Renting Points - An Opinion

It is unreasonable to buy DVC with the idea of spending any or at least many of the points for the exchange options, especially other WDW resorts. So if you are thinking buy DVC points and stay at Caribbean Beach, the numbers will never add up. OTOH, you could compare to say 8 points per night at OKW or 9 pts at BWV standard with no tax and DVC wins most of the time. Cheaper, better room and better resort. The other issue hidden in your post is that to stay short stays with weekend nights (Fri & Sat) will also not be a good value of points DVC or otherwise. So if you're happy with a moderate and want to stay mostly long weekends, DVC is not for you.

Most people find they enjoy the DVC resorts so much that they find it hard to go back to a regular room, even at the luxury WDW resorts. You may want to consider renting points for a stay at a DVC resort maybe Sunday to Friday, then make a final judgement.

25 for 2 nights and 45 the other two nights

For 24 weekday points and 47 weekend points you could get a one bedroom at BWV, BCV, or VWL. A room at Caribean Beach would not compare to this as a one bedroom has a full kitchen, 2 rooms, and about 725 sq ft while CB rooms are only 340 sq ft.

Thank you. I see now what you mean. I was looking at the Carribean because it is reasonably priced, I never looked at OKW because I know it is rather expensive..... I was shocked that it is way less in points. So, we may do something like that for our anniversary trip. Thank you for your help.

The ability to use points at non-DVC resorts is a convenience for members....so we won't feel we are missing out on the ability to stay at the other resorts or concerns about giving up the moderate hotel many of us had come to love. However, a premium is paid to do this and, in fact, most members prefer their DVC homes over the other resorts. The option is just there to provide some variety. It wouldn't make sense for a non-member to rent points to use at a non-DVC resort. As you point out, the cost just doesn't add up.

With all due respect, I think the fix on prices is a mainstay of this forum. When I first posted on this board about the wonderful deals that could be had by renting DVC points at low cost, I was called a liar and was labeled a "troll" and "troublemaker". I have rented DVC points on many occasions and found in my experience that the average price per point that I have paid is $6.00 to $7.00. Now, let me be clear and state that I have never rented points via this forum. Heck, I was renting DVC points long before I even knew anything about the Internet. There are many other options for renting DVC points. As several previous posters have mentioned, it's an open and free market. The value of DVC points is determined by what a willing buyer will pay to a willing seller. I looked into buying a DVC contract years ago and almost bought one until I discovered rentals. I have gone to WDW four times a year during the past 8 years. IMO from 8 years of experience, it is far less expensive to rent DVC points than to buy them. Just my $0.02.

There are deals to be had at times. Whether it's short term points (will expire soon), through a resale broker who has points that won't be used or just from someone that doesn't have a clue. As I told you before it's not realistic and not the true value of points. Here's the thread. The only think I accused you of was talking down the price and therefore trolling for lower rentals. I look at you the same way I do the ones that post that DVC should be $12-15 per point. Both can get that at times if they're dilligent enough and willing to take the chances, it's just not realistic for most people and not the way I want to interact with people. I personally would not want to schedule all holidays and the like and then auction them, I'm not comfortable doing so but it is a way to get a higher price for rentals. If I did it for the money, I'd just work an extra weekend once a month, I'd make a heck of a lot more doing so.

Ouch! I just read that thread you linked, Dean (and I remember reading it at the time) and it ended with one poster pledging to never lower their price below $10 and not to hurt other DVC owners-- I don't think the poster meant any harm by the statement, but with all due respect to my DVC friends (I'm a DVC wannabe myself), how often to we state over and over "$10 is the standard rate, $10 is the going rate" like a mantra before it becomes a subtle price-fixing? We all agree that the points are worth, on the rental market, whatever someone is willing to pay for them, but I have to say, I do see a bit of hostility (not from rccomputers!) from some on these boards sometimes to both owners charging less or renters looking for better deals.

I'm not intending to flame anyone or start a debate-- I generally agree with Dean on about 95% of everything but there is a ring of truth of Bottlejet's post.
