Will they let our DD bring on a typical-sized school backpack (basic Jansport-type) as a personal item under her seat?

As long as it scrunches and fits completely under the seat then, I know in the past, we did not have a problem. It's can't be sticking out by the feet at all.

There should be devices close to check in or the security gate when you can put the bag in to see if it will fit.

We have always taken our full size backpacks on Spirit without a problem and I'm sure at least a few of them were technically too large. If you can fit it under the seat there won't be a problem.

Right, I should have said that I measured it, and it’s an inch too big in each direction, but it won’t have much in it and can be scrunched down to fit.

Are they super particular IF it fits?

It's an inch too big.

you are flying on an airline that makes ALL of it's profit (and actually a LOT of profit) off of extra fees.

You are flying on an airline that doesn't really care if they upset their customers (they know that since they are cheap you will be back)

When they catch you they can and will charge you and a defense of "they told me on the DIS it was OK" won't carry much weight.

So you have to decide if you want to risk it, but if you get told "pay up" there's no one to blame but yourself.
