Dining Review: The Hollywood Brown Derby

I originally had dinner reservations but decided the morning of to try and get a lunch one instead. The availability was wide open.

We got sat exactly where I like, a booth overlooking the floor. It is a comfortable booth with the tables allowing for manipulation to accommodate most/all guests. I knew what I wanted to order so this was the easy part.

The Cobb salad came out relatively quickly. Of course, the server asked me if I wanted it messy to which I said I could mess it up myself. And am I glad I did. The salad portion size was very good with very fresh ingredients. In fact, they doubled the cut bacon (or at least I noticed two separate piles). Then I did a gentle mix and was really enjoying it and then dove down in to get some turkey. And then I dove again and again and again. Hooray....I found the treasure chest of turkey in my Cobb salad! The 3-4 morsels were hidden under everything. What type of Mickey Mouse trick was this (especially at a $25 price point)? Although tempting to take a photo or inform the waitress, I forged ahead. That was my mistake. I informed our waitress at the end, and she thanked me saying she would inform the kitchen about equal distributions. Honestly, this was the essence of turkey and couldn't even fill up 1/4 of a teaspoon. It now makes me wonder if you let the server "make it messy" it somehow diminishes the abysmal amount of turkey in the dish.

We also got the Shephard's Pie. I didn't have any but was told it was excellent. It was made with lentils and no meat. It did look good from afar. We also got bread, which was merely average, but fresh/warm.

We got two glasses of white wine and a club soda with cranberry juice so no real challenges on that front.
I then decided to get dessert which is a rarity for me. Grapefruit Cake sounded interesting, and I heard/read some positive feedback online. We split it which was perfect portion sizing. The first bite, my mind was trying to register the flavor. It was sweet, but with sour notes. The layers of icing and the top having a single segment of grapefruit made presentation outstanding. The flavors, combined, were outstanding. This is an excellent piece of cake and worthy of being the only reason to stop at THBD. It was so impressive, that we immediately started looking up mock recipes to make it on our own. If that doesn't give a vote of confidence, I don't know what would.

Now that I had time to re-evaluate our meal, I would score the quality of food at an 8, preparation 4, drinks 7, service 7, value even with 20% AP discount, 3, theming 9.

Overall, for me: 6/10. In the future, if I get the Cobb salad, I'm going below the top level to see if there is any turkey. If it was like this past trip, I'm going to immediately notify our server.

The last time that we ordered Cobb Salad at HBD we were informed that the turkey is just meant to be a small taste, and that if we ordered the $25 salad as is, it would be an appetizer or "light lunch". We were advised that if we wanted a reasonable portion of protein and an "entree" salad that we should add the additional chicken or shrimp which are both listed on the menu. Ordering either the chicken or shrimp increases the price of the salad to $32 (also listed on the menu). Two of us added the shrimp and two of us added the chicken. Both were very good and nice portions. It seemed weird to add chicken to a salad with turkey, but that's what we did and apparently it is what they now encourage.

Nice review, I too liked the grapefruit cake but enjoyed a different dessert better. Since I went on my Birthday I got both, lol. Thinking of going back for my birthday next year. I am not a Cobb salad fan because I don’t like the dressing or blue cheese, but I enjoy the restaurant a lot.

A great honest well written review. We have ate there on our last 2 trips & have given it a 7/10 & a 9/10.
The food was good & delicious on both occasions. The theming as always is perfect. But we found it a little loud the first time & our server unfortunately a little slow hence the 7/10. But the second time it was almost perfect. the reason for the 9 & not a 10 is simply down to waiting 25minutes over our ADR time!

I appreciate the info. I have been digging up reviews of the cobb salad (which I've never had before), and I can't believe how much the price has increased in the last few years. The current menu price is $28 or $35 with chicken. If having this as your entree, would you add chicken or shrimp in the future?

I think this is the blueprint that some Disney restaurants follow. Once the item becomes uber popular and reducing the portion size of the more costly ingredient(s) like I experienced with the turkey, they merely create an adder to somehow qualify it as a main course. So, since my visit 6 months ago in June, it has gone up 12% for the base salad? The way I look at it is they shouldn't have to entice me with an adder if the turkey portion was substantial enough.

I can tell you their Cobb salad is off my radar for now.

I am sorry about your experience with the Cobb salad, hertamaniac. We have gone to the Hollywood Brown Derby only at dinner time, so I can't offer an opinion on lunch. The price seems to be the same at lunch and dinner, though, so the salad ought to be the same.

The Cobb salad used to be offered as an appetizer at dinner. Then they shifted it over to being an entree. We have usually ordered one Cobb salad for every three people in our group, treated as a salad course, even though it is listed as an entree. We have the server mix it up and separate it into portions. Then everyone orders an individual entree. This has worked out well for us. We like the salad, and it is an item we can't get at restaurants in our area.

To be honest, neither my husband nor I could remember any turkey in the serving of Cobb salad we got.

However, I just looked up the dinner menu and saw that "Spit-roasted Turkey" is listed as the very first item in the description of the Cobb salad. In my view, that should mean that it is the main constituent.
