My son's 7th birthday is coming up and he has fallen in love with the Spike the Dinosaur toy in a display at Target. (Huge remote control dino that walks and roars, etc.) The recommended ages on the package are 3-10, but the remote looks more geared to the younger kids. I'm nervous about spending so much on a potential "preschool toy." Does anyone have Spike? Is it age appropriate for a 7-yr-old? Thanks!

We don't have it either, but every time we go to Target my son asks for it. He'll be six. I'm curious to see the responses that you get, because I have been apprehensive to spend that much without knowing if he'll actually like it at home.

My neighbors bought this for their 3 year old son. He played with it once. I think the Dad plays with it more. My dd is 6 and she likes to go over there and play with it. It's cute but just too much $$

we have it. My son got it last christmas, he had just turned 4. We have fun with it chasing the dog. He doesn't use it all the time. It is funny though when spike walks for a while he sounds like he is out of breath. The remote should be fine for any age. Sorry I can't help with an older child

My DS has Spike. He was a young 4 when he got it for Christmas. He likes it, but it is not his favorite toy. He has not problem with the remote so I am thinking it is too easy for a 7 year old.

Hope this helps.

This is the only thing that DS has asked for from Santa so far this year. (I'm trying to get them to make their lists early so I can bargin hunt.)
He'll be 6 just after Christmas.

So far it's a firm No. Or should I say..."I don't think Santa thinks we have room for a dinosaur." We'll see what happens as the holidays approach. There will have to be some HUGE black Friday sales for me to change my mind on this one though.

Let me know what happens with the older guys that get it....

I can't give a review on Spike (because he is still in the box), but I wanted to give a bargain suggestion if you are looking for him.

DS just turned 4 this past August. When the original green Spike came out last X-mas DS3 wanted him, but Santa thought 1. he was to much and would blow the x-mas budget and 2. DS might not be old enough for him yet. So Santa decided to pass on Spike. Then the after X-mas clearance started. Walmart who originally had Spike for $130, marked him down to $99. Mrs. Claus told Santa if Walmart went down to $70 (almost half) then we would get it and put it away for X-mas 2009. Spike sat at the $99 price for a loooong time and they weren't moving. Around the end of January/early Feb. DH and DD11 ran to Walmart to pick something up and DH decided to see what was on the clearance aisle. They had 2 Spikes left, the price had dropped down to $59.99...Dh called me and said should I get it? YES!!!

Santa has left Spike in our closet since then and DS plays with the ones at the store whenever we see him, so I know he'll love it when Santa brings it this year. I know this year Spike is red, and last years model is green. DS won't care what color he is, just as long as he is under the tree this year.

Moral of the story...if you are debating and you don't 'need' it today, then you might want to wait until after X-mas and see if you can get it cheaper.

My DD -3 and DD -2 have Spike. They love him! My 7 year old nephew also loves him. I do believe though that my husband is the biggest fan of Spike. He believes it's one of the best remote control toys ever. We live in a condo and he and the girls take Spike on regular walks all the way down the hall.

We have spike too and love him, though he doesn't get played with a ton (do any toys ever really get played with a lot??) DS had just turned 3 when he got him last Xmas and yes, daddy tended to play with it more then. Now, DS enjoys chasing his baby sister with Spike LOL I like the PP suggestion on how to get him for a reduced price b/c he really was a lot of $$ for how little he's played with. BUT that's not your question :-)

I think he is age appropriate for a 7 year old ... yes, the remote is very simplified, but I don't think it will seem babyish for your DS. What's neat is that is has this "random" button that you press to make Spike do random things and he does something different depending on what position he's in, so he has lots of little surprises that he does!

My parents got him for the kids last year for Christmas and they played with it for about a week and now we are lucky if it gets touched once a month. All I know is that I'm so glad we didn't waste our money on it for them! LOL....I've actually considered selling it on Ebay but thought maybe I should wait at least another year for my parents sake although they aren't here much and I don't think they'd really notice.
