Travel cancellation insurance

Can anyone recommend a travel insurance company for trip cancellation? This would be for domestic travel. At times, we will rent a condo from an owner in Orlando who prefer personal checks over the credit cards. We would just like to have the added protection.

Are you interested in "Cancel for Any Reason" Insurance? And/or are you concerned the individual owner will cancel on this Cancel for Any Reason insurance is typically fairly expensive and bundled with other comprehensive travel insurance. I have bought it before for trips to Europe to protect non refundable expensive airfare purchases (my splurge on premium economy seats that were about 50% of my vacation costs).

I would recommend looking at policies on one of these sites (Squaremouth or Insure my Trip). And call the knowledgable agents here who are great for helping you find what they offer that is as close as possible to what you are looking for to make sure what you are looking for is covered. Here are the website links:

The agents are really great and feel free to call them right away if the sites seem overwhelming to navigate. They can help.

Usually you have to buy the insurance quite soon after your first deposit. Also typically you only get 50 or 75 percent of your monies back if you cancel for any reason, but 100% back for certain covered reasons.

When you see the costs though I at least often decide to just self insure. I've looked into this more than one time, but I only decided to purchase it for that one European trip.

Sometimes too rather than buy insurance for condo rentals and things like that I rent from a Superhosts on Air B and B or Premier Hosts on VRBO that offers a more generous cancelation policy than individual owners too to lower my risks. And rental platforms like Redweek offer the option to buy insurance from a third party too if you are doing a condo rental on that platform. Those are a few other options that lower your risks on individual condo rentals.

Thank you so much for this good advice. Actually, I’m looking for something that would be health related. A fall, an illness at the last minute. For years we have rented from owners at VRBO and now rent directly with them. So, I think we’d have to buy independent insurance for something like that. Definitely follow up on your suggestions.

The 2 links posted by @kathy884 are a great place to start. Once you find something that looks like what you want, I highly recommend calling and speaking to an agent to discuss your specifics. It sounds like you are doing a direct rental from an owner, rather than through a business, so that may be handled differently. I've found they are quite willing to explain and make sure the policy you purchase will cover your concerns. You don't want to buy insurance and then later find out it excludes something important to you.
