Where do you keep your laptop at WDW?

Just crossed my mind: I am thinking of taking my laptop on the next trip - still thinking about it - but where do you keep it in your hotel room? Disney safes are for small valuables.

I took my Samsung netbook last year and just left it in a locked suitcase

Sounds good to me! Thanks. Just thought it would be nice to be able to email some photos to my parents (and colleagues in Scotland ) while we are there and sure the use of in-room internet would be cheaper than paying for picture messages.

With a bit of wiggling, I've always managed to get mine in the safe, then fill everything else in around it. Admittedly, I am very good at fitting a lot into a very tiny space (you should see how much I manage to fit in my tiny locker at work! ), but it does go in, along with phones, money, paperwork!

Are you SERIOUS? Gee, I thought I was the queen of packing the impossible and "making it fit" (you should see our suitcases on the return ). But I recall the safe at ASMu last year being TINY! Do you have a full sized laptop?

Yes, I have a full sized laptop, and it's even widescreen! Never took my laptop while staying at Pop, so couldn't tell you how well it would fit into a Value resort safe. We stayed at POR the year before last, and as long as it was twisted and held in the right place it would go in.

Fitted into the SSR okay, but didn't try the OKW one in the end. A bonus of DVC is free internet, so I was on the laptop a lot more than previously, and in the end I got bored of skillfully getting it in and out! Beauty of DVC means there's not someone coming into your room every day!

You may have a point about the size of safes at various resorts. We are doing POFQ this year. I would hate to twist the laptop in and not be able to get it out thought.....! I may otherwise do what DISWolf does and keep it in a locked suitcase.

Still don't know if it is worth the hassle of taking it through the airport. I am not totally clear on the policy re. laptops and hand luggage although I have been reading the other read relating to it. Thanks

Hopefully, this will make things a little clearer in that regard:

The basics are laptops need to be screened separately because the bags/covers/whatever that come with them can obscure things in the Xray machine. Therefore, they go through solely as a laptop without anything to cover them.

The confusion comes in that certain airlines allow one thing, other airlines allow something different in regards to what you can carry on. MOST airlines allow you to have a carry-on bag, plus one other from a selected few items, of which a laptop is normally one, as long as the combined weight of the two does not exceed the limit.

Flights to the US are a bit stricter, and generally restrict you to just one bag, of which your laptop must be apart of. You could carry your laptop in a laptop bag, and have your rucksack, but you would need to be able to fit the laptop bag inside your regular rucksack and still remain within the dimensions/weight limits of the hand luggage.

Does that make a little more sense now?

I took my laptop this year, I kept it away locked away in a bag however I think the safes in the newer resorts are bigger and designed for a laptop to fit in.
I took my laptop in a rucksack and also put books, magazines etc in the same bag, you just have to take it out to go through security and send it through seperatly. Also make sure it is charged up in case they ask you to turn it on.

I took my laptop with us in December last year and had no problem through security at all. I bought a neoprene case/sleeve for it rather than using a laptop bag and put it in my hand luggage. When we got to security I took it out of the hand luggage but left it in the neoprene sleeve, put it in one of the plastic trays and it went through no problem.

I kept it in a locked suitcase in the room and didn't even try the safe.

Oh, just a thought. We flew with Continental so didn't have an issue with the weight of the hand baggage as it was upto 18kgs. Some airlines have a much lower restriction on the weight.

Yes, Virgin is (I think) 6 kg for hand luggage. I will need to check that as a laptop is fairly heavy. I don't ever recall having my hand luggage weighed. I think if you have it in a bag that is within the dimension restrictions, they probably don't worry as much - unless they do random checks.

Thanks wideeyes for pointing out to make sure it is charged. I probably would have forgotten/not thought of that!

We take a couple with us, leave them in a drawer, under bed, or between bed an bedside cabinet. Anywhere really. OKW last year would not have been big enough for 1 never mind 2, just enough room for passports, docs etc.

Well I must be really naive but I just leave mine connected to the internet connection on the table - have never had a problem.

Surely if it goes missing from your room while you're there the hotel is liable.

We're the same. In all of our many trips we've always just left the laptop on the table plugged in. Never had any troubles.

However, I would have thought Disney (and other hotel chains) cover themselves by limiting their liability for in-room losses. I expect they would require/suggest that valuables be placed in the hotel safe.

Just been Goggling the subject, that seems to be what the majority of posts say, hotels are not liable if they offer a saftey deposit box or safe, Your responsibility.
I am sure they will have it in the T&C's somewhere but can't see it.

That's what I would have thought. Even your travel insurance is unlikely to cover you for something if you didn't take due care. I will probably lock it in a suitcase. Re. safe size Wayne, I also seem to think our last one got passports, keys and a small camera in. Couldn't get my big camera into it, I am pretty sure. Just googling the info on internet access in the resorts though. Seems quite reasonable price wise, but allears mentioned something about a $125 refundable deposit. The way they had punctuated the sentences, I wasn't clear if this applied to FW Campground or what it was for ..... Will check. Not wiling to go to too much hassle to use it a handful of times, but thought it would be nice to keep in touch with my parents - they STILL fret a little that I jet off alone with DD . You would think they would know me by now!

WDW in-room internet access is billed at $9.95 + tax for 24 hours of access. It is free for DVC members staying on points. There is no refundable deposit required. Most resorts offer wired internet only, but we did have wireless (and an excellent signal!) at BLT.

Did you have to go and "arrange" it with the front desk, or do you just plug n go and they track your usage period and charge to your room accordingly? I wouldn't use it every day as we tend to spend very little time in our room aside from sleeping. I don't want to be billed for the entire trip, so just checking how they monitor / charge this. It comes up on your screen you will be charged $9.95, you accept and your room is charged, when your 24 hour period is done it asks if you want to continue for another $9.95. Some can manage to get 2 days out of 1 x 24 hour payment, use it late 1 day then earlier the next before your time expires, we didn't do well with that, use it too much, out of 16 days we had to pay for 14 days usage, almost $140.

!!!!! I will be very careful! Does it automatically cancel if you dont' accept to renew the period, or does it keep running until you cancel?
