"Reduce" a 2-BR lockoff reservation to a 1-BR?

Looking at a 2-BR lockoff at BWV, BRV or OKW for this September, traveling with adult son and his GF. If they have to cancel, can we revise the reservation to be a 1-BR?

The room layouts are different between the 2BR and the 2BR lockoff, but the booking rules are exactly the same. There is no way to drop part of a lockoff at a later date.

I think if you're fast enough, you should be able to cancel the 2-bedroom lockoff and then rebook as a 1-bedroom, because both your 1-bedroom and your studio will be returned to inventory immediately after canceling.

Unless someone has a waitlist (likely). I wouldn’t bank on this.

I think you've got a good chance of getting a 1BR either in open inventory or via the waitlist, unless you need to make the change very close to check in.

I think if it were me, I'd take my chances and book a 2BR at the resort of my choice. If you need to make a change, look around for what is available. It will be even easier if you'd also be willing to consider AKV/SSR as your 1BR backup plan. If nothing that you want is available, waitlist the two 1BRs with the largest "pool" of available units to maximize your chances of catching a cancellation. Of the resorts you list, that's BWV-Garden and OKW-Resort. DVC Help has a full breakdown.

Is the assumption that waitlist jobs only run periodically?

We really don’t know how often or how it works but I can tell you from my experience doing a lot of modifications and trying some different things, there is nothing consistent, other than I have found one night drops tend to show up more often than multiple ones.

The only way I’d chance something like this, and I have, if willing to spilt stay, is ti drop a night at a time and try and pick back up.

Sometimes it’s worked, and other times it did not so I had to go with other options…which I made sure existed before I even tried!

I dropped a night today that did not immediately re-appear. It is possible that someone else was looking for it just then, but who knows?

Whether the waitlist is running or not, there is still the chance that one of the other hundreds of thousands of members is looking for what you are cancelling while you are cancelling it. Personally, I would never cancel something that I wasn't willing to lose completely.

The good thing witht he online booking system is you can tell if a one bedroom is available using the "modify" function, if they do decide they aren't going. Then you won't have to just cancel the lock-off and try to book a one bedroom if one isn't available. And remember to do this far enoiugh out that the extra points you may have don't go into holding, and be mindful of your banking window, as well. I've only dropped a studio from a lock-off once, but that in the very early years of DVC when there was plenty of availability.
