I know/am surrounded by people from all walks of life and the one constant is that poor people and middle class people and even upper middle class people all spend way more than they should/have. Across the board people are financially illiterate. I wish public schools would have mandatory courses on it throughout the country. If I ever talk to a teen or someone looking to get their first job I yell ROTH IRA into their faces and they look at me like I'm nuts. A bit of an exaggeration but really I tell young people if you start saving and investing from now you'll be the rich friend later in life and all your friends will wish they did what you did. It's hard to have that foresight when young...unless you come from a financially literate family...like the basis of that book Rich Dad, Poor Dad.
Now I’m picturing Darth Vader in Mickey ears telling a high school assembly in his Darth Vader voice “ROTH… IRAAAA”

Shh…we don’t have one. My husband also just puts enough in the 403b to max the match, but no more. He uses the money in a trading account that gives him more freedom in investment. He is very good at it for an IT guy. Same for the money the kids inherited from their aunt & uncle; it’s not in a 529 because of the investment limitations. But that isn’t for everyone because their trades may not do better than funds offered.

My town now has a mandatory finance class for graduation. I do joke that for the most part it’ll probably be obvious things and that my kid will just have her AirPods in the entire class.

We bought our house 14 years ago in our late twenties and made sure that we bought one that we could still afford the mortgage payment if one of us lost our jobs. At the time, we definitely could have gotten a much bigger house but we both felt that our raised ranch on 1/2 acre was enough for us and our golden. It has the BEST yard for dogs! My MIL was less than enthused that we chose to go smaller versus the big MacMansions that she envisioned us to buy but she's not the one paying. When rates fell, we refinanced our mortgage and all our extra savings each month gets rolled into buying S&P 500 index funds. I also have to pay into the state pension fund since I'm a teacher along with a state mandated 403B. In addition, I also have a separate 403B that I put a % of my paycheck each pay period. My hubs is in the private sector working in finance and puts away even more than me. When my son was born, we started a 529 account for him right away and started investing in S&P index funds for him.

I'm very intrigued by the FIRE concept but definitely can't live frugal enough to retire in my 40s. I'm hoping late 50s at this point since we opted to send our 4 year old to private school starting at pre-K. I want to live life a little (go to Disney/travel, drive my BMWs, and eat out) but still be conscious of making sure my savings are there for retirement/emergency funds. I may like nice things but we always research a ton before big purchases along with trying to find the best deal/discount available. CC points have helped a lot too with travel expenses. Every dollar saved is a dollar for retirement!

Does anyone have experience dealing with a damaged Disney gift card?

I ordered online from Staples, and one of my orders had those eco-friendly cards that feel like cardboard. When I removed the sticky stuff that covers the PIN, part of the card with half of the numbers came off with it, such that I am not able to reveal the PIN.

I called the phone number on the back of the card, and they gave me an email address to contact. It has been over a week, and I have gotten no response from them at all or even an automated acknowledgment that my messages were received.

Should I just call Staples and see if they will help me?

I did that once. I was told it can still be used at a place that scans them. You just can’t use it online or combine it on the giftcard site since you can’t enter the number. I just hung onto it and used it at the first restaurant I went to. So if no one gets back to you don’t worry you can still use it.

Do not call Staples. They delivered the merchandise, you broke it. There is nothing they can do but they might muddy the water of you fixing it.

You aren’t the first so don’t beat yourself up too bad here. From Page 1.
Fair Warning: Cardboard Disney Gift CardOn the new designs, do not attempt to remove the security tape, scratch them off gently. 4/26/23 Post #15803Solution with Scandit App :thumbsup2
Scandit will only get you the gc number, not the security code. Do you have silver part you tore off? Another option is to attempt to lay it out on like a piece of paper and scratch it gently like a gc to display the numbers. Last option is use it in person. They can scan it.

Ha same 14 years ago...early 30s though lol. But yeah we almost bought our first home at the height of the market right before the 08 crash but luckily I listened to my wife and we bailed and rented instead. Then in 2010 we got a great price on a smaller house than we could afford but we were fine living within to slightly under our means. It's helped us out tremendously because we got to save and travel and enjoy using our money for years for fun instead of tying it up in a house payment. We're later in life parents so now we don't do as much...just Disney lol so it was nice that we got to spend that money when we did and honestly our "smallish" house is just fine. Also a fellow 403b here lol.

Our school district required a financial course the year after my DD25 graduated. I insisted that she take one in college. I think it has helped because she is very frugal. FWIW, we started a Roth IRA for her when she started working as a teen. We matched her salary as a gift to her until she finally hit the maximum and now we contribute the maximum to her account. We've started her off early and I hope that once she graduates from grad school and gets a real job she'll pick up where we leave off.

Someone else just had that happen to them and they solved it:

I'm really curious here. I've never heard anyone knock a Roth due to investment limitations. Are there specific types of assets that your husband can't utilize in a Roth? Even if that's true, are those investments really so productive that they're beating what you could invest in inside a Roth even after accounting for the tax drag? That seems extremely difficult to me, but I'm all ears!

I know that 529s are oftentimes significantly more limited in their investment options (ours is), but again, the tax aspects make those extremely compelling.

He’s a more active trader that mostly utilizes options. Used to have more crypto, but he got out of most of it after making a lot. As it is, with his new job we no longer qualify for a Roth.

I agree! We've explored building our dream home a couple of times and each time, we realized that we do not want to be house poor or start all over again with paying down a mortgage. Our current house has plenty of room for the 3 of us plus the dog. We're always in each other's space anyways so its not like a bigger house will do much for us lol.
