Wearing compression stockings in the parks? My DH is self-conscious.

My husband was diagnosed with a DVT last summer, and things are going fine now. However, he really needs to wear knee-high compression stockings or his legs swell and ache. His vascular surgeon and hematologist both told him to plan on wearing compression stockings on at least the DVT leg for the rest of his life.

DH is 41. We are planning on going to WDW again next June. He is embarrassed to wear shorts because of the compression stockings. Please tell me that NO ONE is going to laugh or make fun of him because he has a medical need to wear the stockings on his legs while walking through the parks. I have told him that no one will care, but he seems to think we will spend every day in the parks surrounded by jeering crowds pointing at his legs. I don't want him to swelter in jeans every day in June because he is so self-conscious about the stockings.

Today he said "Maybe you can check on that Disney forum you're always one, see what they think about it." So, would you guys laugh at a nice nerdy 41 year old man with knee high nude compression stockings on his legs at Disney World?

I wouldn't even take a second look! Truly, tell him not to waste one second worrying about it. :)

Honestly, I don't think people will be paying that much attention to even notice. And really, if anyone is rude enough to say anything, his health is much more important than anyone's opinion! Blood clots are nothing to play around with!

Tell him not to worry about it! "We're" all too concerned about what "we" look like to worry about someone else.

Good luck!

My mother had to wear these and she was also self conscious. At first the doctors supplied her with white ones but i quickly went online and found them in nude color. This made it less obvious that she was wearing them. I certainly would not make fun of anyone wearing these and have to believe most people are on the same page as me.

Tell him not to worry about it for be second, I doubt anyone would even notice. And not to be rude-- but has he SEEN what some people wear at the parks? I hardly think something discreet worn for medical reasons will get made fun of :)

I know. He just has this mental image he can't shake of people laughing at him. I told him we are NOT in high school. He said "What will people think?"

I told him, "They'll think you have a medical reason that means you need to wear those socks, like many other people also do. And I am 99.9% sure we walked past other people wearing those things with shorts and were so busy enjoying our time at Disney that we never even noticed."

I mean seriously. Lovenox injections, scans, warfarin every day with all side effects, every change in medication or diet having to be carefully monitored, the many health risks involved with a DVT...and his big worry is a pair of SOCKS?!? :confused3

Hope you'll soon Be well again.Have a good journey

Tell him to not worry at all about this. My hubby has to wear them too when he's standing a lot. He doesn't always wear them at WDW but he has. NOBODY is going to look at you. People are too busy having a good time to worry about what someone else has on. I do agree with the last poster in that the white ones stand out more. Just buy nude or dark ones to match your skin tone. These really do "blend in" more. No worries!!

Enjoy The Magic!!

His socks are the nude color, and fairly close to his own skin color. Maybe I'm just used to them, I don't even notice them. Well, I do when he hangs the dirty ones over the TV to let me know they need washed.

I mean, I wore CROCS in the parks and it doesn't get much more embarrassing than those :rotfl:

I saw several people (2 of them men) wearing the white ones with shorts on our trip last year ... and a couple of ladies wearing the nude ones. The white ones do stand out more - I only noticed the nude ones because the ladies happened to be in line next to us.

Please tell your DH that his health is way more important than what anyone else might think or say ... and if he notices anyone staring, tell him to just smile wide and wink. ;)

Seriously though, with all that walking ... go, wear the hose, and enjoy yourself! :goodvibes

Exactly what I was thinking! :thumbsup2

no worries...you're in Florida. Thousands of people in Florida wearing compression socks. We're all used to seeing them, even people wearing them with swimming suits at the beach, golfing, grocery shopping...everywhere. If you're going to wear compression socks in public anywhere, Florida is the right place to start. Old & young people here know what they are for:thumbsup2

For the most part, people do not pay near as much attention to us as we think they will.

That being said, please.....hug your husband from this Dis'er and tell him I'm glad he is here to go to Disney in his stocking.

Thanks - will do. The truth of it is, his DVT was misdiagnosed as a Baker's cyst back in March of 2010. He dealt with pain and swelling in that leg from March 2010 until June 2011 when it was found on a scan. We FLEW to WDW in March 2011 and he had an undiagnosed clotting disorder and an untreated DVT :scared1:. Believe me, I am very thankful how things turned out.

If you have any symptoms of a possible DVT, don't stop until a doctor scans your entire leg, from groin to ankle. These things are misdiagnosed all the time, and my husband is fortunate to have survived with only a little damage in some valves and a couple of varicose veins. Of course, because the clot, which is from his groin to his knee, was untreated all that time it is now probably permanently lodged in his vein and will cause aching, swelling, and the formation of varicose veins from now on. If he'd been properly diagnosed in the beginning, the warfarin probably would have dissolved the clot. Still, sometimes I wake up at night freaked by what could have happened between early 2010 and June 2011...especially flying to Orlando and back in March of last year.

I'm guessing he's really into shorts then? If he is really freaked out and can't get over the idea, he could invest in some nice, thin, breathable pants. Then he wouldn't have to worry at all. Anything in a Poplin/Cotton/Linen would be just as comfortable in the June heat as shorts.

Really, no one is going to be looking at him long enough to notice. Most people are to preoccupied with their own families to notice anyone else (I've been run over/into by plenty of people walking/driving/running there to attest to that:rotfl:)

People are so absorbed in their own families and the magic of the parks they don't pay any attention to people around them (unless they are obnoxious). Besides, who does he know there besides you? Just Thank God he has two healthy legs to put stockings on. That is all that really matters. If you want to make him feel better, wear something more embarassing than him, it will distract him from the stockings. :lmao:

As a runner's I wear compression socks all the time. If you go on a race weekend, most people in the parks will be wearing them. No big deal. :)

First, his health is the most important thing.

Second, I guarantee that there will be MANY people there who are wearing MUCH more embarrassing clothing items than him. ;)

Paint black mickey heads all over them and people will think he is just really into disney. If you really loved him, you (and everyone else in your party) would wear them too. :lmao:

Seriously, have you seen some of the outfits people wear?
Tan compression stocking are very benign!
