Real ID May 7, 2025 deadline, do you have one already, will you have one by next year or just use a passport?

We are talking about a law passed in 2005.
That's true but they also increased what meant "compliant" over time. I know our state was considered compliant for a long time but then additional information was required by the law years after which then caused states to not be considered compliant. So it's a mixture of a law being passed but also what information is being required to be collected also changing. Plus the law didn't take into account having 50 different states with different systems and different rules on getting a license.
Are there really still states that are not issuing compliant id or is it just a matter of people not having renewed since the state went compliant?
My state was considered early in compliance but again what was being asked for changed. They've only been issuing REAL IDs since August 2017 for my state and your ID for vast majority of residents is good for 6 years. My ID renewed last in 2022 and I took that opportunity to get a REAL ID.

Exactly. Even though the act was passed in 2005, in response to 9/11, there were numerous delays and most states did not begin issuing them until 2016-2020.

My last driver’s license expired in 2017, several months before Real ID was available in my state (New York). So I don’t have one yet, but will get it next time I renew, which will be next year. (DL is good here for 8 years.) I also have a valid passport.

Got my real ID 5 years ago, a year after California starting offering them. My license needing renewing and I saw no reason not to get a real id. However, I don't foresee a time in my life where I also won't have a valid Passport.

I have Real ID, and have for quite some time now. This reminds me that my passport card will be expiring this fall so I better look into getting a new one.

I have had the real ID close to 5 years now and will be renewing the license early next year again. So I guess my real ID is up for renewal.

I've had a Real ID since 2016. When I moved to another state, I was given one. I didn't know about it at the time. I also have a passport.

Was not aware of this but it also looks like you can use your "Global Entry card" if you have one

You may also use an active passport, passport card, or even a Global Entry card to fly domestically. You’ll also be able to use these TSA-approved documents to get through airport security:
  • U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
  • Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo IDs
  • Transportation worker identification credentials
  • U.S. Merchant Mariner credentials

I figured this would be a good thread to post now since many people in our country will be traveling by plane to major sporting events in our country starting next year and for the next decade.
My husband and I have a passport which allows travel only to Mexico or Canada. It also is a real ID, so no other is needed. We were told that this passport works just the same as a real ID. It would not work for overseas travel, but we don't plan on doing that at all.

I have a passport and I will not get the real ID. I will always keep my passport and I don't really want to pay the up charge for real ID. My kids all have passports as well, and the ones that drive, have the old school IDs except my oldest son. We did get him a real ID because he travels a lot for football and flys a ton. For him it made it easier to upgrade. I don't trust him to bring his passport to each game and back etc.

What type of passport doesn’t work for international travel?

Why on earth are states still giving the option to get an ID that is not real ID compliant?

What states still give an option?

That seems backwards and completely contrary to the intent of the Real ID Act.

I guess that is the point.

I'm not sure why people are so resistant to provide the necessary information to get a Real ID issued.

Because people want the choice? So long as people are aware of what it means I see no issue with providing both options. But I don't agree with charging more for REAL ID.

In my state you can opt for not getting a REAL ID.

As has been talked about ad nauseum some people may not realize how difficult it may be to get the necessary documents especially for married women, especially for married women from decades ago. But there's other individuals that may fall under difficulty providing the necessary documentation (other legal name changes for one).
