Review of Frontier Airlines

We flew via Frontier last month for the first time so I thought I would post a review to inform others. For perspective, the only other low-cost carrier I've flown was Allegiant.

We flew round trip, departing Tulsa May 29 and returning June 7. The tickets were $170 each, plus seat selections & 2 checked bags. For 3 people, the total was $682, far less than the $465 each out of our home airport. Bonus: Had to stay two extra days to get that price.

Bags: You get only a personal item for free on Frontier. Checked bags were $25 each, each way. Carryon bags were $30 or $35.

Seats: The seats appeared more cheaply made and thinner than other airlines. They seemed to have a padded seat cover. Comfort-wise, they felt no better and no worse than other coach seats to me.

Snacks/Entertainment: Non-existent. You could purchase small snacks or canned drinks. I think for $10 you get 2 snacks/2 drinks. There were no televisions.

Flight: TUL-MCO was bumpy, lots of turbulence. Return flight was much better.

Arrival at MCO: We had to fly around storms. After being in a holding pattern of sorts outside Orlando, the pilot said we were going to have to divert to St. Petersburg to avoid the storms, and we would refuel there. A little while later, the pilot came back on and said we didn't have enough fuel to get to St. Pete and would be landing at Tampa instead. DH said there is no way the plane should have been that close to empty. At TPA, we sat on the tarmac a while, refueled, and waited. One passenger lady got irate and was in the face of a flight attendant and yelling, demanding free food and drinks. She was escorted off the plane by security. I overheard the flight attendant tell another that the lady had grabbed her by the neck. The flight attendants did offer free water after an hour. After a while, the lady was allowed to come back on the plane. I couldn't believe it! Finally we left TPA for Orlando, and arrived around 8pm, far after our original 4pm arrival time. We had a fairly rough landing - can't remember if it was at Tampa or Orlando, but it was still very windy with nearby storms.

RETURN
Long security lines at MCO, but we were way early so not a problem. Check-in was easy. Flight was a little bumpy in the beginning, then turned out to be pretty smooth. Pilot said flight time would be 2 hours, 12 minutes from wheels-up to wheels-down, and it was exactly that. HOWEVER, as soon as we landed, the plane began barely moving to taxi to the gate. Another Frontier plane landed just behind us and was allowed to go in front of us to deplane, as it was a late arrival. So we sat on the tarmac and waited -- almost 2 hours. So very aggravating -- and DH said he didn't care how cheap it was, he would never fly Frontier again.

At Tulsa (and probably many other locations), Frontier only leases one gate from the airport. So even though there were empty gates all around the terminal, there was only one gate designated for Frontier, and there was already a plane there (the one that landed after us).

So there you have it. If you fly Frontier, I hope your experience is better than ours!Frontier.PNG

Yes they have been reporting 45 minutes to 1 hour wait for MCO security.

2 weeks ago a co worker was flying to Vegas on Frontier. His flight was delayed for 6 hrs. They boarded the plane and then was told the flight was being cancelled because the pilot had been awake too long. It was now 1 in the morning and he had to drive home and be back at the airport by 9 a.m. to catch his rescheduled flight. They did give him $200 for it.
I also noticed last week the two flights I could have been on from MCO to Cle were either delayed several hours or canceled all in one week.
I just read another story last week of a person who got checked in at the airport and went to the gate. At the gate he was handed a letter informing him his flight to MCO was cancelled and it listed what his options were.
They use to be good airline now I am not so for sure on that.

People on Touring Plans several times last week had flights on Frontier canceled. One ended up driving from Indiana to Disney! No way!

My nephew was booked on them. They cancelled his non stop flight and put him on one that had him flying west somewhere, spending the night there, and then heading home to Michigan. No thanks!! So glad we didn't book all of our tickets with them.

After much consternation and analysis, I used Frontier Airlines for the first time from MCO - TUL on May 29th. I was so pleasantly surprised with the airline [we got home right on time; paid extra for stretch seating] that I booked another flight with them from MCO - TUL on July 29th. Now I'm scared that I just had a lucky one and done. :crazy2: :teeth:

I checked the status of the flight from last night [July 9th] and it got here [Tulsa] 3.5 hours late.

Wow you had a bit of bad luck it seems. I’ve flown Frontier at least a dozen times now and haven’t had any issues like that. We did arrive early once and couldn’t deplane because they had to wait for another flight to leave but it wasn’t that long and ultimately put us right on time.

It may vary by airport but everyone I know around here loves them.

I don't really have a problem with Frontier...sure they nickel and dime u to death BUT on a short flight most of the upcharges aren't needed....I flew from Knoxville Tn. to MCO roundtrip back in Dec/2017 for $101 total...bags included! Now i didn't like the long check in line at MCO on the way back BUT it seemed to b because all the flight leaving at nearly the same time....We stayed at Universal for the week so no hotel baggage drop

One of the biggest problems with so-called Ultra-Low-Cost Carriers (ULCCs) like Frontier is that they don't handle Irregular Operations (IROPS) well. IROPS is basically any time something out of the ordinary occurs. In MouseLover's outbound, weather forced Frontier into IROPS. On the return, the other delayed flight caused the problem.

ULCCs tend to be much smaller, which means fewer planes, fewer gates, and fewer employees. Those lack of resources generally mean passengers will be impacted to a greater degree than if the exact same scenarios happened with one of the bigger "legacy" airlines.

At this point, your only option is to cross your fingers and hope for a "regular" day. When things are running normally, you should be fine.

Glad I read this. With all their add ons and whatnot, I would only be saving 300 dollars compared to Delta, which has the TV's in each seat, free snacks, reliable wait times etc. Doesn't seem worth the savings, even to be on the front of the plane. Plus, no wifi, no tv, what the hell do I do to entertain 3 kids for 5 hours, plus maybe more if we get stuck. No thanks.

Frontier is quicker then other airlines to drop underperforming cities and routes. Southwest will rarely make a schedule change which impacts flights on the current schedule. Frontier has made a changes with weeks, or even days, notice.

Save enough money, for a trip in the near future...might be worth a shot.

Talk about unbundled pricing, buy an adult drink and the liquor and mixer is separately priced.

To PP, bring your own snacks. Bring tablets with movies or shows preloaded

While I’m not defendinding many of Frontier’s practices...
I can tell you a few things. You get what you pay for. The seats are cheap, both in price and comfort. The reason is because it’s a-la-cart, not bundled.
So, pick your poison on that one.

Bumps??? Do you really think it’s only bumpy for Frontier flights??

Diversion same thing. Do you expect the airline to do anything unsafe?

Do you really think the security lines are Frontiers fault?

I’m a bit confused.

No, I absolutely don’t blame Frontier for the minor turbulence. I’m just trying to describe the flight.
No, I don’t expect them to have unsafe practices, but they did imo. Flights should have enough fuel for unexpected delays.

You do get what you pay for. The seats looked cheap, but they felt like any other plane seat to me.

All that being said, I’m flying Delta in June.

Well, I guess the only thing we disagree on is unsafe practices.
I can assure you the airplane was fueled properly.
