Who in your family served in Military ?

No one, except conscription.

Currently working on my family tree again. Not a single person whose profession was listed as soldier or something similar for the past 250 years.

In the Netherlands being in the military is not a career many people chose. I think I only know one person, and that was the father of a schoolfriend 40 years ago.

I have this photo of my great-grandfather at 18, having his photo taken for my great-grandmother before shipping off to France in early 1918:

Their marriage didn't last. When he came back from France at 20 he was a different person. He never spoke about his wartime experiences-he became silent and moody, my great-grandmother told us. He left her with two small boys to go out to California for a couple of years, and when he came back she had moved on with another man. He would never allow her to divorce him, so she just did her own thing...this was the great-grandmother who ran the "boardinghouse" that I've spoken of in other threads. Today he could be treated for PTSD, what was called "shell shock," but back then they just told you to man up.

Both my dad and DH's (though neither talk about it much), his uncle, two of our grandfathers (that I know of) and my great-grandfather (who I remember visiting in the VA nursing home when I was really little.)

The one I know most about was DH's brother. - He was a Fire Protection Specialist in the Air Force.

Maternal Grandfather: 2nd Lieutenant, Forward Observer in the Army...35th Infantry...landed on Omaha Beach 30 days after the landings, saw fierce fighting in St. Lo, liberated Paris, wounded at Battle of the Bulge and received Purple Heart and then moved with his unit to hold the line in the Netherlands, and then on to cross into Germany. He never talked about his service or his time in the Army.

My father joined the Navy in the early 60s, worked in the engine room on a supply ship, never saw combat, got out after four years, and talks about it to this day.

Two very, very different military experiences for sure.

My father spent two years in the army during the Korean War, but stayed in the US the entire time. I think he mentioned Fort Benning in Georgia and Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Basic training at Fort Dix in New Jersey.

Various uncles and male cousins served too. One cousin was in the army for maybe 30+ years.

Daddy and his brother - Navy during WWII
Grand daddy Army during WWII
One brother Army one brother Marine reserves
Hubby and nephew - Marines
Son - Navy

That is just recent generations. I have had a grandfather as far back as Revolutionary War that have served in every war, including one on each side of the Civil War or if there wasn't a war going on, at least in the military.

Uncle -- Army, Killed in action in Korea
Uncle -- Army
Uncle -- Air Force
Dad -- Air Force

These are all on my dad's side of the family.... His brothers and brother-in-law. His brother-in-law's brothers also both served.

Of my uncles and dad, my uncle who was killed in action is the only one who served during wartime, I believe. The others served between the Korean and Vietnam wars, and my dad was stateside the whole time.

My dad was instructed in radar use by Al Worden, Apollo 15 Command Module pilot, and also used to debrief Mr. Worden after some of his flights.

I have ancestors who fought in the American Revolution!
My hubby was in the Army for 29 years. 3 of his 4 children are in the military- 2 Army and 1 Air Force.
My father was career Air Force and died 2 years ago from complications from Agent Orange.
My Uncle was in WWII and another was in Korea.
