What happens to points if you cancel a reservation?

We are not canceling a reservation but I am curious as to how it works. Do the points just go back to available points?

Depends when you cancel.

If you cancel 31 days or more out, points go back into your account as they are in the reservation -- current use year points stay current, banked points remain banked and borrowed points remain borrowed. The issue then becomes whether you can use those banked or borrowed points before the end of the use year, and whether you can bank the current year points (only if you are more than four months from end of use year).

If you cancel 30 days or less before date of arrival all points go into a holding account and all must be used by end of current use year, and you can use them only when trying to reserve 60 days or less from date of arrival.
