I have not paid extra for second driver in years and this is with different companies. Note: common ans I get to the question is so long as the second driver is on my same insurance they have no issues .... I typically use National/Alamo/National (all are one company), but not exclusively
Thanks!Incorrect information, Unless you are using a corporate code with Alamo that specifically permits a 2nd driver, you need to pay the extra $10 pp charge.
Even with the free extra driver, be aware they must present themselves at checkin with DL & (some companies)have their own CC.
Alamo: There is a per day charge for all additional drivers. Alamo used to allow spouses as an additional driver for no extra fee, but as of 5/12/14 they have removed this benefit. Alamo now charges for any and all additional drivers regardless of relationship.
Avis/Budget/Enterprise/Fox: There is no additional driver fee for a spouse or domestic partner. Other individuals will incur a per-day fee. Avis and Budget currently charge $13 per day at most locations but cap the fee at $65 per rental.
Dollar/Thrifty: Both companies typically charge per day for all additional drivers (including spouses).
Hertz: There is a per day charge for all additional drivers, but if you are a member of their #1 Club (free to join), the fee is waived for a spouse or domestic partner. FYI - USSA members also get this benefit along with AAA which I believe still offers complimentary Gold Status.
National: There is a per day charge for all additional drivers, but if you are a member of Emerald Club (free to join), the fee is waived for a spouse, domestic partner, or immediate family member who has the same address on their driver's license as the Emerald Club member.
Sixt: There is a charge per day for all additional drivers (including spouses).
Are you meaning that you'll let your Costco membership lapse if you don't use it for a rental car?I'm trying to figure out if I still "need" my costco membership... anyone know what companies offer that perk without a costco card?
Yes. I like costco, but I don't really need it IRL all the time. I mainly use it for the extra driver free and discounted car rentals. trying to decide if it's worth the $60 annual fee for this. It might be,i have an upcoming trip and need the better rate and extra driver added. Does USAA apply only to hertz, and only for spouse? we are also usaa members...Are you meaning that you'll let your Costco membership lapse if you don't use it for a rental car?

Thanks! Usaa has saved my DH some major rental fees for being under 25 so far,its great! As far as Costco, my membership is just expiring now, so no deal for me. that's why I'm considering,it's a lot of money. But it may be my best option,b/c of the 2nd driver thing that I must have for our next big trip. There is no additional driver fee for the spouse or domestic partner of a USAA member OR one additional USAA member from the same household for a rental at participating Avis and Budget locations in the U.S. The additional driver must be a USAA member and meet the Avis minimum age requirement, present a valid driver's license and an acceptable credit/debit card at the time of rental. In addition, USAA covers Avis/Budget underage driver fees. Underage driver must meet credit card requirements and be the primary driver on the vehicle (they can't be an additional driver).
