Ok a question about Universal tickets. Please help!!

Ok, so I am torn. I have not purchased my Universal tickets yet. As, I see you can just print them out online. I am wondering what I should do. I arrive the 18th, at 12:30. So, I was thinking by the time. I get my luggage, and check in to my hotel. It will be around 2. I was going to try and go to universal, that day until closing.Which would give me approxiametly 4 hours of touring. The next morning. I leave the husband in hollywood. He will be stationed in hollywood, for a convention. And, I go off to Disney for 2 days, when I come back I was thinking that same day. I will go to Universal, thinking to get back around 10 a.m. My question is do they have tickets at the gate, for late arrival guests?Like a discounted pass for after 3 p.m.? Or do you think I should get the front of the line pass online. I wanted to buy the free shuttle ticket, but i cant upgrade that to a fotl pass. What should I do? What would you do? TIA !!

Right now, Universal Studios Hollywood has a 2-1 ticket you can purchase online. It is $61 for 2 days.
