what is an e-ticket ride?

I heard that the Little Mermaid ride and the Cars ride in 2012 will be e-ticket ride but what does that mean?

Thanks!

Disneyland used to issue ticket books and the tickets were labeled A-E. E-ticket rides are the "most special" (most popular) rides from the ticket book and from my childhood recollection - you only ever got a few of those and tons of the A and B tickets. So, you had to plan your E-ticket rides very carefully, because you certainly wanted to be able to ride your favorite one. ;)

Here's a sample of what the ticket books used to look like. You could buy different types books. We always got the Deluxe that had the most tickets, including a pass to get in the parks, and "free" tickets for sponsored attractions like 'Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln' and 'Circlevision.'

There were only 5 E-tickets, so you had to really plan on which rides you would go on

Now the term "E-ticket" means the best and most fun. (Like in the days I used to go C&W dancing all the time. There was a guy I used to call the E-ticket dancer. :thumbsup2 )

I love this! Wonder what an A ticket ride would be? The Teacups?

Brady's Mom got it right. I too remember those dumb ticket books from my childhood. Dumb in that there were never enough E and D tickets and way too many A, B and C. When you left DL you always had lots of A's and B's left over and ran out of E's and D's.

Around 1980 DL started offering passports in parallel to ticket books which gave unlimited access to rides. Then the ticket books were dropped.

The qualification of E-ticket has changed over time. As Brady's Mom said E-tickets were most special. Back in the 60's Small World was considered E-ticket because of the elaborate use of animatronics. Today examples of E-tickets are Space Mtn, Splash Mtn, Indiana Jones, California Screamin, Tower of Terror, etc. Small World is no longer considered E-ticket. Maybe D or even C. The recent Monster's Inc ride at DCA is a good example of a C ticket.

Since ticket books were dropped some 25 years ago, it is entirely subjective what is an E-ticket. For example, the new Toy Story Midway Mania is considered to be a solid D-ticket.

I have heard the Little Mermaid may be more of a D-ticket while the Cars Land Racers will be E-ticket level like Test Track at Epcot.

So that is a long answer to your short question. :goodvibes

Teacups were C tickets, if I remember correctly. A tickets were the Carrousel and the cars on Main Street, and maybe the Sleeping Beauty Walkthrough. B tix were Swiss Family Treehouse. Storybook Land Canal Boats were D tickets.

Wow thanks so much for posting these!

Are these yours or did you find them on the internet??

Seeing the ticket required for Adventure through inner space jogged my memory. I had remembered it being a free ride so I looked it up. From 1967 to 1977 Monsanto sponsered it and it was free. After that it required a ticket. Thanks for the memories!

I got them off of the Internet. We used up all of ours. Luckily for me, my parents never threw away the A & B tickets we never used (even had a few C's) and just tossed them in a drawer. When DL went to the all-day pass I was able to get 4 free admissions because we had so many tickets. (Thanks, Mom & Dad :) ).

I KNEW there was another free attraction. I couldn't remember it. Thanks. :)

And do you remember ....

This question makes be proud to be "of and age" to remember the ride tickets!:goodvibes

Little Mermaid will be Haunted Mansion-style Omnimover attraction with advanced AA's as used in Tokyo Disneyland's Winnie the Pooh and Monster's Inc. rides, both of which are solid E-Ticket attractions.

I think even Disney is advertising Little Mermaid as the next E-Ticket. It's about time Disney returned to the classic, elaborate thematic dark ride.

Not sure if it's funny or sad that I got a little adreniline rush when I saw MaryJo's pictures of the ticket books. Memories of childhood. :wizard:

Wow, I never knew these ticket books existed. I thought it had always been a passport. I'm gonna ask my parents about it. Very interesting, thanks for the stories.

Side note, my girls were asking the other day about which rides they were going to get on, cause they were assuming we had to buy individual tickets, and that they would have to pick and choose. I laughed and told them, no, that we were paying a lot of money to go, and that you just pay to get in, and then ride whatever you want. Guess their assumption wasn't so far fetched as I thought!

What a great list to post! Thanks so much!

I've heard the phrase "E-Ticket" being used with new rides to mean they will be insanely popular and will have Fast Pass machines. Don't know if it's just a handful of people reusing a term or if it's internal.

That was my favorite part of the ride! :lovestruc

Somewhere in a box of junk, in my parent's attic, I have a partially used book of tickets with A's and B's left in it.

I also remember when they began to switch over to a one fee for the park deal. You could choose if you wanted to buy a ticket book, or you could buy an all day pass. We got the all day pass and I thought that was so cool! We pinned them to our shirts so all you had to do was walk on the ride because they saw your pass. No more counting tickets! I still have the Minnie Mouse pin that I used to pin it onto my shirt.

So MJ, your obsession is genetic!;)

Yup! Mom loved Disney, too. My daughter is a 3rd generation Disney lover.

Great list!! Look how many are gone (italics). I remember planning which ones we'd want to go on. My dad used to donate his tickets to my brother & me so we could go on more attractions.

Each ticket was worth a certain value, like A tickets were 10 cents, and so on. Some trivia -- look at Storybook Land Canal Boats - the lighthouse used to be a ticket booth, and at Alice in Wonderland there is an old ticket booth there, too. :)

What a great list to post! Thanks so much!

I've heard the phrase "E-Ticket" being used with new rides to mean they will be insanely popular and will have Fast Pass machines. Don't know if it's just a handful of people reusing a term or if it's internal.

I think this would be an example how Disney influenced a lot of us who have been going to the parks since the earlier days. I use E-ticket to mean anything that is a lot of fun/exciting, etc., and have heard others use that term on occasion.

'E-ticket ride' or 'E-ticket attraction' is kind of one of those terms that has transcended its original context or realm and seeped into everyday language to apply to other things which are totally unrelated to Disney. I have heard other people use that phrase when referring to things that have nothing to do with Disneyland or WDW.

I remember how annoying it was to run out of the C, D or E tickets and constantly have to go back to the random booths that were scattered around Disneyland to get more of them, but seemingly having an abundance of those darn A tickets! Then again, my grandmother and her church friends liked all of the rides on the A tickets, so theirs would never go to waste. It was such an innovative concept to have a Passport. When the Passports replaced the ticket books, it was really progressive and exciting, and it simplified and streamlined things so much. Then again, gone were the lovely days of getting into Disneyland for $13.00 or whatever crazy amount it was, but we had to roll with the times.

I still have some of my old ticket books in a memento box somewhere. I had always planned on doing something with them but I didn't want to paste them into a scrapbook and ruin their value (that is my old collector/seller mentality from the '90s kicking in).
