Just did a cruise in the Med See with Virgin on the Scarlet Lady. This is not to say if Disney or Virgin is better overall, just some info for anyone looking at alternative cruise lines.

Keep in mind, Virgin is adults only so if you have kids to take with you, nothing to see here.

Cruise fare includes basic wifi, soft drinks, tea, coffee, etc... alcohol and specialty coffee/teas was extra. Specialty restaurants also included but they did have some items that were extra.

Food was better on Virgin. They had a food court with lots of options during the day and multiple specialty restaurants for dinner. The food court had all day breakfast, burgers, fries, sushi, ramen noodles, salads, soups, etc.. the variety was very refreshing. There was also a pizza place that did made to order pizzas (very good!). The specialty restaurants were Mexican, Italian, Steak, Korean BBQ and a few others. You had to make reservations ahead of time for each one. They did accept walk-ins but sure there was a wait for that. Restaurants served the same menu each night. The food court had a dinner option every night as well. Some restaurants were open for breakfast, too but we found the Galley (food court) to be very good for breakfast so we didn't try them. Most of the Galley food stations closed late at night but there was one that was open 24 hours. Drink stations were also open 24 hours. Room service was available but it cost $7 unless you ordered something that cost much then it was free. We didn't try it.

I did miss not having the same wait staff every night, mainly because I find it fun getting to know your waiters.

Disney shows are much better. Virgin shows were quite amateurish compared to Disney, though we did enjoy a couple of them. Also no movie theaters so if you like to watch movies, you are out of luck except for on your room TV.

Disney had a lot more options for activities during the day, but there was enough to keep us busy if we wanted.

Rooms were interesting... you used a tablet to control everything, TV, lights, curtains, etc... you also used the tablet to request laundry, towels, and room cleaning. Rooms were a bit smaller and did not have enough storage space in our opinion. We used the tablet to request laundry service and towels one day and they literally knocked on our door within 2 minutes(!). There was a hammock on our terrace that my wife loved.

Disney pool area is better. You cannot swim at all in Virgin pools. The "deep" area of the pool is so small all you can do is bob up and down.

There were a lot more places to lounge around, especially on the back of the boat.

Service was very good overall, maybe not quite as over the top as Disney but we had no complaints.

Unlike Disney, you could order soft drinks in the bars/nightclubs at no additional cost. That always annoyed me with Disney.

Much more of a party atmosphere on Virgin but it wasn't crazy either. You didn't have drunk people running through the halls. There was a casino but it was small and tucked away. We only walked through it to get to a couple of shows.

I wouldn't say it was better or worse than Disney. There were some things we liked better on Virgin and vice versa on Disney. But we did like it enough that we booked a 16 day Panama Canal cruise for 2026, right before we found out that Disney was also doing one in 2026.

I will try to answer any questions.

It also includes gratuities. And with that, even includes gratuities on drinks. If you buy a $10 drink, it's $10, not $11.80 after 18%.

We were just on Valiant Lady and the room service charge was $5. One thing I liked. If you ordered a beer, everything else was included and you could charge that beer to your bar tab. Also, they will bring you something like 15 cans of Diet Coke if you ask (don't ask how I know...)

Did you go to see Duel Reality (did they have that on your ship?)

Enjoyed the review. We love both VV and DCL!

Thanks for the information! :thumbsup2

As a die hard DCL fan, I have to say from all I have seen of Virgin, it has piqued my interest, but I haven't been sure if it's a little too different for me. From your post, I'm thinking I really would like it. I will have to look into it at some point but currently have 4 Disney cruises booked for the next 2 years. :rotfl:

Terrific info! We are taking our first Virgin cruise in November because my mom wanted to try it. We have been on all the Disney ships, so size of ship isn't really something we care about. But food and entertainment definitely are!

I've been worried that we are too old for the "vibe"--hearing other people talk about the types of music in the clubs and bars. I don't mind current music, but I also enjoy going to the Disney lounges and listening to the dueling pianos play a variety of stuff or even 70s-90s hours.

We're late 40s and my mom and her husband are mid to late-60s. Are there bands/pianists/DJs that would be playing music that we would all 4 enjoy?

How was the price point? Similar to Disney, or lower/higher? approx...
For us doing a 4 day in their suite level, it is MUCH less than Disney concierge. Like a little more than half what we pay for 2 of us on Disney. I'm not sure if it's because of time of year or itinerary, but it was much less than we pay for Disney but more than we pay for Royal Caribbean. For about the same size room and perks/free alcohol.

1-Bedroom Concierge $27490

XL Sea Terrace $5766
RockStar Suite $10600
Mega RockStar Suite (Massive Suite, their largest one) $22052

You'll be fine. I'm doing my 3rd Virgin cruise in August. I'm 62 and this one will be with my 38 yr old daughter for her birthday. There is plenty of areas to listen to music. They usually have several different bands, duo, etc. Although, I love the 70's party, and I also like some good dance music. You can also rent a private karaoke room, if you like that stuff.

And the VV price includes gratuities, the DCL price does not

Of the daily activities they did run, what sort were they..? I freely admit the main issue we had on RCCL was the lack of daytime activities. Couple that with ho hum evening shows and I'm not sure I wouldn't be longing too much for things to DO. We spent a LOT of time in the pool on RCCL but seems like thats not much of an option here either. Hmm.

I frequent a lot of cruise forums and FB groups, and VV seems to have outsize appeal to DCL cruisers. I wouldn't have expected VV and DCL market segments to overlap as much as they appear to.
Maybe not a coincidence? I think I just read in another thread that the Chairmen of the Board and just retired CEO of VV was a former exec at DCL.

I haven't sailed Virgin (yet) but one thing I like is that their crew has more freedom how they dress / wear their hair etc. And that Virgin gives their crew free wifi. They have a 4 star rating on glassdoor.

Happy crew = happy guests (or at least it helps 😉)

They are definitely cheaper, especially after you consider some of the perks we got for being Disney Platinum. $600 bar tab credit, free laundry, early boarding time... though I think the $600 bar tab was a promotional thing.

They had a few trivia games and puzzle contests. They are really big on fitness so there was a lot of fitness classes... bungee, yoga, bicycling, etc...

There was an arcade (completely free) with old games like Defender, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, etc... since that's from my childhood, I spent a bit of time in there. :-)
