Our school choral department was much bigger than the forces that went into our school musicals. Some of the choir kids were set free to participate, but I was too deeply embedded in choir stuff to have the time... four different school choirs (full, select women's, select mixed, show), a small chamber music group the director kept on the side, and then the big things outside of school like region, all state, all east, etc. The ones in the chamber music group were also the ones she sent off any time they needed people for the Star Spangled Banner, Rotary Club entertainment, etc.
It always makes me a bit sad because musicals are how I got into singing in the first place. School show choir and some of the choreographed numbers in full choir were my only opportunities to do any of this (Too Darn Hot - Kiss Me Kate, All That Jazz - Chicago, etc.). I danced as well. I gave it up before my senior year in high school. I was too busy singing to do competition team dance, but I was in the same classes and performance groups as the competition girls. Tap and Jazz were my strongest. Acting was probably my weakest. I'd done a few summer workshops, but I was more song and dance. I started college as a voice performance major and sang for my first 2 years, but I knew I didn't want to pursue it as a full time professional. Starving artist seemed a bit too much for me to handle.
I'm tempted to get back into it...even exploring local theater...when both kids are out of the house. I sang in the chorus for our city's symphony for a handful of years before having the kids, but not sure I want to go so serious again. Classical is great and all (we also did some pops), but it's a lot fighting with downtown for the theater area during concert weeks.
