clean and park there in the morning, since non-guests can buy parking for the duration of the cruise. In the end, it did the job, but we were grateful to leave it an board the beautiful ship.

That's surprising, it went through a complete remodel a few years back. When we were there the room was nice and no issues, also many recommend it for a cruise stay.

I had read such good things about it, and others in our group seemed to love it, but it was not clean. We had two rooms and it was the same issue in both rooms, so I don't think it was a fluke. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the one shower was so gross that nobody in our family would use it. I also know that roaches can happen in the nicest hotels in certain locations, and this one came in the room on the first floor, so it might have come straight from outside, but it didn't help the situation. On top of that, the ADA room had a flimsy sliding door that opened to a courtyard that was wide open to the street and my daughters called us at 10 pm and asked me to come down because there was a man yelling obscenities at the top of his lungs just outside the sliding door. Let's just say, the overall experience was memorable. There are so many great hotels in the city, I would look at other options if I was sailing from there again and just park there. But, it was very nice the next morning to walk out of the front door and be 100 feet from the ship.

The Wonder was my first ship in 2013 and I feel like you that she is the best ship in the fleet. I always thought it was nostalgia, so it’s great to hear from someone who is new to the ship to feel the same!
The Wonder was our first cruise ever back in 2009. I think we got some kind of insane recession or Florida resident deal because I remember it being crazy cheap. We so loved it, and have now been back on DCL another 20 times and heading towards Pearl, all thanks to the Wonder. She's such a great ship. We got to sail her again a few years later in Alaska, but have since been on the others, and I do really want to sail her again. Especially with the awesome new itineraries.

Great review @brentm77! Thank you!

The Wonder was the first ship we sailed on back in 2015 and she is the ship we have been on the most (7 out of 11 cruises). She feels like home to us and is by far our fave.
We have sailed out of SD three times now (and a 4th coming up next March) and stayed at the Wyndham all 3 times. However, our last stay (December 2022) will be our last, we found it dirty and many things broken, etc. Nothing compared to the first two times we stayed there (in 2018 and 2019) so we will be finding somewhere else to stay in 2025.

The Wonder was also our first ship, back in 2019, and we really loved it. Since then, we've only been on the Dream, which was a sold-out ship and felt overwhelmingly crowded as a result, and we have an upcoming cruise on the Wish which I'm hoping won't be as packed. I do think the Wonder may end up being my overall favorite, even if there are things I appreciate about the bigger ships like Remy or the bigger waterslides. There was just something about the Wonder that felt classy and classic.

I sailed on the Wonder out of San Diego twice and stayed at the Springhill Suites right across from the port both times (avoided the Wyndham because I had heard scary things from TripAdvisor and vloggers). Springhill was in great shape (in 2021 and 2022) and very clean, and it was a quick walk to the port.

I think the Magic and the Wonder are similar enough not to have a preference. The food and dining team change, so can get worse or better next time. So does the show crew (which I always think are mind blowing on each and every cruise). The Frozen show is amazing, but so is the Tangled show. And indeed, the Tangled restaurant has a better theming than Tiana’s, but way too much screaming versus the pleasant music from Tiana’s. The Aquadunk was a one & done for me, so doesn’t make a difference to me.

Like many others on this thread, the Wonder was our first ship and we consider her to be our home. We took her to Alaska and had one of our best family vacations/adventures ever. Not the biggest fan of Frozen either, but the show is exceptionally good. I adore Tiana's. And your stateroom host, the CM's and the passengers that accepted your daughter and made her cruise wonderful warms my heart. Great review!

I love the Wonder! Don’t have much to compare it to (yet), but I do prefer it over the Magic. But I didn’t have any major complaints about the Magic! I just liked some of the theming of spaces better on the Wonder. (We were just on the Magic last week, I didn’t notice any major issues with the upkeep or areas where it was looking tired 🤷‍♀️)

The Wonder was my first and the ship I’ve spent the most nights on. I always wonder if it’s nostalgia, but when I sailed her in 2022/23 I realised that wasn’t the case. I agree she’s better maintained than the Magic, but I do prefer Tangled and Twice Charmed.

Happy to say I’ll be back on the Wonder next year. ❤️

IMO, both Magic and Wonder have seen better days. I would sail on them for short jaunts, as that's where they still have value. We have great memories of both. Spent a combined 5 weeks on the two as recently as in 2022.

But, today, the ships have tired rooms, aging engineering, hardly any dining options, and small public areas. They do serve a necessary price point, and I understand why Disney is still invested in them.

If everyone learns the Wonder is the best it'll get too popular and the prices will go even higher! 😉
