Tipping Question/Opinion

This is my paranoia speaking, but there are places like Papa John's and a few local places with online ordering portals that have a tip section when you order online for pickup. While I'd normally tip for delivery, pickup is kind of odd. Still, they can see if you tip or not, so I can't help but wonder if I'll be coming home with a "sneezer" if I don't tip some on a pickup.
This would just make me order delivery instead of pickup. If I have to tip to ensure I don’t get tampered food, I might as well make it convenient for myself and have it delivered, where I would have tipped anyway.

This place used to be a regular brewery/bar. The moved about a year & a half ago into this new location and at this point went to the self service. So previously under the traditional service, I would tip, no questions. At first I tipped just like I normally would but then most recently just wondered what the heck am I tipping for. Especially when the majority of the time I don't get any food and the "service" I receive is less than what I receive at a fast food restaurant.

Yeah, under this scenario, I wouldn’t be tipping. Tipping should involve some sort of service provided. In a TS restaurant, that service is taking your order and bringing you your food, refilling your drinks as needed, providing information regarding the food and any specials. In this case, you are simply making a transaction like you would with a cashier at your local grocery store. I don’t allow myself to be guilted into tipping in situations like this.

For the record, I do tip generously in restaurants, for luggage handling, for housekeeping, and other traditionally tipped activities. But I draw the line at tipping where no service is provided or where I am doing the work myself.

I do believe that in many of these cases, the software they are using includes a tip section where it either didn’t before, or it wasn’t activated before. That is the only explanation I can come up with for the self checkout at the grocery store asking how much the customer wants to tip. . .

I wouldn’t tip. Tipping has gotten out of control.
We have a place near us that we order from regularly. It’s very similar to Panera bread.
They don’t offer delivery but can place an order online for pick up. The last screen auto defaults to a 15% tip for pick up orders. You can change it to any percentage you want including a zero tip but it annoys me everytime I order from there.

I am so over the tipping just to tip fad. I if I go to a restaurant and the server takes my order & delivers my food they are in the range for about at 18-20% tip. If a food runner drops my food off and has to ask who ordered what, I knock off about 5%. If I have to ask or or push my glass to edge of the table so that they notice that I need a refill that's another 5%. In my State there is no restaurant wage so minimum wage is about $16.50 that's already a good wage, service needs to be solid for a 20% tip these days.

Edit: To add if I order at a counter, pick up and/or serve myself (think 5 guys) I don't tip as there was no service. Cleaning up, is not a service in my view.

After this week I decided to no longer supplement an employee's income with my income when their company should be paying them a fair wage.

Moving forward unless it requires a license to provide or I am receiving full table service I'm starting at $0 and only changing my mind if I feel it's warranted.

Not to address the OPs issue, but I saw strange today. We had dinner at a 50s style diner. We actually got there early & there was only 1 other party there. We were sat by the hostess immediately. We waited at about 6 - 7 minutes before a server came over to greet us, even tho 2 hostess & at least 3 other employees were chatting & joking behind the counter. She barely checked on us after serving our food so we left about 15% on the table. We normally tip 20%but the service just didn’t warrant it.

At this place you bring your check to the counter & the hostess cashes you out. I noticed a large tip jar next to the register with 2 notes on it. First one said “tips in this jar are for the cooks & kitchen staff only”. The 2nd one said “credit card tips go to hostesses & busses, not to servers”. 🤯 I mean What??!! They really expect different 3 tips??? The hostess walked us 8 feet to a table & makes a few dollars change. What on earth would I tip her for. We had put our silverware & paper napkins on our plates which the server had removed when she dropped off the bill. There were 2 soda glasses left in the table. What am I tipping a busser for?? And the management should be paying the cooks a fair wage already. What if people had only a CC & no cash, their server wouldn’t get a tip??
