Well, we can sure tell the school season has started again.....Update, page 8 # 143

I agree this sounds good in theory but the exterior doors are opening and closing all the time. Classes going to recess or outside to do a science experiment or lesson, teachers cutting between parts of the building outside to get a breath of fresh air on their walk, classes on brain breaks, PE having their class in a grassy area due to nice weather, employees leaving the building through different doors, etc. We also have students who elope and will run to a door and open it, most of the time for show and they don't really leave the building but other times zipping right out while being chased.

I know we can lock it way down and no one leaves the building from 7:20 to 3:20. Parents would lose their mind about no recess though, they fought and won a mandatory 15 minute brain break each day where students are taken outside or do a physical activity like dancing in the building. That's on top of recess and lunch and a specials class like art, music, or PE.
Our buildings are locked up and you need to be buzzed in, but folks are leaving all of the time (employees, visitors, students).

Another garbage thread on the community board. Shouldn't this be over in that other place.

Curiosity just to see why a political controversial topic wasn’t on the political controversial forum.
I would not exactly say I’ve participated.

So you didn’t think a school shooting by another mentally ill kid would become turn into a second amendment conversation and turn political. Come on now ..,
DC, please don't derail a good, non-political thread that's been running nicely for 5 days now. It's not garbage, it's not political, it's not controversial (unless some try to steer and make it so). It's a news event discussion that many people care about. Not everybody, but many.

I’ve seen many anti second amendment posts. To me that screams political. To you it may not because you agree. That’s why I asked. You can’t have it both ways. Not trying to derail it just surprised you posted it here when they opened up a whole other forum to discuss the 2A.

I was laughing at the posters last two sentences. Totally over the top and ridiculous.
If you personally have an issue with this thread, your better option is to report it instead of participating in it.

Lets not feed the trolls who are trying to sabotage a good conversation into the being moved to the restricted forum. If they want to argue and get ugly over there let them, I would hope folks could have good conversation HERE in Community about what is impacting our children, our teachers and our communities.

I haven't seen this thread veer into the political. Just the usual discussion about the 2A and those discussing the problems with guns. No political discussion at all as far as "sides" go politically nor have I even read much in the way of controversy with this particular event.
Exactly.

We have all come together on this thread. Perhaps offering different solutions and viewpoints. But all of our hearts are in the same place.

I agree.

But the Controversial boards isn't as wild west as one might think 😉

I thought so much about this as I walked the halls of my elementary school yesterday. The shooter training in itself is traumatizing as I've written about in another thread. But going into multiple classrooms daily in my role and imagining being with these different age groups as shots ring out is too much. I think about helping 5 year olds barricade the door and putting hard objects into their little hands to throw at a gunman if he breaks through. I think about my older kids, 10 or 11, who would know what was happening and be terrified as they push the furniture and crawl under anything that hides them, yet some would end up being heroes who save others. It's heartbreaking. But enjoy your (general your) guns and ammo and militias, I'm sure it makes you feel protected and safe.
What about that Avatar. Not political at all:rolleyes1

Quit trying to steer it political to meet your needs.

Move along now....

I went to Catholic School.
We were not allowed to have backpacks, we were required to use the official uniform bookbag.
It was made of canvas w/2 strong handles but couldn't be closed & it wasn't very deep.
The textbooks & notebooks got heavier by the minute lugging them all day long.

We were not allowed to access our lockers in between classes,
even if we walked by them 6 times a day.
There were teachers monitoring the halls and you'd get demerits for opening your locker,
then you'd be late to class which would earn you more demerits, etc.
Virtually no one attempted to access their locker during the day.

I realize many middle and high schools in the USA have thousands of students.
But, in the smaller schools perhaps they could implement something like the school I went to.
It only took one teacher on one end of the hall, one on the other end,
and one at an intersection in the middle.
They were the same teachers that then went in & taught their class,
no extra personnel needed.

Another idea is clear backpacks.

My last comment is, in case anyone missed it, the school we're all talking about
used panic buttons worn by most of the staff, I believe.
That is why the 2 resource officers were able to get to the shooter within minutes.
And, I'll point out that they ran to the gun!

Sorry, don't like either idea. I can't imagine requiring students to carry every book and notebook for every class the entire day. And what about the kids who bring their lunch? They need to carry that too? I guess the lockers are only good for coats?

Clear backpacks were a thing when our kids were little (so ~20 years ago). I remember the complaints about students needing to carry "necessary" items that would not necessarily be good for others to see.

This is how it was in my secondary school in Ireland and as far as I'm aware it has not changed. We had a cloak room for coats, no one had lockers. We carried our books for the entire day. We also didnt have a canteen or lunch room facilities. We had to leave the school building at lunch time.

This is normal in Ireland in Primary and secondary schools. In Primary school we brought packed lunches and ate at our desks.

If they were to do that again, I could see allowing a small make-up bag type pouch inside the clear backpack. - Hides those items from view, but not a big automatic weapon.

I graduated in 2001 and that’s how it was for us also. No going to lockers between class, carrying everything you need all day. I think we were allowed to go before and/or after lunch but I can’t remember.

I still think it's a stupid rule. So then kids are bringing backpacks to classes?
