I know this was asked in another thread, but I thought maybe more people might have done this recently and have a solid answer.
Does anyone rent from Dollar or Thrifty and use Sunpass? Their website has some unclear wording but makes it sound like cash or the plate pass is the only option?

Plenty of toll roads have now converted to All Electronic Tolling; tolling that no longer offers traffic booths for travelers to stop and pay tolls in person. If your travels lead you through a toll road with no options to stop and pay, PlatePass® All Inclusive Tolling is the perfect solution. Be sure to check with the local tolling authority for all available payment options.

“PLEASE NOTE: If you decline the optional PlatePass All-Inclusive service at the start of the rental period, but still use electronic toll roads and/or bridges during the rental period (including “cashless” or “all electronic” toll roads and bridges, as noted above), you will be liable for and we will charge you: (a) all tolls incurred for such use (at the highest, undiscounted applicable toll rate); (b) a $15.00 administrative fee (FL & Boston Area - $9.99 per occurrence) for each toll incurred (subject to a $90.00 cap for such toll-related administrative fees for the rental period); and (c) all other applicable toll charges or fees, if any.”

I replied in the CC thread, but short answer, if it reads the transponder the rental company will never know you went through a toll.

Ah, that does clarify it a bit thank you! So only if the toll reads the license plate, then they would know?

Even then, the plate is supposed to get checked against the EZ-Pass account list before it goes to PlatePass. I don't know if that actually happens, but that is what is supposed to happen.

If I want to bring my personal transponder for EZ Pass into a rental car, is there anything I need to do?
TIA

Make sure you have a way to attach it to the windshield of the rental. I bought a suction cup mount on Amazon for $8. Look through your issuing agency's website and find out how they want you to handle rental cars. IL says to add it as a rental on their website but that didn't work, I had to add it as a new vehicle and then take it off when I turned the rental back in.

I used my ezpass and it didn't register all the tolls and now I got a bill from alamo. Also had 2 tolls charged to my ezpass after I returned car

I always add my rental as a new car and never had any problems.

If you don't want to use your own transponder you can always sign up for https://visitortollpass.com it's basically a temporary toll pass. You pick it up at the airport and return it when you return your
car.

There are a couple limitations to the VTP. It only works with the 10 companies onsite at MCO, and there is only one vending machine to get the pass from. Works great if you come in on SW, not so much if you're on one of the legacies.

All the major rental companies are supported and while it would be nice to have the kiosk on both terminal A and B, it's a real easy walk from baggage claim B be to the terminal A kiosk to get the visitor pass.
