So I was just wondering if anyone knew how it would work if I wanted to return something I bought this morning at Target? I got the $10 gift card, so I'm not sure how that works?
Thanks!

From what I remember, you'll get back the price you paid minus $10. I did this once and brought the $10 gc with me, but the cashier just gave me $40 back instead of $50.

do you know if that would still be the case if you returned an item but your total purchase was still over $100. I have something I'm thinking about returning as well but I also bought a tv so I still spent over $100.

I spent $200.40 yesterday, so I received the gift card. Returned one pair of kids pants for $9.99 and one pj set for $5.00. Should have been a return of $14.99, but the register prorated it, so it was a return of $14.20'ish. I complain stating that even if I had not purchased the jeans and pj set, I would have still been over $100.00 to qualify for the gift card. They stated there was nothing they could do about it in their register system, but handed me two $3.00 gift cards instead. I thanked them and let my daughter pick out a toy to donate to toys for tots (so complaining about the $.70 cost me about $12 after the gift cards, but hey, it was all good.

if you return it for store credit, that shouldn't have any effect your total

Sometimes in those situations I just return the merchandise for store credit.

When I bought Toy Story 3 at TRU, I bought Disney's Oceans DVD. I used the store coupons as well as the Disney coupon. After buying the DVD, I realized I really would've prefered to have the blu ray version. Just the kind of movie that I would think to look better on blu ray. I searched all the toys r us in Texas and couldn't find the blu ray of it. Searched the Toys R Us here for it and couldn't find it either, but they were willing to return it for store credit. I really do want the blu ray of Oceans, but I just can't find it. So I'm going to use the credit to buy Fantasia.

I believe in this situation they will pro-rate the value of the gift card across all the items in your purchase, so you will get back the purchase price minus some portion of the $10. I think Toys R Us does it this way too. This would apply in situations where you get an $X gift card for spending $Y dollars.

If you got a gift card because you purchased a specific item (like you got a $10 gift card for buying Super Mario Brothers), but you return a different item on the receipt, there should be no effect on your return of the other item. However, if you returned Mario, they would deduct $10 from that return. (Only used this as an example!).

Does that make sense?

I did this at Target a couple months ago: I bought an ipod for around $150 (it's been months, and I'm kind of rounding off here) and got a $10 gift card. I immediately used the gift card towards my groceries. So essentially I considered the ipod $140.

A couple weeks later, I found the ipod for a lower price, and I returned the first one (unopened -- I'd intended it to be a Christmas gift) to Target. They gave me $140 instead of the $150 that I'd paid.

Fair.
