White after Labor Day

I bought a super cute white skirt a few weeks ago and I want to wear it this weekend but I can hear my mom in my ear saying “never wear white after Labor Day.” I’m a middle aged woman who has never, under any circumstances, worn white after Labor Day.

What say you? White after Labor Day… Is it A-OK or No Way?
I love wearing white, so I do wear it after Labor Day. I know my Grandma is scolding me from heaven, but I still do it anyway - LOL!
I’ll wear white until the middle to the end of October.

Wear whatever colors you enjoy regardless of the time of the year. It always seemed like a nonsensical fashion 'rule' to me and I never understood the reasoning behind it.
Same!
I never understood it either. I also don’t understand no white shoes or purses after Labor Day. I often wonder who started that fashion rule.

I think years ago dictating to women what to wear and when was seemingly tolerated. Not so much anymore, thankfully.

Not according to Kathleen Turner.

The victim in the video clip is Patricia Hearst. Yes, THAT Patty Hearst.

I was curious and just had to look it up -

"It turns out that not wearing white after Labor Day actually goes back about 200 years. In the 19th century, wealthy New Yorkers would spend their summers on vacation near the coast, wearing white outfits to stay cool.

When the season was over, they'd pack up their outfits and return to the dirty city.
Wearing white was a sign of being upper class since your outfits wouldn't get dirty while working. Once folks packed up their white outfits after Labor Day, they would stay in storage until the weather got warm again."

As someone with a degree in Fashion Merchandising Management (Do I use that degree? unfortunately no) I can tell you that was specifically for SHOES and the reasoning was mostly because they were more likely to get dirty if worn outside of sunny summer months.
This "rule" has long been out dated.
Wear your white.
If you want to "follow the rule" then wear a light brown shoe with it.

My sister told me, women after 40 don't wear jeans. I wear jeans. Not white jeans though. LOL

Don't people wear a lot of white at Christmas??? Are those people breaking rules???
No not that I’ve ever seen. Maybe in hot climates? Never seen white at Christmas in Canada.

My sister and I have a few white sweatshirts that we wear if it gets cold. If it gets cold for Christmas, we would wear them. A couple of them have embroidered snowman faces on them, and some are just plain white.

We really don’t have much in the way of fall or winter clothes because we so seldom need them. I have a couple of sweatshirts and a couple of jackets, but wear my standard wardrobe year round. It has every color in it, from black to pastels and white, and the fabrics are going to be lighter weight as well.

I think the white after Labor Day rule should be retired or relaxed. As you said, the warmer climates are going to dress much differently in January than the colder ones.

White skirt? Sure why not?
Of course there is more black in my wardrobe than any other color soooo what do I know.
Oh.
But don’t wear white shoes (anytime) unless you’re a waitress or nurse OR it’s Halloween….
