Peanut Allergy-What restaurants to avoid?

Nope, no peanut warning on the Mickey Bars. DS has had quite a few over the years with no problem. :mickeybar ;)
These kids miss out on so much, I hate to see them miss out on more if they dont have to. :(

My peanut/nut allergic son did have a reaction to the Mickey ear ice cream bars, and it you call food service, they will tell you that they are not safe for peanut allergic people. In my opinion, it's pure negligence that Nestle doesn't put a warning on them.

Wow! That is awful! Im so sorry for your experience. I hope he doesnt have a severe allergy. Is it possible there was something besides peanuts that caused the reaction? Like I said, my DS has had plenty of them over the years witih no problems, so we can say for sure peanut products are not in all of them.
I did just call and ask the dreaded peanut question. After waiting quite a while for the CM on the phone to contact the proper people, I was told they are safe. But as with most things at Disney, ask 2 different CMs a question, get 2 different answers. ;)

Thanks for the warning.

I would feel awful if I didn't reply and something awful happened.
I was carted away in an ambulance 3 years ago from Chef Mickey's after dinner due to a SERIOUS allergy attach (anaphylactic). I think it was due to a preservative which was sprayed on the salad bar or other food. Just be very careful. I'll never go back for dinner, only breakfast. Good luck!!

Ack! I'm sorry to hear that. :( I need to call myself and ask all my questions. I will do so before our trip. The thing is, my son's allergy isn't severe. (I know some people don't think there are levels to a peanut allergy, you either are or your not...) But he actually ate peanut butter without any reaction before we found out about his allergy. (He had those Uncrustables at WDW in March 2003, a month before we had him tested and discovered the allergy!) Anyway, we are still trying to find our comfort zone when it comes to things that don't actually contain peanuts, but have the cross-contamination issue... I am like some of you and don't want him to miss out on things if it's not necessary, but obviously I want to keep him safe. It's a tough thing! :(

I wanted to add that we always carry his Epi-Pen Jr. everywhere we go. I hope we never have to use it!

How scary for you that must have been!! :( Thank you for the warning, I appreciate it!

You should never risk thinking that a nut allergy may or may not be severe. If your child has tested positive for peanuts then you should be wary of any foods that have even the slightest risk. From what I have learned about allergies through hours of discussions with doctors around the country allergic reactions are progressive. In other words you can have contact with a food and not experience any visible symptoms, but with each exposure your body becomes more and more sensitive. Eventually there is that one exposure to even a trace amount of the allergen, and the results can be catastrophic. I know everyone is different, but it is easier to manage when you treat an allergy as black & white(you are allergic or you are not). I am not trying to be an alarmist, and am not in the habit of telling other people how to handle their children, but I do feel that sharing credible information can be helpful. That said, we are taking our DS who has a peanut allergy, and are confident that he will have many wonderful food/dining experiences. He will have to miss out on the Mickey bars, but I suspect it doesn't bother him as much as my Wife and I. Have a wonderful trip.

<---- Tee Nut/Peanut Allergy here. (Also coconut and scallops)

Boma is the one place I avoid at dinner. I've had no problems with breakfast there though. But dinner, not good.

I've eaten at the Kona MANY times, they are wonderful about creating something "off-menu" for you. For example terriyaki chicken instead of beef. I do NOT eat desert at Kona, lots of cross contamination possibilities IMHO,,,too many to make me feel safe about it.

At buffets always insist that desserts be brought from the kitchen to avoid cross contamination.

Let me know if you have other questions, my friend is celiac sprue and lactose intolerant and we've been to WDW together twice now, so I can comment on those issues as well.

Thanks ducklite. Yeah, I've crossed Boma (dinner) off our list, it just sounds like it's too risky. Thanks for the tip about having dessert brought from the back! I wouldn't have thought to ask that...we would have just not given any to him. Thanks! :)

Does anyone know if the Zebra Domes are safe (not from the buffet...straight from the kitchen)?

Thanks for the warning.

I spoke to the manager of food carts for WDW last year, but I can't for the life of me find her name and number. She apologized for what happened to my son and said that the Mickey ear bars were not safe, that all CM's had been trained in that respect, and that the CM at the cart should not have said they were ok. I also contacted Nestle, who said that they have no dedicated lines for their foods, so that the ice cream bars could be produced on the same line as nut products. The cart manager also said that the carts would have ingredient lists for all of their products starting this year, so you might want to check that, too.

My son is very allergic to peanuts (a category 6 on his last blood test), and he's also allergic to tree nuts. He had eaten the Mickey Bars many times before his reaction, so I guess it was just a matter of Russian roulette. Oh, well, we won't chance it again.

That's the problem with cross-contamination issues. So many products state "May contain traces...". You could eat it 99 times without any reaction, because there were no traces. But, that 100th time is the time you get one that really does contain traces. This is why we avoid all Nestle products, knowing that they do not have dedicated lines.

When our son was tested for allergies the allergist told us that sometimes if a child had the food within a certain number of days before being tested (I forgot the # of days she said) that they could come up positive for an allergy. My son did show a possible problem with the skin test, but is fine with peanuts.

Another son was given a peanut butter cookies when he was 1yo and had a hive-like reaction (no breathing problems, just some swelling around the mouth). We kept him totally away from peanuts until he was around 3yo and he is now fine. The dr (our pedi, not the allergist) told me that sometimes if a child is given peanuts at a young age that they will have a reaction and will turn out not to be allergic, which is what happened in our case.

I was very careful to keep peanuts away from my youngest until he was 3yo.

Not saying for anyone to risk it since peanut allergies can be so serious, but just though I'd share our experience with the allergy testing.

Oh, friends of ours did go to Boma for dinner with their son who is allergic to wheat, dairy, and peanuts (don't really know how severe each of those allergies are). I'll ask her about her Boma experience.

Thanks for sharing that about the testing. It's interesting to hear different people's experiences with this.

I'd be interested to hear what your friend said about Boma. :D

I'll try to remember to ask her when I see her on Monday. If I don't post back here Monday feel free to send me a PM. I'm in vacation planning mode right now and am extra spacey. ;)

I do know that my friend was so impressed with the way that Disney goes out of their way to help a family with allergies. They never get to go to Italian restaurants normally since their son is allergic to wheat, but when they went at Epcot they had special pasta w/o wheat (made with rice flour I think she told me), a couple kinds of bread, dessert, etc. He actually had choices, which really meant a lot to them and to their son. This is one thing that keeps people coming back to Disney!

Thanks, will do! :D

I was told the Mickey ice cream bars are NOT safe. Is there anywhere safe for the peanut allergic to have ice cream at WDW? Besides buying a box of Breyers and eating it in your room, I mean. :earboy2:

I haven't read all of the replies yet but I contacted WDW and was told that all counter service was safe... and to ask to speak to the Chef in any sitdown restaurants. At the 50's prime time cafe the chef came out and told us that if ds wanted ice cream he would open a new container to make sure there was no cross contamination. I felt very comfortable eating in WDW!!
