Redeeming Airmiles for a flight

Has anyone done his recently? Just waiting to find out if the Alaska cruise I'm looking at it is going to be allowed to leave from Vancouver and I finally have enough miles for the flight so I'm wanting to book it before the number of miles required goes up. Problem is that I don't need the flight if the cruise doesn't happen. Are they refunding miles or how does it work?

Airmile rates for flights are lower than normal right now for Florida flights but I am not sure of other areas. You can buy Cancellation insurance for your miles but I would presume that it would have to be a medical or an emergency situation. It has been a dicey situation in booking travel the last two years.
