1.1. The wedding story

For those who haven't been following my PTR, my name is Lana and my husband is Ben. We had planned to get married at WDW, but when it came time to pay the deposit, we just couldn't get the Disney math to add up and, being about as far, far away from WDW as you can get (Perth, Western Australia), it was a pretty tough ask for our guests too. Instead, on Friday 10 January, we had a charming local wedding with all of our closest friends and family, and kept our flights to the US to use for our honeymoon instead. I won't bore you with too many wedding photos, but here a few highlights.

1.1. The honeymoon story

On Friday 17 January, we set off for our honeymoon. For those who weren't following my PTR, here's a quick overview.

1739778840759.png

Airline rankings:
We splurged on business class for our longer haul flights using frequent flyer points. Our itinerary was definitely heavily influenced by flight availability.
1. China Airlines (Business)
2. Singapore Airlines (Business)
3. Malaysia Airlines (Business)
4. Scoot (Premium)
5. American Airlines (Economy)
6. Spirit (Economy)

I'm sure most of the interest in this forum will be for WDW, so I'll just skip to a few of our initial thoughts on that.

Park rankings:
1. Magic Kingdom
2. Animal Kingdom (close)
3. Hollywood Studios
4. EPCOT (not even close)

Ben's were pretty similar, but for him Animal Kingdom was number 1.

Favourite attractions:
MK: (Ben) Peter Pan, (me) Tron, Seven Dwarves
AK: (Ben) Kilimanjaro Safaris, (me) Expedition Everest
HS: (Both) Rise of the Resistance, MMRR
EP: (Ben) Soarin', (me) Remy

Thoughts on resorts:
We did a split stay with 4 nights at the Poly, 7 nights at BLT, 3 nights at AKL (all studios). We loved them all for different reasons.
Poly: Convenient location, amazing views, more luxurious feel, handy extra bathroom, busy and crowded
BLT: Convenient location, more relaxed and quiet - almost felt out of the way, not as 'Disney' feeling
AKL: Wonderful theming and vibes, amazing animal viewings, good room layout, a little busy (but it was the weekend), buses were inconvenient

Congratulations! Your wedding pictures are terrific! You both look so very happy :tink: looking forward to your report.

Oh my goodness, I have been following your PTR and I can't believe you are finally married, that time seemed to fly by, congratulations!

I love the photo of the two of you with him dipping you to the camera and of course the one in front of the Castle.
Your dress is just stunning and your hair is perfect.

Lovely shot. :)

And yet... I note he is wearing dressy shoes while you have sneakers on... hmmm...
Love this shot. :)
being about as far, far away from WDW as you can get (Perth, Western Australia),
I had to look it up. What is the point if you were to drill right through the Earth from Magic Kingdom?

The answer surprised me a bit... maybe not you.
(The point directly opposite MK is represented by the head in the ocean... not all that far from... Perth!)

(FYI, the point directly opposite of Perth is almost exactly on Bermuda.)
Awww. :)
What a fun shot! :goodvibes
Did you do the "smash cake into the other's face" thing?
We splurged on business class for our longer haul flights using frequent flyer points.
Nice. :)
4. EPCOT (not even close)
Really! I'm surprised that it wasn't at least close.
MK: (Ben) Peter Pan, (me) Tron, Seven Dwarves
Ben is smart.

Wow that’s quite a trip! Congrats on your wedding 😊
Thank you :flower3:

It definitely was quite the trip! We are both glad to be home 😉

Congratulations! Your wedding pictures are terrific! You both look so very happy :tink: looking forward to your report.
Thank you :flower3:

Our photographer was amazing and not only took brilliant shots, but had a selection of sneak peeks through to us later that day!

Thank you :flower3: The time certainly did go quickly!

And yet... I note he is wearing dressy shoes while you have sneakers on... hmmm...
He had my full permission to wear sneakers too. Having said that, his dress shoes were a little more practical than my dress shoes 😉

(The point directly opposite MK is represented by the head in the ocean... not all that far from... Perth!)
Wow that's pretty incredible! I keep saying Perth is about as far away from Orlando as you can get, but I didn't realise just how true that actually is!

Did you do the "smash cake into the other's face" thing?
That's not really a thing in Australia. Thankfully. I don't get why anyone thinks it's a great idea to smash cake into anyone's face when they're all dressed up, particularly after they've spent a fortune on having their makeup done 🤷‍♀️

Really! I'm surprised that it wasn't at least close.
Neither of us 'got' EPCOT. It was a very definite last place for us.

Ben is smart.

Given the wait times for Tron and Seven Dwarves, you may be right.

Chapter 2: In which we go visiting and get into high places
2.1. The first flight

The big day was finally upon us! Our first leg was the 5.5 hour flight from Perth to Kuala Lumpur. Due to the unsociable timing of this flight with Malaysia Airlines (scheduled departure at 2:25am), we splurged on business class flights using our Qantas points. The day of (well, technically the day before) our flight, we were informed that departure would be delayed until 3:25am.

1739847340139.png

With such a late departure, we had all day and all night to get organised, but before I knew it, the dog sitter was arriving and it was time to go. I went to a last dance training session before meeting Ben at his Grandma's place. We enjoyed a last catch-up with Grandma for a bit before grabbing an Uber to the airport.

We were slightly too early to check in yet, but by the time we bought a last minute power adapter pack and weighed all our luggage (just for interest - we had plenty of allowance in business class!), check in was just opening up. I usually pack fairly lightly, and my suitcase usually hovers between 10-15kg, but for a 4 week trip across multiple climate zones with a post wedding photo shoot, my suitcase was already close to 20kg!

Malaysia Airlines doesn't have its own lounge at Perth Airport, so we were directed to the Aspire Lounge, which gets rave reviews. It was quite busy when we arrived, but definitely quieted down as the night wore on. There wasn't a huge selection of food, and it didn't get topped up either - it was quite clear that they were winding down, but we had been promised that they would remain open until our flight boarded, and luckily the drinks remained free-flowing.

1739848180132.png

1739848213893.png

The lounge had a couple of cute insta opportunities and a flash looking viewing deck.

1739848410451.png

1739848435509.png

1739848461219.png

What it really needed was some sleeping pods! Here we are trying to keep ourselves awake until departure time.

1739848517850.png

Unfortunately the estimated departure time kept getting later and later. Eventually we headed down to the gate anyway just for a change of scenery. We were probably waiting there for 20 minutes when we were paged 😬 Turned out not to be anything too drastic - just a change of seating as the one we'd booked for Ben had been damaged. We wouldn't be seated directly next to each other, but we were close enough, and were planning to be sleeping anyway 😉

Finally, a bit after 4am, we started boarding!

The seating arrangement for business class is usually 1-2-1, so couples usually have the middle 2 seats. Even though we weren't seated together, we were both still in middle seats, which wasn't an issue. There were blankets and pillows provided, so we could get comfy straight away. I also liked the little footrest that could be used even during takeoff and landing. There was plenty of room for all our stuff, a couple of charging points, and we were also provided with comfortable noise-cancelling headphones for our entertainment units.

1739849016377.png

While we were waiting for everyone to board, we were given a welcome drink, and were able to order what we wanted for dinner. I was exhausted and was pretty much planning to go straight to sleep, so I just ordered the appetizer of the signature satay sticks, and a warm milo to help put me to sleep. I took in the views over Perth as we were taking off, then I just watched a couple of episodes of Big Bang Theory to keep me awake until the food was served.

1739849666457.png

1739849217752.png

After enjoying my satay sticks and milo (at about 5am lol!), I reclined my seat into the sleeping position, curled up with my cushy blanket (as much as one can 'curl up' on something thinner than a hospital bed) and fell straight asleep. I did wake up in time for breakfast, but don't remember what was served and mustn't have taken any photos. I may have even watched a movie before we landed.

All up, apart from the late departure, it was quite an enjoyable flight and smooth-ish start to the trip.

I believe that!

That's good.

I've never understood it either. I would not have been impressed if it happened to me.

Would love to go there. :)

So no restriction at all? Or just so high that you'd have to have several bags to exceed it?
but for a 4 week trip across multiple climate zones with a post wedding photo shoot, my suitcase was already close to 20kg!
That's pretty good! Especially considering the wedding shoot too.

Maybe a good thing. You both might've passed out and missed your flight!

How does an airplane seat get damaged???
Finally, a bit after 4am, we started boarding!
:faint:

Very nice perk!
and a warm milo
What is that?

I would not have been impressed if it happened to me.
It may have resulted in immediate divorce...

Would love to go there. :)
Just a short hop from there to Perth 😉

So no restriction at all? Or just so high that you'd have to have several bags to exceed it?
3 pieces up to 32kg (70lb) each. Plus up to 14kg (30lb) carry on. There was absolutely no chance I'd be over!

How does an airplane seat get damaged???
I'm guessing the recline mechanism maybe?

What is that?
Milo is an Australian malted milk powder drink with a subtle chocolate taste. You can have it cold with milk or hot with milk and/or water. It's extremely popular in Malaysia - probably even more so than in Australia.

I don't have it that much anymore, but to this day, my parents still finish most evenings with a cup of hot milo.

Chapter 2: In which we go visiting and get into high places
2.2. Welcome to Kuala Lumpur

Part of the benefit of flying business class is that you're one of the first off the plane, and your luggage is prioritised too. From touchdown, it took about 20 minutes for us to get through the quite large KL airport. We headed down to the train station. Turns out the train passes we had actually need to be topped up at a 7-Eleven. We were given directions to the nearest one. After about 15 minutes of hopeless wandering, with different directions from everyone we asked, we gave up and headed out to the taxi rank. Then realised we didn't have much cash and the fares we were getting quoted were far more than we'd expected. We decided to get a Grab (SE Asia's version of Uber), and eventually found the pick-up zone, which I think was labelled as 'ride hail' or something.

Next problem, we'd forgotten how much luggage we were carrying, and we'd only ordered a standard Grab. Thank goodness for Malaysian ingenuity!

1739940803890.png

After our delayed flight and trouble getting from the airport, we arrived at our hotel, the Sheraton Imperial, far later than we'd expected, but still far earlier than our 3pm check-in time, so we weren't expecting our room to be ready yet. To our surprise, we were given a room straight away! I was a little disappointed not to see some sort of special honeymoon welcome message or something, but it was a beautiful room so all was forgiven.

1739941014430.png

1739941054399.png

1739941071381.png

We freshened up and headed straight out for lunch. There were a bunch of restaurants along a side street right next to the hotel, so we started there. They were mostly more westernised restaurants, but we did find one that served Malaysian food. I ordered Nasi Lemak (traditional Malaysian comfort food consisting of coconut rice, chilli paste, fried anchovies, peanuts, cucumber and egg) and Kopi C (iced coffee with sweetened evaporated milk). The way Nasi Lemak is served tends to vary wildly. The egg on this one was far too undercooked for my liking, but it came with a delicious chicken curry so all was forgiven there too.

1739941548558.png

The restaurant had some fun decorations up for Lunar New Year, and also had a decent view of the famous Petronas Towers.

1739941663971.png

I had pencilled in a trip to the KL Tower for our arrival day, but it wasn't that easy to get to, and we were both keen to take it a bit easier that afternoon. The hotel was conveniently located near a train station, so we decided to head there and see where the mood took us.

1739941893769.png

KL is a fascinating mix of old and new.

1739941970190.png

Continued in next post...

After being reminded about Lunar New Year, we decided to head to Chinatown to see if there was anything special going on there. Spoiler alert - other than a few decorations, there wasn't. It was still a bit early I think.

1739942133862.png

We enjoyed the stroll through the market. I bought a couple of light dresses, one of which would be suitable to wear to a temple for the next day's activities.

1739942205268.png

1739942224842.png

We finished off our wander with massages, a cold drink in the food court area, then headed back to the hotel.

There were lots of friendly cats around the city. I didn't take photos of all of them of course, but this little one was just too cute!

1739942406108.png

We tried out one of the other places near the hotel for dinner, where we shared a chicken satay platter and a Malaysian curry, which were both delicious.

1739942535155.png

We headed back up to our room via a little convenience store for ice-creams, then settled in for some much-needed sleep!

I love stuff like this. :)
I’ve never heard of it and yet it’s common where you live.

Chapter 2: In which we go visiting and get into high places
2.3. Climbing stairs

We started the day with the included buffet breakfast. The breakfast area was absolutely huge, and included every kind of cuisine you could imagine. Here's a small selection.

1740027587776.png

1740027617849.png

While in the area, we took the time to appreciate some of the architectural details of the hotel. Those first few floors were really quite spectacular.

1740027682769.png

1740027700699.png

The plan for the day was to head to Batu Caves on the train. There was a monorail stop right outside the hotel, so we took that all the way to KL Sentral Station. From the monorail station, we then had to cross a bridge and go through a large shopping centre to get to the trains. Given the frequency of trains within the city, I hadn't thought to look up the timetable for the train to Batu Caves, and it turned out they were only hourly, and we'd just missed one. Luckily, there was that large shopping centre nearby where we could fill in some time. We had some cold drinks and then stumbled across a lion dance to watch for a few minutes before making our way back to the train.

Soon we were boarding the train and settling in for the journey to Batu Caves. It was a decent journey of about 40 minutes from KL Sentral, but the time went quickly watching the scenery go by, and soon we were arriving at the station. Exiting the station was a little chaotic, but easy enough to manage and find the way to Batu Caves.

From the station, you come out at the entrance to a short promenade at the base of the cliffs, and walk along that to get to the main entrance.

1740028890150.png

Along the path, you will find market stalls, some other attractions and lots and lots of monkeys. Soon we arrived at the crowded plaza at the base of the stairs.

1740028522224.png

We began the walk up, stopping for many 'photos' (AKA rest stops). As you pass through the gate at the base of the stairs, there are cover ups available for those who are not adequately dressed. Ladies should have their knees and shoulders covered. There was no enforcement of this policy, but I had made sure I already had a suitable dress for the occasion out of respect. Most others also seemed to comply.

1740028798733.png

1740028840406.png

At the top of the stairs, you enter a large cave, and can then take another shorter flight of stairs to a small open area. There are several small temples and religious sites scattered around in both areas, and there was a small shop at the entrance to the cave where I'm sure you could buy drinks as well as souvenirs. Interestingly, there were no monkeys in there.

1740029027649.png

Between the lighting and the humidity, my camera was struggling to capture the beauty of the area. It was really quite spectacular to be surrounded by those massive cliffs, feeling like the jungle was closing in.

1740029161706.png

Here's a view looking straight up!

1740029329921.png

We hung around at the top for a bit, resting and taking photos before tackling the trip back down, which was equally as much work! Once again, I took many 'photo' stops.

1740029452535.png

1740032708139.png

1740032786561.png

It was later than I'd planned by the time we were done, and we were both feeling the heat and humidity. We decided not to bother with any of the other activities and just head straight back to the hotel. We were lucky with the timing for the train, with one waiting at the platform as we arrived. It took about 15 minutes to actually depart, but at least we were able to sit comfortably in the cool while we were waiting.

40 minutes later we were back at KL Sentral. We decided to stop for a quick drink as we headed through the shopping centre, and found this lovely Lunar New Year display.

1740033182316.png

By the time we got back to the hotel, it was cooling down, but we were still keen for a quick swim. It was slightly uncomfortably cold for me in the pool, so we weren't out there for long, but it was a lovely pool area. Just needed a bar.

1740033316333.png

We decided to splurge on dinner at the fancy Chinese restaurant at the hotel.

1740033782072.png

The menu was a little overwhelming, but we found some 'safe' sounding dishes, and it turned out to be amazing!

1740033540131.png

1740033805001.png

We finished off the evening with dessert at Cheevit Cheeva, a famous Thai dessert franchise. They specialise in Bingsu, a milk-based shaved ice dessert with toppings that may include fruit, condensed milk, syrup and/or red beans. Neither of us were quite brave enough to try the Bingsu, but we did enjoy a cheesecake and croffle (croissant x waffle).

1740033750198.png

And so finished another day in KL!

After about 15 minutes of hopeless wandering, with different directions from everyone we asked
Oh, dear... I thought there were 7-11s on every corner there.
Apparently... not so much.
, we gave up and headed out to the taxi rank. Then realised we didn't have much cash and the fares we were getting quoted were far more than we'd expected.
:headache:
Next problem, we'd forgotten how much luggage we were carrying, and we'd only ordered a standard Grab. Thank goodness for Malaysian ingenuity!
:laughing:You're lucky you didn't bring more!
To our surprise, we were given a room straight away!
:thumbsup2
I like the blue settee/sofa.
Nice bathroom! Tub looks nice and big.
I ordered Nasi Lemak (traditional Malaysian comfort food consisting of coconut rice, chilli paste, fried anchovies, peanuts, cucumber and egg)
Sounds delish...
Looks so good!
also had a decent view of the famous Petronas Towers.
Oh! Of course I've heard of them (and seen pictures... and probably a movie or two), but totally forgot they were there.
After being reminded about Lunar New Year, we decided to head to Chinatown to see if there was anything special going on there. Spoiler alert - other than a few decorations, there wasn't. It was still a bit early I think.
Well, poop. :(
Like this shot. :)
We finished off our wander with massages, a cold drink in the food court area, then headed back to the hotel.
Not a bad way to finish off!
The cat's been belled!
We tried out one of the other places near the hotel for dinner, where we shared a chicken satay platter and a Malaysian curry, which were both delicious.
Yum!
Love the floor...
...but those columns are fantastic!
I hadn't thought to look up the timetable for the train to Batu Caves, and it turned out they were only hourly, and we'd just missed one.
D'oh!
Luckily, there was that large shopping centre nearby where we could fill in some time.
:rolleyes1
Oh, how you must have suffered.

:lmao:
stumbled across a lion dance to watch for a few minutes
Cool! Happy little accident. :)
Wow!
Double wow!!
We began the walk up, stopping for many 'photos' (AKA rest stops).

Interesting. But not overly surprising, I think?
And monkeys! Were they fairly well behaved?
Here's a view looking straight up!
So cool! :)
"Mine! Allll mine!"
We were lucky with the timing for the train, with one waiting at the platform as we arrived.
Nice. :)

:rolleyes2
I'm seeing where the priorities lie...

Lovely shot of you two. :)
They specialise in Bingsu, a milk-based shaved ice dessert with toppings that may include fruit, condensed milk, syrup and/or red beans. Neither of us were quite brave enough to try the Bingsu
I would've definitely had that. Loved the shave ice in Hawaii.
but we did enjoy a cheesecake and croffle (croissant x waffle).
An acceptable substitute. :)
And so finished another day in KL!
Really enjoying this TR! :goodvibes
