How much do you typically tip at a nail salon? I always feel that no matter what I leave for a tip, the nail tech is never that happy. :scratchin I tried a new place last night. I tipped 5 bucks for a 22 dollar service. Normally I would have tipped another dollar or even two, but this girl bounced between me and another lady. I didn't have an appt. so it didn't bother me too much.

The sign on the wall said that a 18-20 % tip is customary, at your descretion and greatly appreciated. :scratchin Not so sure appreciated!! I have been to several different ones over the years and no one ever seems appreciative even the techs that I tend to go to the most. I feel like I tip good, but maybe not. :confused3 I got a new set of acrylics last night. I had taken about 3 months off and decided to try another salon since the last one I went to....added in a tip after I also gave HER A CASH TIP. :scared1: So someone at work goes to the one I went to last night and I decided to try it.

When I get a pedicure, I usually tip 20% too. I am just curious as to what others tip.

Well $5 is more than 20% she the tech should be happy. I just tipped $10 for my mani/pedi at a place last week and she seems very happy. I would not go to a place that had a sign about tipping. If I was you I would keep looking for a place.

I would say that most places around here have some sort of tipping sign. Sometimes it just says that you must tip in cash.

As a person who accepts tips in a similar fashion as a nail technician I always show appreciation for my tips. However it's never much more than a thank you and a smile. I'm really not sure how people expect me to react to tips.

It's nice that you SMILE :thumbsup2. I can honestly say that most do not and they always act like I should have left more. I mean...that is how it seems to me.

I've never been to a place that had a sign about tipping.

Maybe you're just insecure that you're not tipping enough so expect them to act annoyed. When I had my nails done regularly (now I do my own) I tipped $3-7 depending on the service(s) performed. I went to the same place every 2-3 weeks, they knew me very well. I always had great service and left a tip accordingly, they didn't actually acknowledge the tips at all, just told me thanks and waved when I headed out the door.

I am a dance instructor, I do private lessons sometimes and I have never been tipped on top of my standard fee. If I got a tip I'd be thrilled and would be thankful but would say Thank You in a calm manner.

PS, I think your tip amount is sufficient.

I think you tipped plenty. It sounds like you went to a walk in place? As annoying as making appointments can be, I stick to the appointment only salons. I HATE being rushed and those places always do. The price difference isn't much and you can get the attention you deserve. I usually round to the nearest 5 when I tip, so you're good. Ironically, I have an appointment for a mani pedi after work today!

A smile is more than I usually get. I think a smile is plenty...anything more might get weird. :P

Where I live we have a zillion nail salons. I mean really.....they are everywhere. I would say that every one I have been to... except ONE has some sort of tipping sign. It might say NO tipping on CC. OR Cash Tips only.....or some friendly reminder to tip for great service blah blah blah. I did go to one for quite a long while, but the girl I liked quit and moved to another location. She wanted her clients to follow her there. It was just too far to keep driving to so I stopped going there in Nov. Nonetheless, I will tip my usual 20% and not take it personally if the tech seems annoyed or less than thrilled. LOL

I always pay with a credit card. The nail salon I go to has a credit card machine that automatically prints out at the bottom how much a 18% and a 20% tip would be. They have a sign on the window that says 'No Checks' so almost everyone pays with a credit card and the credit card receipt shows how much to tip. The most listed is 20% though, so I assume that's what everyone tips and what the techs expect. They always say 'thank you very much' and smile.

What is it that they're doing that makes you think they're not happy with the tip? Are they scowling at you? Are they commenting?

I tip between 18-20%...for an $18 regular fill I pay her $21 & for a $23 French manicure & fill I pay $28. I always give her an extra $20 bill at Christmas. I see other people tipping less & others tipping more, I do what I'm comfortable with.

I'm a PT receptionist at nail salon. We don't have a sign up about tipping. Tips seem to vary between nothing and $5. Very rarely do I see anyone tip over $5, even for $50 and up services which I find insulting when a tech spends an hour on a service, but we never ever comment and the only mention of a tip is a line where they can write it in if they want to on the receipt.

Personally I would tip based on how pleased you are with the service.

I tip 20%. period. end. For food, for delivery, for nails. If they don't like it then I will take my business elsewhere. I think 20% is plenty.

My salon is the same way. The debit card receipt shows the percentage amount for 15% and 20% tip. I have a French manicure and always tip 20% for service. Same for a pedicure.

Sometimes no thank you!! Sometimes they look at the money and just have a look that doesn't seem appreciative. Not every tech has done this every single time but most just seem preoccupied, rushing and just not happy. Maybe they are overworked and don't mean to come across that way.
